Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how today’s society is influenced by the last generation’s social norms. The world is constantly changing and what was normal two hundred years ago, may or may not be okay to do today.

Plus they didn’t have access to social media, access to the type of research we have today, and a bunch of other things. I feel that a lot of people born today, born in the same situation two hundred years ago would be racist or more biased to their own kind because that is just how it is.

Tens of thousands of years ago, we lived in tribes and we were worried about other people from different tribes. This is a natural tendency because our brain hasn’t really evolved to keep up with societal changes. If you look at our society, we like to root against other people. Dems vs Republicans, Blazers vs. the Lakers for in my case, iPhone against Android, and so many others.

So when you see another race 200 years ago, this tribal feeling can come over. Is it a rational feeling to have, no but when for tens of thousands of generations villages were raided by foreign tribes, your body still wants to put up these guards against people outside your tribe.

When I was in the Marines, we would argue about which state was the best, but when we were faced with another service member from another branch, we would tend to stick with the Marines. When it’s service members against a foreign enemy, we band together. And I bet if aliens were attacking earth, we would band together as a world against them.
So these tendencies back in the day started creating social norms that affect people today. The segregation of black and brown people from white neighborhoods. Did people value religion like they do in the south? I grew up in Oregon and religion was not a big thing. I’m not sure why but it wasn’t a big deal. So my thoughts are influenced by other things than religion. Is this a bad or a good thing? Well, it all depends on how you use it. Is it for good or are you using it as a shield to do bad?

To create the best society, I feel we need to ask more questions and network with more people outside of our tribe. For my financial planning business, I tend to focus on Latinos but I’ll take anyone if they are coachable and I also make sure to go to events where I can mix with other people. This way I can show other people than Latinos can be a resource and so I can learn from these other people.

No ethnic group has all the answers, and it’s going to take work to get pass these social injustices that we see and to build trust. If we can do this though, the world is going to be a much better place.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, today’s society is influenced by the last generations social norms. If someone says something offensive, try to see why they think that way. Was it the way they were raised or did they have an experience that caused them to think that way? It’s best to seek to understand first than to be understood. This can be hard at times because you feel that there is something wrong but if you actually want to fix the situation, then this is the best path in my belief. My mom once said something that was offensive, and she is one of the nicest people in the world, but she grew up in a different time and I told her that was not a good thing to say in these times and this was like ten years ago. And she learned. So don’t be a jerk too and you this by using more honey than vinegar. But like always, this depends on the situation.

  • The Tim Ferriss Life Hack I use To Stay Slim

In this episode, we discuss the body hack techniques I use to help me stay slim that I learned from Tim Ferriss.

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the Tim Ferriss life hack I use to stay slim. Now before you take this advice, do you research or consult a professional to see what works best for you but now the disclaimer is out of the way, the life hack is really simple. Before every meal that you eat, you just do 50 wall push-ups and 50 air squats.

Now, this is the 100 percent solution but it can be the 5 to 10 percent solution that you need. The reason why you do these exercises before you eat is that you want your muscles to start using up energy. Think of your muscles as storage tanks for energy. When you have to move, your muscles need to work and need the energy to do so.

So if you have depleted storage tanks, more of the food you eat will go into muscles instead of to your liver to be converted into fat. This is the system we’ve used for thousands of years to survive famines. When your muscles can’t store anymore, it’s a signal by your pancreas to start producing insulin. This insulin acts as the lid to stop the muscles from taking in more energy.

So if you want to store more energy in your muscles, get bigger muscles. And if you do 50 lunges and 50 wall push-ups three times a day for a month, your muscles will most likely be able to store more fuel because you’ve trained your body to operate at this level. The body adapts to its environment and will typically use the energy that is required and store the rest or get rid of it.

This is why when you stop working out, your muscles get smaller, it requires too much energy to keep large muscles for most people and the body will start breaking down what it doesn’t use.

If I’m in a restaurant or someplace outside of my home, I just go into the bathroom and do the exercises in there. And my apartment, I have a TRX so that I just do the exercises on that. And with the TRX I can mix up the exercises as well. I can do rows for my back, various lunges for my hamstrings and glutes, I can do bicep curls, tricep extensions. I try to cycle through the exercise so that I keep balance in my body. I love the TRX because all you need is a door and your body weight and you can work every part of your body and make exercises really hard based on your body position.

