Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista, where my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how you should take care of the only vehicle that will carry you through life. If you don’t know what that is, it’s your body. With your body, you can’t go out and buy a new one. You can get new parts but that can only do that so much.
Warren Buffett shares a story that at age 16, you get a genie that asks you, what type of car do you want. A Ferrari, a BMW, a compact car, a luxury sedan, or whatever car you choose, the only stipulation is that you have to keep that car for the rest of your life.
If you had to keep a car for the rest of your life and could switch to another one, you would probably take care of that care to the best of your ability for the rest of your life. You would do all the maintenance and you would clean it routinely.
The problem is that during our teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s, most of us are not taking care of our bodies the way they should be. It runs and gets you to your destination but things are a little shaky.
If you don’t put the right fuel in your body, then you’re not going to have the energy to go through your day. Your brain uses 20% of the calories you consume even though it makes up five percent of your total body weight. So if you put the right type of fuel in your body, you’ll be able to make a better decision, you won’t be sleepy, and you will get less frustrated.
Then you’ll also have less mechanical problems. A lot of the chronic illnesses we deal with like high blood pressure. high cholesterol and diabetes are caused by the fuel that we put into our body. There are other factors that can cause these issues but the food is one of the best cures that we can implement in our lives immediately.
I know I wouldn’t be able to perform the way I am now if I constantly put junk into my body. I need to be able to perform at my highest level and that is going to come from eating right.
When it comes to working out, that’s like the tune-up. The body was meant to move and we need to make sure that we change the oil every day. When you exercise, you’re getting your heart rate up which means that your heart is doing more work, which is a good thing for you. Muscles need to be broken down so they can be built back up stronger.
I know I don’t want to take up when I’m 50 years old and have my body just be broken down. That can be very expensive to fix. A heart attack can cost over $100,000 to fix. Plus it can set you back a month in terms of time where you can’t go back to work and it can cause a lot of emotional stress for your loved one.
People are relying on us and we need to make sure that we take care of ourselves. I know I don’t want to be a burden on my family if I can prevent it and I know taking care of my body is going to increase the odds that don’t happen.
I’ve been hurt in the past where I could move. I have three herniated disks in my lower back and I couldn’t move out of bed for three days. It sucks when you can’t do a simple thing like going to the bathroom or going to the kitchen to get something to eat. It takes away your freedom and I hate when I lose my freedom like that. I also tore my ACL and was restricted to what I could do.
These experiences make me realize that I need to take care of myself. I also heard that people who have don’t get the right amount of sleep don’t remove the brain plaque from their minds and it causes dementia and Alzheimer’s in the future. These are slow creeping illnesses that can be prevented but they come so slowly that we don’t even pay attention to what is really going on.
The world has a lot of offer and in order to enjoy it, you need to be able to move through it. I would just make sure that taking care of your body is the highest priority you make. You don’t want to be that person that complains that they can’t do something because they have some type of restriction like a bad back or hip. Then you’re just going to bring other people down to your level and be as adventurous.
This is very simple but like I always say, the easiest thing to do as an individual is to get distracted as a person. It’s easy to push things off and say that you can do it tomorrow. The thing is when you do that, you just get one percent worse off. Nothing that you can really see but you start to test yourself again and realize that you don’t have it anymore. Then you have to do double the amount of work to get back where you started. One of my goals is to do 30 pull-ups a day and if I take a week off, I drop off dramatically in terms of what I used to do. So I know I have to keep it up.
Another thing is that people just adapt to their current body situation and are not aware of what they can really do as a person if they took care of themselves. It’s like having poor eyesight and then finally putting glasses on for the first time, you realize that you haven’t been living life. Don’t be that person.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, your number one priority as a person is to take care of the only vehicle that will take you through life and that is your body. Everything else should be secondary and if you do this, then you’ll be able to help more people and accomplish more in life. So don’t neglect your body because you can’t get another one yet.
