Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about we need to know when enough is enough. Trying to go after more and more things can be exhausting and it can just take a lot of time. Right now, I traveling through Latin America with just two suitcases and a backpack, and I overpacked. I brought some dress pants, dress shirts, and two suits with my dress shoes and I definitely didn’t wear them once while I was traveling. When I go back to the states and see my parents, I’m going to put them in storage.
I used to think that I needed a suit and a fancy office to run my business, and that was very expensive. Now my expenses are reduced from $3500 a month to $650 a month because my business is all online. One of the techniques that businesses use to keep their employees in check is to raise their expectations. Instead of drinking a PBR, now your hooked on drinking vintage wine or whiskey.
It’s fine to want fancier things, but make sure it’s not the expense of your soul. People will buy a house, and then want to get a bigger house because now there is too much stuff to store in the house. This is when it’s a problem because most people have to trade in their time for money to get that stuff. And obliviously if someone is making a million dollars, they can either be a good saver or they can be great spenders. It all depends on how much is enough for a person.
This can also apply to titles and awards in someone’s career or it can apply to do the person who just wants to date and not settle down. When enough is too little, then that is when destructive behavior starts to creep in. Look at people like Alexander the Great who died in his 20s because he wanted to take over the globe and having what he had was not enough. It’s all relative though and depends on the situation. The wanting for more can be for good reasons or for bad reasons, and the key to life is to focus on good reasons.
There have been plenty of people in history that failed miserably and had their name tarnished because enough wasn’t enough. Ambition is good, but it has to be focused on the right things. When we just focus on getting more and more things, then we’re just focusing on ourselves and not what our actions are doing to others. We are global citizens on this planet and we get a lot of good things from other people, so it is necessary that we make sure that we’re not being selfish or greedy with our need for more. This is when it’s a problem. If you’re like Jamie Foxx and have a huge mansion so that your family and friends can stay over, so that you can work on your dreams together, then that’s fine in my book. Ed Sheeran used to sleep on Jaime’s couch while he worked on his music in the beginning.
To know when is enough and don’t go for more than necessary, and this should help lead someone to a good life.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, nothing is enough for the man whom enough is too little. Like the AT&T commercial, where the spokesperson asks the little kids what they want, and the little girl said more, we want more. That’s fine to want a faster phone with more features on a fast network, but there is a cost associated with those things. Just make sure that cost is worth it. If I was making $200,000 a year but working 90 hour weeks to get this salary, it would be too much for me to handle. It would be better to make $100,000 on 45 hours so that I would have more time to do other things. Life is about choices, so let’s make sure we make the right decisions with our wants and needs. This way we can live happier lives with fewer regrets.