One thing I like being in Latin America is that the portion size is a lot smaller. It is ridiculous that they give us so much food but in the book, Fast Food Nation, the reason we have larger sizes is that one movie theater was looking for a way to increase concession sales. They tried two for one deal and other tactics, but what worked is that they just started making the sizes bigger. Since they were bigger, they could charge more. A small popcorn back in the day is like a quarter of the size than what it is today and the same with soft drinks and not restaurant plates.

Here in Colombia, the servings are a lot smaller and I prefer that. So I don’t have to worry about overeating as much. So a tip in America is to order your food and ask for half of it to be put in a to-go bag. Here is another trick. Now, these tips are not one thing that is going to make everything else in your life easier. You need a portfolio of skills and tricks in order to survive in the society that we have today. It’s way too complex to only have one tool in your toolbox. So use these tools and continue to see what you need to add and remove in your toolbox in order to be a success.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, the Tim Ferriss life hack I use to stay slim is just to do 50 wall push-ups and 50 air squats. This way your muscles store more of the blood glucose instead of your liver. And your liver will convert that blood glucose into fat. This is the system that we have and I think it is important that we understand how the system works. This way we can make sure the system works for us. I know that I want to be healthy in the future and having the least amount of extra body fat will help out my back out a lot. I’m in my 30s now and I know I have to stay healthy if I want to accomplish all things I have in front of me. So I will do the tricks necessary to give me my good life.

  • If You’re About Pleasing Everyone, You’re Going To Struggle Endlessly

In this episode, we discuss how we need to let people down from time to time to live our best lives.

    Full Transcript

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how if you’re about pleasing everyone, you’re going to struggle endlessly. This is a very valuable lesson that I learned and you’re going to make people upset, but that’s more of their problem than it is yours.

If I focused on pleasing everyone, I would not be where I am right now. I love my life and it required taking risks and letting other people down with their expectations. I remember when I went to go see a Marine Corps recruiter and he convinced me to join, I had to tell my parents. My dad was on board and like this is what you have to do, then do it. My mom started crying. This was 2004 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were going on. She was just worried about my safety but she is proud now. I also had a friend whose mother was against me joining. I had to let her down to.

I needed to go to the Marines in order to make my life better. I was able to get a paycheck that was way more than job at a grocery store. I also had to grow up and the separation from my family allowed me to do that. I also met a lot of great folks and learned a lot of great lessons with my seven years in the Marines.

And since I’ve gotten out the Marines, there have been times where I had to let people down by choosing myself over their expectations. You have to remember that the real ones will forgive you and the fake one will hold a grudge. Now you know who to keep in your life and who you should disregard.

I feel the only way to happiness is to be true to yourself and if you do this, then you’re going to upset some people. This is going to require you to be emotionally strong and be okay with being alone at times. This is also why it’s good to build up your network so that you can reach out to other folks and you’re not solely focusing on this one person.

This is where a scarcity mind can hold you back and you’re just constantly worrying about losing that person in your life so you’re going to do things that go against your values, principles, and beliefs and then you end up struggling.

I’m an ambitious person and I don’t want to stop growing because I want to reach the outer limits of my human potential. I don’t want to be placed in a box, because if this happens then I can’t grow. And when you live in a box of someone else’s expectations, then you can’t grow to your full potential.
Plus it’s just exhausting to please everyone. You’ll have no time for yourself and you want to be able to indulge in self-care. Then if this happens for too long, then serious problems can develop in the future. When I was working at my last firm and sold life insurance, I would run quotes for people in their 50s and a majority of them had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I feel that they were too worried about pleasing other people and the thing they had to give up was their health.

I’m 34 now but I was experiencing those lessons at 30. It really opened up my eyes on what type of future I could have for myself. Now, I make decisions based on my values, principles, and beliefs, because this will allow me to make the greatest good in the world and live my best life. If you want the same joy as me, I would suggest that you stop trying to focus on making other people happy to give yourself happiness.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it if you’re about pleasing everyone, you’re going to struggle endlessly. This will be a bottomless pit that can never be filled. You can work really hard on trying to achieve this one thing, like a job promotion or a reward, and then the joy from that event wears off and things are back to normal. Now you might be thinking, why did I do all this work because I don’t even enjoy where I am at right now. So just focus on challenging yourself and pursuing your true desires, but also make sure you’re being a good person along the way. If you follow this path, then you can have true joy that is not dependent on someone else, and that’s more controllable.

