Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about being hungry with your goals. Whatever you’re trying to accomplish in life, there will be obstacles that will get in your way. I just left my last financial planning firm in February and I thought it was only going to take a month to get my licenses approved for the new financial planning firm that I was creating but it actually took four and a half months to get everything established. I had constant thoughts about quitting but I realized that this is what I want to do for my living.
I know that I don’t want to work for someone elsewhere they have to tell me what my schedule is going to be and when I can take off time. I love to work and working for myself is actually good for me because I would gladly put in more than 40 hours a week because I know it is for me. There are some moments though where things are not working out the way you want them to and you start to second guess yourself. You tell yourself that it would just be easier to take a 9-5 job with benefits and a stable workload and paycheck.
Then I remember to my times in the Marines, the Federal Government, and at my last firm, that I hate it when I have to do stuff that I don’t agree with just because I’m not the boss. One big reason why I wanted to start my own firm is that at my last firm I was told not focus on Latinos because they don’t have the net worth or assets to manage to make my practice sustainable. And in my last firm, I had to pay rent and for an administrative assistant because there was so much paperwork that had to be done since I was a broker-dealer.
Then I started listening to podcasts on how to become a better financial advisor and I came across the XY Financial Planning Association which specializes in working with Generational X and Y clients that you can meet virtually. Plus I learned that you could get people to pay a subscription to work with me. So they didn’t need a bunch of assets to work with a financial advisor. Plus at my last firm, I had to keep my self-development coaching separate but now I can combine both in a meeting.
So now I’m a fee for service financial advisor and I love it. There is so much more flexibility and I love how I can choose my own technology. I have to do more of the work myself but I’m hungry enough to do it.
Starting your own business is going to be tough, or if you choose to take on a more ambitious role at work. One of the things you need to do is just stay hungry. If you’re hungry enough, you will push through the tough moments. Nothing lasts forever and if you’re persistent enough, you can accomplish your goals. Just make sure you’re doing it in a sustainable way. Don’t take on a lot of debt and hope things will turn all right. You have to be smart about your process.
What gives me a lot of fuel is that I noticed that financial advisors don’t make up a huge percentage of financial advisors, we make up about two percent of financial advisors and the US population has about 20% Latino. So there is a huge need for Latinos and financial planning and the subscription model works really well for them. Growing up, finances could be tough and I realized that if I wanted to have more financial security for my future, I would need to take control over my own finances and that’s why I got a degree in economics and took a financial planning course at George Mason University.
I’m really passionate about helping Latino Professionals because no one is really targeting them and I know that if their finances are organized and they have a plan, then they will have a bright future with less to worry about. So I keep this in my mind when times get tough. I know that I can’t save everyone, but I can create a system that will help more people than what is currently out there.
When you’re not hungry, the first time something goes wrong, you will just quit and choose the easier thing to do. I really believe that you need a burning desire to help you achieve your ambitious goals. For me, it’s creating my own virtual financial planning business. It was such a pain to figure out how to register with the state, and it was also painful two waits two weeks to hear a response, and when I heard that response, I was told I need to fix somethings on my forms, and then I had to wait another three weeks to finally get an approval.
There were moments of doubt, but then I realized that Grow With Joe is what I am supposed to do. So really understand your why and get tips on how to become successful. I joined XY Financial Planning because I wanted a community to help when times get tough and they have been super helpful. So make sure you have a community of folks that you can reach out to when times get tough because they will.
Anything worthwhile is going to come with some type of obstacles and we just have to be hungry enough to persevere through them. Just keep going.
Thanks for listening to today’s episode, to summarize it, you have to be hungry when it comes to pursuing your goals because that hunger will allow you to keep going when times get tough since the only thing that will satisfy your hunger will be to accomplishing that goal. So remember your why and also remember that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and that grass won’t fill you up. You will be fed but it won’t fill you up like accomplishing that big goal that you’re after.
