Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how you should always be giving value. Back in the day, countries believed that value was based on what countries had and not what they produced. So countries would try to gather as much gold as possible while trying to export as much as possible. This vastly helped out companies like the British East India Company who was largely protected by Great Britain. This system largely benefited Great Britain, but there were holes in the system and just caused a lot of oppression.
When you try to take, take, take, it’s not going to make both sides happy and the other side is going to figure out how to game the system, but overall the consumer is going to suffer by paying a higher price for their goods and the weaker countries are not going to develop as fast. This is going to happen within our communities. People who are only focused on taking all they can get without giving much value, are toxic people to have in a community. It will take a strain on relationships and things won’t be able to develop as much as they can.
I believe as a person, we should strive to give as much value as possible. If everyone did that, then the world would be a better place to live in. I’m trying to give as much value to the world by doing these podcasts, writing books, and creating videos based on my talents. The meaning of life is to figure out where your talents are, and the purpose of life is to give it away as much as possible.
And if you can give your talents to enough people, you can make a pretty good living for yourself. This is going to take effort and things won’t be easy at times, but by giving away your talents, you can create a reputation for good work and then it will create a signal for people to come to you for your talents. Then you can charge them.
One of the things you need to learn how to do is learn how to market your giving. If you’re like me, then you have to have a good e-mail list, a solid social media presence, and a network of friends that knows your work.
When you give, don’t expect anything back, just put it out in the universe and make sure you’re constant with it. If you slow down and do something else, you will lose the momentum in the area and you will just have to start over with your hard work.
There is a law called the Law of Reciprocity, which states that if you do something for someone else, they will want to do something for you. This is not the case every single time, but people will feel that if you give them something, they want to pay it back. So if you give a lot of value, and then ask for something, then they will be more likely to say yes to you than someone who asks for something without giving much value.
If you think about it, if people provided a lot of value every time they interacted with people, the world could be a better place and it doesn’t have to be anything of monetary value. You can give value by giving someone a compliment, making them laugh, telling them about a new opportunity in their field, introducing them to someone that can help them out with a problem they are trying to solve, giving a list of books to read or YouTube videos to watch, inviting them out to meet a new group of friends.
There are a lot of ways to give value without spending much money. You will pay with your time, but it could generate a lot of new opportunities for yourself. Right now, I’m trying to do collaborations with other Latino Professionals to help give value to their platform by doing Facebook Lives or Instagram Lives. I believe it’s very important for Latinos to know about their money and how to become the best versions of themselves possible because if they can become stronger people that have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances, it will have a compounding effect on their community. And if the community is stronger, then that means that the country can become stronger, and if the country becomes stronger, then the world can become stronger.
This is a long game to place and I can’t do everything, but I can start saving my slice of the world to hopefully make it a better place. All we can do in life is strive to know who we want to be as an individual, be that individual, and be a good person in the process.
It’s easy to be a taker, who doesn’t want to make their community better and try to take as much as they can from their environment. It’s natural for people to get as many resources as possible but we have the ability to create even more resources if people can be in a giving mindset.
You can have two plus two plus two if you bring the right twos the table. An A player is 32 times more valuable than a B player because they are really good at their craft and are able to give out their craft at a higher rate than B and C players. It would be a shame if that A player didn’t give their gift to the world. We might not have all the amazing stuff we have now if people didn’t give out their talents. They are getting compensated for their talents and that’s okay. Money is a tool to show value. Well, price is what people pay, and value is what people get. So your price should always be lower than the value.
You might have to add some other non-tangible things to the product or service to make it worthwhile. You might be selling a service, like eyelash extensions but then you can create an offering that increases the value that doesn’t cost you much money. Like you can give some eyelash extensions, provide a manual on how the person can take care of their lashes, provide some other type of beauty product that will enhance the surrounding features of the lashes, and give them a five YouTube videos that teaches them how to make their eyelashes stand out with a wardrobe or make-up.
My sister is a hairstylist and does eyelash extensions so I am just saying all this because I like to see how businesses can offer more value to its customers. If I had to choose between two different companies and one was just giving me the eyelash extension but the other one was offering my all those extra for little bit more money, I would go with the second company because I know I need more than just eyelash extensions to create the entire package and people want it easy for them to succeed.
This can then get you more sales, and make you more money so you can work fewer hours but make more money. So you don’t necessarily need to spend more money to add more value to an existing service. Plus people who pay, pay attention and will more likely follow through and the process to make sure they get the best results.
They are just making my life much better because if I had great lashes, I would have more confidence and I improve other areas of my appearance without realizing that I needed to, then that person saved me a lot of time and I will likely to give back to them in terms of referrals and money.
So at work, figure how you can give more value that shows you’re worthy of a raise and how you stand out from your competitors. I don’t believe people should get raises just because of seniority, they have to earn it. I was in the Marines, and I hate working for incompetent people. There were some officers and senior enlisted folks that I was working for, and because they were more senior, I had to listen to what they said. I was like, you just hear because you wanted a stable job and you’re not very good at your job. They were takers in my mind because they didn’t really invest in getting better at their jobs and other people had to pick up the slack, which included me.
I guess it made me better because I’m ambitious and was able to do more work but I feel I would have outworked anybody that came my way anyways.