  • Learn To Separate The Wheat From The Chaff

In this episode, we discuss how need to be disciplined with our day by focusing on the important stuff and removing the unimportant stuff.

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we need to learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff. And I feel the institution that prevents this separation of chaff and wheat is our education system.

I’ll start with school though. I hate the way our education system trains us. They just throw a bunch of facts at us and expect us to remember them. I used to follow this model until I started reading books and realizing that I learned a bunch of useless stuff for an exam that I later forgot. I follow the philosophy that good stuff sticks. Now in my MBA, I don’t study, I just go to class and do the homework, and if something sticks out to me, then I put it in my Evernote as something that I should follow-up in the future. I don’t know when in the future, but I know if a situation comes up, then I can go to the place where I can find the information because where to find it.

And if you want to be even faster in your implementation, don’t ask yourself how you can do something, find who can do it. I’m trying to be a generalist and hire a specialist to do the in the weeds stuff. I want to know how the systems work with each other. So I don’t spend that much time studying and I don’t care what grade I get in class. It won’t matter in the future. And this is learning how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

If obtaining more information was required for success, then we would all be billionaires and have six-pack abs. I remember at my last firm, two of my co-workers were discussing how one of their sons wasn’t studying for their exam to memorize all the states and their capitals. I remember saying that seems ridiculous with Google in your pocket, but they just dismissed me saying that’s what he needs to do to be successful in class.

After I heard that, I knew there was no point in arguing with them. I get it, they want to make sure that their kids are successful, and an easy way to do that is just to play the game. But after reading a lot, and starting my own business, you don’t need a lot of that stuff to be successful. And I also read in a book, that when you rely solely on the system, there might come a day where the system doesn’t need you.

And this is what today’s lesson is about, separate what is not important, and keep what is important. To consume wheat, you have to remove the chaff. If you try to eat chaff, it is indigestible. It’s worthless to you, but to farm animals it’s important. A majority of what I learned in school is chaff, and that chaff is important to the education system. That’s how colleges charge so much money and then people end up with over $100k in student loan debt and then end up taking a job that they hate because they have to pay back their student loans.

I’ve taken courses from business owners, and some of their courses that cost me $50 bucks were way more valuable than the $4500 my GI Bill covers. If I had to pay my MBA tuition, I wouldn’t go, and would just read books and hire experts to help me out. My MBA is not worth getting a $100k in debt. But I do have my GI Bill to pay for everything and gives me $900 a month tax-free. That goes pretty far here in Colombia.

To separate the chaff from the wheat, you need to have wisdom. And this is why I like following business owners and reading their books. I recently just finished reading John D. Rockefeller’s biography and he learned a lot about his business on his own by getting a self-education. He didn’t rely on a system to tell him how to create an empire. Now John D. Rockefeller did a lot of shady business practices to limit competition, but you can still learn a lot from him on seeing what is valuable to do and what isn’t. And you learn how to do this well, you’re going to have a lot more control over your life and deal with a lot less nonsense.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, we have to learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff. We have to know what is valuable and not valuable to us. And is valuable to me, might not be valuable to you and vice versa. There is a negotiation story where a baker and a bartender are fighting over the last orange. Then after a while of fighting, they start asking questions, and it turns out that the baker just wants the skin for the zest and the bartender wants the orange for the juice. So they end up sharing the orange and everyone gets what they want. This is the same thing you have to do with your life if you want to have less frustration and more joy in your life. So ask questions and then from there, figure out what is valuable and what isn’t valuable.

In this episode, we discuss how you shouldn’t focus on building a legacy or trying to get other people’s approval because in the future, not many people remember anyways. And how it’s more important to focus on being a good person and doing important things.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how in 100 years from now, who will remember you? And the answer is probably no one. You could build the biggest building and how your name on it, but no one is going to know who you are. If you look at buildings like Rockafeller Plaza and campuses like Standford, most people don’t know the people behind those buildings.

