Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista, where my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about value. There is a quote that says price is what people pay, and value is what somebody gets. For every person, value is different. I might value something more than somebody else and I will pay for that thing in terms of time and money.
For me, I value convenience and freedom. I know that time is short and every day that passes that I waste is a day that I will never get back again. So I’m going to pay for something that I deem will waste my time. I will never buy a timeshare because I don’t want to be stuck going to the same locations over and over again and I don’t want to waste the rent out my timeshare just so I can break even on it. For me, and a lot of other people, it’s just a waste of time and money that I will never recoup back.
Since we have such little time on this planet, we should focus on the things that will give us the most value in life. We should be able to enjoy life to the best of our ability. Life is too short to be miserable for longer than you have to. I’m not saying that you should live a life where you only seek pleasure and avoid the things that cause pain. Because sometimes you need to go through some pain in order to get big value down the road.
Working on your education can be a pain, but the return on that time spent can give you a lot of value in the future. As my time in the Marines, it was very painful at times, but it has provided me a lot of value in the future. Going through boot camp sucked for me. I got pneumonia, where I lost like 30 lbs in two weeks and was always coughing up a storm. I don’t know how I made it through boot camp but I did. Then I learned a lot of leadership skills and got my education paid for. Now I have more options as a person.
To understand value, you have to understand your options in life. If I didn’t go into the Marines, then I would have to either find a job or go to school and pay out of pocket. Those two option didn’t seem like they would propel my life forward like I wanted it to go and so I decided the military was the path for me.
I choose to start my business because I value flexibility and control over my day than if I would have worked for somebody else. I know that I’m much happier as a person now than if I would have chosen a different path. Figure out what is going to give you the most value out of life, and you’ll never be happier. This comes to your hobbies, your work, your finances, and your relationships. You might have to sacrifice one or more of those things in order to grow, but you have to just figure things out for yourself by experimenting and knowing what you want out of your future.
Right now, I’mi trying to grow this grow with Joe business and get more coaching clients. It’s a process and it takes a lot of work, but I know that if I continue down this path, it will give me all the value I am craving. I’m not satisfied with where I am right now but I know it’s much better than working a 9-5 with people I don’t like, in a job that is not very inspiring, and not focusing on my craft. It’s just not a very fulfilling life.
Some people say that the most valuable place on this planet is a cemetery because there you will find ideas that never saw the light of day, dreams never pursued, and just wasted potential. These people didn’t pursue value out of their life, they just choose the path was given to them and it shows.
So do stuff that will generate the most value for yourself in the future. If it means developing your kids to be the best version of themselves and you get a lot of value out of that, then pursue it. You have to realize that you don’t have to give your children the best of everything to succeed in life. You just have to give them the best tools to succeed and a lot of those are just lessons that they can use in the future. I feel like I get my work ethic from my dad, who is an immigrant from Mexican and I get my good values from my mom and dad. These things that that taught me are way more valuable than any materialistic thing that they could have bought me.
If you waste away your day watching television all day, then how much do you value your time? Do you not believe that you can accomplish more out of life? Do you not think you can find a mate that will satisfy you? Do you think you’re not valuable enough to get paid more as an individual? Do you think you’re stuck in your current position in life? I guess in order to seek more value as a person, you have to believe that you’re valuable as a person. I know that my potential in life is huge and that whatever I set my eyes on I go after it. I value my life and I don’t want to be wasteful of it.
There are four things we can value as a person, money or materialistic things, mating or relationships, mastery or status, and movement or freedom. You decide as a person, which one of those things are the most important to you and your actions will determine which one you will choose. Just make sure you’re not lying to yourself and which one you want. Don’t chase one thing and sacrifice the thing you really want out of life or else you can regret it for the rest of your life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, when you’re back decisions in life, don’t make a decision based on what’s bad or good, make a decision that is going to give you the most value out of life. You have to decide what is valuable to you and you have to make sure that you don’t get distracted by the non-valuable stuff that is shiny and distracting and you should live a pretty good life.