Ask a kid today and they probably won’t know who Gerald Ford and Warren G. Harding were, who were US Presidents. They might know the name but they won’t know who these people really were. They won’t know their lessons, how they were as people, and how they treated people.
I’m sharing this with you so that you know that even if you become president of the United States, people won’t know who you are. I bet a lot of folks don’t even know who were presidents in other countries. I certainly don’t, I’m not going to research them because they are not important to me. And this is the point, people are focused on themselves and their friends and families. They don’t have all the time in the world to know trivia facts on who the 10th president of the United States was. And I don’t know this answer, and I don’t learn it because it’s not going to help make better decisions with my life. I might here this in a trivia contest, but I’ll gladly lose that trivia match because who wants a $10 gift card when I can use real wisdom to make a million dollars.

I’m not going to focus too much on stuff that is not important and chasing reward can do that. You can be the best salesman in your company, or you can make a difference in your community, but it’s not the status you should be chasing, it’s the satisfaction that you’re doing important things and not focusing on being an important person. It won’t make you happy if you chase things, because there will always be something to chase.

This is why I’m focused on doing important things because I know true happiness for me is challenging myself and doing things that will give me true satisfaction. Almost every morning, I read for 45 minutes while I drink my morning cup of coffee. Then I go for an hour walk where I either eat breakfast tacos or chocolate chip pancakes as a break. Sometimes with a passion fruit smoothie. Then I come home, write a podcast episode, and in my journal. Then I get to work. Then I take another walking break at some point. And when I walk, I listen to a podcast so I can learn 80% of the time. 20% of the time its music. Then get back to work until it’s time to eat dinner. Then I either work some more or I watch something on Youtube or Netflix. Right now I’ve been into these sports medical videos that explain how basketball players like Brandon Roy hurt themselves. And I’m watching Atlanta now. Then I go to bed and start the process over.
This routine gives me so much satisfaction because I’m living life on my terms and I feel like I’m doing work that makes a difference. I don’t care who remembers me 100 years from now, I’m just trying to do important things to do.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, in 100 years from now, who will remember you? The answer is probably none or very few people. And those few people won’t be impressed by your name on the building. They can be impressed by your ideas but don’t focus on trying to impress these people. Just focus on doing important things. That might be with your health, your family, your spirit, your friends, or your career. And you should treat these five things as balls you have to juggle and four of them are made out of glass and one is rubber. And the rubber ball is work. You can drop it and it can bounce back. If you drop one of the other balls, then they will break. So focus on the important things in life and your life should be more fulfilling.

At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how readers are leaders. If you look at my Goodreads or Instagram, you know that I love to read books. The reason I love to read books because it helps me make better decisions with my life. When I read a book like The Pursuit of Happyness, it allows me to get in the mind of Chris Gardner, and see how he made decisions.
Now if you don’t know who Chris Gardner is, they made a movie about him called the Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith. I love this movie but the book is so much better. You get to hear about his back story and what he was feeling during his journey to becoming a successful financial advisor.
He grew up in Milwaukee and didn’t know his father because his mom went down to New Orleans to party and got pregnant. She moves back to Milwaukee and gets into a bad relationship, where the boyfriend would beat Chris, the mom, and his sisters. Then he was sexually assaulted in High School. Went into the Navy, though he wanted to become a doctor, then decided he wanted to become a financial advisor while making little money and trying to raise his son.
He wanted to protect his son at all costs because he didn’t want his son to grow up without his father and he fought for his son, while the mother was not around. Now I’m going through my own journey trying to make it as a financial advisor, and I’m glad I don’t have it as bad as Chris, but when things do go wrong, I can be reminded, that if Chris can make it, then I can too. We’re pretty much the same and in the book, he laid out his blueprint to becoming successful, which was to work really hard. He would keep notes on his clients and make 200 phone calls a day for two years.
Out of the 225 books, I’ve read so far, I have lots of lessons that I can draw on and is the fuel for making this podcast. I heard that readers are leaders, and I entirely agree with this quote. I know how to make better decisions with my life and I know how to better interact with people. If I was to learn all these lessons by myself, I would still be stuck in 2004, which is the year I graduated high school.
Education is not about knowing facts to win a trivia match or to show how smart you are, the point of an education is to learn how to make better decisions today and in the future. This is why I spend so much time reading and listening to podcasts so I can make better decisions for myself and my team. Then I can lead them in the right direction with fewer mistakes. And if I make a mistake, I know to overcome that mistake because I’ve read books to help me out in this area.
This a what a leader does, they lead their team to success, but if you don’t know how to do that, then you’re going to fail as a leader, and then you might not be a leader anymore. If you want to have more control over your life, then you have to be a leader instead of a follower. Now we don’t have to lead everyone, we just need to figure how much we want in our life. But you’re going to be a leader in one way or another, you can be a leader as a partner in a relationship, your family, at work, your community, or nation. You decide what’s enough, but if you want to make your situation a great one, spend some time reading so you know how to make better decisions as a leader.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, readers are leaders. So dedicate time every day to read or listen to an audiobook. Then I recommend that you take a lesson that source and put it in a journal. This way you write it down and it’s more likely to stick. Then if you need to make a decision and you feel stuck, then you can review your notes to see if you have something there. If you don’t, then go find a source to help you out in the situation. As a leader, you pretty much responsible for solving problems, and it’s much easier to do if you know what to do. If I was to ask my 18-year-old self to do what I am doing today at 34, he would fail miserably, but for the past 16 years, I’ve dedicated my life to learning and it’s much cheaper and I think more valuable than sitting in a class. So if you want to have more control over your situation and lead yourself to a better outcome, start reading.
So in your journal, ask yourself, am I reading enough? am I listening to enough podcasts? Are the stuff that I’m consuming giving me the ability to make better decisions, or is it just entertaining myself? What is the most valuable lesson that you learned in the past month? Are you able to make good decisions at work and in life? Just see where you and where you want to go in life and ask yourself if you have the knowledge to get where you want to go. If not, then start finding some materials to help you out.

  • Be Ten Times Better

In this episode, we discuss the need to be ten better than your competition and your old self if you want to be successful in this new economy.

    Full Transcript

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the need to be ten times better. There is a good business book out there called zero to one, and it’s about innovation and competition. And one of the best ways to get what you want out of life is to be ten times better than your environment and your old self. In the book, they talk about how you don’t want to be in a competition, you want to have a monopoly and a way to have a monopoly over your niche is to be ten times better.
If you look at cell phones before the iPhone, they were ten times worst than the iPhone. When the iPhone was introduced, I pretty quickly switched from my blackberry at T-mobile to AT&T so I could get my hands on the iPhone. This was great for me and I truly enjoyed the switch. I was able to do a lot more with my phone and it just felt good in my hand. Most people don’t make a switch to something else if it’s only marginally better. A lot of people buy a Tesla car because it’s ten times better than all the other electric cars.
The same concept can be applied to us. I heard that an A player is worth 36 times more than a B player. An A player can do the work of 12 people or it could take them a day to do something while it takes another team two years to do the same work. To be an A player, you need to be ten times better than the other players. You also have to remember that we don’t play in a finite game where there only so many resources to go around, we can grow the pie to get larger, but we need to make sure that we’re developing ourselves so that we have more control over our lives.
If you look at people and companies that are ten times better than their environment, they have a lot of control over their lives in the way they design their lives. I love the life I’m living right now and it’s because I’m way more than 10 times better than my old self. I love being a digital nomad that runs my own virtual financial planning business. I’m able to manage my life and all the things in it because I’m physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually strong enough to make it work for myself. If you get one percent better in each of these four cornerstones over a one year period, you will become over 3700% better as a person, which means that you’re 37 times better at the end of the year than how you started it.
If I was to think about how I started off as an 18-year-old and compared myself to today, I’m glad I put so much work into my self-development. I’m basically a billion times better today than how I was an 18 year. I’m better able to communicate my ideas, I don’t sweat the small stuff, I get less distracted, I’m able to make better decisions, and I have a lot less anxiety. This takes time and persistence can solve a lot of problems and create a lot of opportunities. So if you want more out of life, then you simply just need to be better as a person but you don’t want to be marginally better, you want to be a least ten times better. The world is also constantly changing so this benchmark is going to change. What was ten times better 20 years ago, is probably ten times worst today. And if this is the case, then you probably don’t have the career you want, the relationships you desire, and the personal finances to make you feel secure.
I see how the world is changing and I realize the skills that I have today won’t be enough tomorrow. I have to constantly put in the time to work on myself. If I just read, write in my journal, and make sure I work on things that are the most valuable to me, then I’m going to be fine. I know most people don’t do this, and this is one of the reasons I started Grow With Joe, so I can give people the tools to help themselves grow and be ten times better. If we all were ten times better physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, then I think the world would be a better place. I think it’s our duty to make the world a better place and a good way to do that is work on yourself and then make your slice of the world better.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, strive to be ten times better as a person. I think a good benchmark is just to look at yourself a year ago. Are you stronger physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually than you were a year ago? If the answer is yes, then keep doing what you’re doing. If the answer is no, then change something in your life. Plus no one wants to really deal with B, C, and D players. People want to feel secure that they are being taken care of. An A player will do this. When I was in the Marines, if I had an A player, I could just give them a task and they would get the job done. B and C players needed nudges to get the stuff done. Then this takes away from my job, and I can’t finish what I need to finish. Yes, you want to be helpful, but if someone is not putting in the effort to develop themselves, then maybe they just need to find a different place to thrive. We can’t be the best in every single area, so find where you need to be and then strive to be ten better in that area.
So in your journal, ask yourself, are in the right area to be ten times better? Are you the A Player in your group? Do you want to be the A player? Are you okay with what a B or C player gets? Are your ideas or plans, only marginally better? As always, this lesson requires wisdom to know where and when to be ten times better. So take in this lesson find the niche that you need to thrive in and then after a while, the riches will start coming in.

  • The Power Of Positive Thinking

In this episode, we discuss how to use positive thinking to help you out during your day and what are some pitfalls that can happen if you’re too positive.

You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the power of positive thinking. I like to think of myself as positive but realistic. If someone wants to do something, I don’t want to put them down but I also want to make sure that they have a plan. If a financial planning client came to me and said they want to quit their job to start a business, I would just say congrats, and do you need anything from me and have you thought about this and this.
In life, you need to take calculated risks and positive think will help you see opportunities and go after them. If I was to be negative, I would not have the last five years in this business. I would have been like, what’s the use and then found something with more security but less fulfilling and control over my situation.
You can be irrational with you positive thinking if you’re ignoring the danger signs but what I like about positive thinking is that you see opportunities because you’re keeping an open mind. There is a famous book out there called the secret and I haven’t read it or watched the documentary on Netflix, but it’s about putting what you want out in the world, and then the world will give you what you want.
I don’t think it’s as easy as that for most people but it can be as easy as that for some people. But what I think about it is now that you put what you want out in the world, now you’re scanning your environment for something that will help you get you what you want. It’s kind of like buying or wanting a car like an Audi, then all of a sudden, you start seeing a lot of Audis on the road.
Most likely it’s not because more people are buying Audis, it’s because you’re just more aware of them now. So when you’re positive with your thinking, you’re looking for silver linings, lessons to get better, and opportunities to get better.
Plus positive thinking can get you past those difficult moments in life. I know when I’m having a difficult time, I just like to tell myself, no matter how hard it is, or how hard it will be, I will get through it. Of course, sometimes you need to pivot on your plans because things have changed, but most of the time you just need to keep going and positive thinking will help out a lot more than negative thinking.
Negative thinking can be useful but you have to know when it is useful. But most of the time you should be positive with your thinking, more people are going to want to be around and it’s just more helpful in more scenarios. Plus it gives you hope to do better and be better as a person. If everyone decided to do nothing but negative thinking, then we wouldn’t progress as a society. It’s a balance though because some ideas just need to end.
So to help you stay positive, I would focus more on gratitude. When you show gratitude towards the things in your life, you can see more of the world’s beauty. Like this morning, I went for a walk and was grateful for the view I saw this morning. I was surrounded by trees and plants and clean air. Now I want to do great things so that I can see more of the beauty in the world. If I said that outside sucks and I’m just going to stay inside, I’m limiting my experiences and my opportunities in the world.
So in my journal every day, I write three things I’m grateful for so I don’t forget to be positive and also realize that if there are negative things in my day, I still have positive things in my life to have a great life. Then this gives me the motivation to work on my goals and live my best life possible. I’ve been doing this for the past eight years and life has never been better.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, indulge in the power of positive thinking. It will set you up for more success and opportunities in your life. You don’t want to be irrational with your positive thinking either, so make sure that you’re moving in the right direction for yourself and positive thinking can help move in that direction when you face bumps in the road. Most of the time you want a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset because reality is negotiable and you can get the life you want if you do the right things and have the right attitude.
So in your journal, ask yourself, do you participate enough in positive thinking? Do you participate in too much positive thinking where you’re not addressing issues? How can you show more gratitude in your life so you can be in the habit of positive thinking? Are you too negative in some scenarios? Are not negative enough? This is a balance and I feel like you need both to live a great life. So look at your life and see what needs to change so you can live the life that you want to live.

  • The Best Way To Eat An Elephant

In this episode, we discuss the best strategies to tackle big tasks.

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the best way to eat an elephant. And the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. The quote is about doing things in chunks and how we shouldn’t focus on the entire problem. Just start on one area and start getting to work.
One of the worst things I hate in life is packing, but I just tell myself that I’m going to start in this area, and just focus on this area until it is complete. Then I’ll move on to something else. That’s how I accomplished my last couple of moves and this is the same strategy I use in other parts of my life.
Just focus on the smallest piece that I can accomplish, then work on that piece until it’s done. Then you just move to the next thing. You don’t need to eat an elephant in one day, it can take you a week, a month, a year, or a decade to finish eating your elephant but you just need to get started.
Then I find that once you start getting momentum, then eating the next piece gets a little bit easier. It’s like the quote, you don’t have to be great to get started, you just have to get start to be great. But also realize that some elephants require you to start as early as possible. If I was to wait until the day before moving day to start packing, I’m going to fail. There is not enough time in the day to get everything done, because when we fail to plan, we plan to fail.
I know that I don’t want to be a failure, so this is why I plan out my future. I pretty much know what I want to accomplish over the next five years and what I need to do. It’s going to be a lot of work trying to build up my own financial planning firm, but I’m just going to take it one day at a time, and do what I can. Sometimes that requires me to rest but most of the time it requires me to get to work on the things that will get me the future that I desire.
So I’m just going to start working on eating my elephant, and this is all I can do. Or this is all I want to do because I know once I eat my elephant, then I’m going to have the life that I desire and I’m going to make the change in the world that I desire as well. This is going to require me to live a few years of my life like most people won’t, so eventually, I can live the rest of my life like most people can’t.
Has my journey been difficult, yeah, but I can’t see myself doing anything else in life and I feel that when I accomplish tough things, then it gives me a lot of joy and satisfaction? When I was in Marines and going through boot camp, if you just focused on the entire three months, then you would go crazy, but the way a lot of Marines did their times, was just go from chow to chow. I would wake up, get ready in the morning while being yelled at, then we would head to the chow hall, and then we would train and just think about making it to lunch, then after lunch, just thought about making it to dinner. Then all of sudden your three months was up and then you’re a Marine.
I tell everyone, you can be a Marine, you just have to say yes to getting on the plane and the drill instructors will take care of the rest. They will ensure that you eat your elephant one bite at a time. It won’t always be joyful, but you will accomplish something amazing and will be a better person for it. I believe life is about challenging yourself to do a little bit better every day, and if you do this for long enough, you’re going to be unstoppable and accomplish any task that comes your way. Then live your best life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So if you have a big goal or task that you want to accomplish, just focus on the smallest thing that needs to be accomplished, and then do that, then once that is done, then move onto the next thing. But also you have plenty of time ahead of you so you finish your task on time. If moving is going to take 40 hours, just make sure you spend 3 hours a day for 14 days packing, and you will be done. Or find a friend to help split up your time. I believe that there is nothing in life that can’t change with enough persistence, so understand why you’re eating this elephant and that should help you keep going.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is a big task that you have in front of you? What is the first thing that you should do to get started? Is the thing you’re working on the most important thing to do? Have you tried creating a Gantt Chart to help with your progress? If you don’t know what a Gantt chart is, I highly recommend that you look it up. It will definitely help you with accomplishing your goals. Also, ask yourself, is there anything that I’m confused about doing or scared of doing to help me reach my goals? What is causing you to feel this way? Sometimes our own self-limiting beliefs hold us back from trying to eat the elephant, so just explore your thoughts and feelings as well.

  • You Get What You Tolerate

In this episode, we discuss how if you want to have a better life, start tolerating the things that will get you a better life.

    Full Transcript

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we get what we tolerate. This applies to your health, your relationships, your career, pretty much everything. If you can tolerate going to the gym and striving to eat well and get a good night’s sleep, then you’re going to receive the benefits of those activities.
For myself, I love to read, and I’m willing to tolerate this activity so I gain all the wisdom. If you’re not going to tolerate certain conversations, then you’re not going those conversations in your life. I think as people, we have to decide how much of something we’re going to take.
If you tolerate going to a job that you hate going to, that is what you’re going to get. If you can tolerate a relationship that isn’t filling up your cup, then that is what you’re going to get. The world is not a mind reader and it’s going to try to give you what it’s offering but for the most part, that means following someone else’s dream.
In life, you have to know who you want to be in life and be the person that you want to be in life. And to help you understand the type of person you need to be and then actually be that person, you have to tolerate doing growth activities and be comfortable with uncertainty and losses.
I’m not going to tolerate going back to a regular 9-5 job. If I tolerate that job, then I’m going to a stable paycheck as long as the company does well and I’ll get benefits but what I’ll be missing out on is creating my own thing and being the person I want to be. I don’t want to work for someone else, so I have to tolerate being a business owner.
I have to tolerate the uncertainty of not getting a client for the day, I have to deal with the uncertainty of figuring out stuff as they come up, and a bunch of other stuff, but the reward for tolerating this stuff for me is control and autonomy over my life. This is what I want so I’m going to tolerate the entrepreneur lifestyle.
Same thing with your relationships with friends, co-workers, acquaintances, family, and significant other. What you tolerate from these people, is what you’re going to get. So either you can take them as they are or you can try to raise their standards by setting a good example for yourself.
To set your own standard, you’re going to need courage. It can be hard to stand up for yourself but the more you do it, the easier it’s going to be. Just remember that a missed mistake lowers the standard. So every time you tolerate the lower standard, that is what you’re going to get and it’s going to take work to raise that standard.
To help you understand what you should tolerate and how high your standards should be, you just have to know yourself and what you want and need out of life, the go out and create it. Then if things enter your life that is not up to your standard, you can either get that thing to be of a higher standard or you just remove it from your life so you can focus on the stuff that matters to you.
So understanding what you should tolerate is going to be kept in your development, so you want to change something in your life, you probably need to raise your standards and find something else that you can tolerate. I couldn’t tolerate being in the military anymore so I got out. I wasn’t going to be able to change the military and I saw that I could create something larger outside of the military, so that was the path I followed. Now I am much happier because I’m doing the stuff that I tolerate in my life and it gives me a lot of purposes. I’m not sacrificing who I want to be and this is exactly how I want my life to be, and this gives me a joy that I’ve never experience before and don’t want to lose.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, you get what you tolerate. So figure out the life that you want to have with your career, relationships, and lifestyle, then figure out what you need to tolerate in order to obtain those things. It’s probably going to uncomfortable and you’re going to face rejection as you move towards the life you desire, but it’s what’s required. If you can’t tolerate these uncomfortable things, then you’re life is going to stay the same and be filled with things that you don’t truly enjoy. Life is short and the goal of life is not to exist for 100 years but to live for those 100 years. So if you want to live life, raise your standards, and execute. Do this and I think you can have a pretty great life. And if you need help, then ask for help.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is something that you’re tolerating in life that you shouldn’t tolerate anymore? Do you need to raise your standards in an area of your life? How can you raise your standards? Are you satisfied with your standards? The goal is to see what you should and shouldn’t do with your life. If you can spend more time on the stuff you enjoy, then life will be good but this requires work. So put in the work and start growing.
