Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how in life, if you want a life that has spoiled, stop growing as a person. Life requires energy to be put into it. If you don’t put energy into your life, then you will start to break down as a person. The key thing is that when you try something once that is challenging and that you master it, it will not be effective as a way to help you grow as a person anymore. Your development as a person is divided into four different cornerstones, your physical self, your mental self, emotional self, and spiritual self. You have to develop yourself in those areas to help you not become stagnant.
When it comes to your physical self, it’s pretty much just maintenance when you reach a certain level and just have to stay with a healthy range. You don’t need to have a 2% body fat to be considered healthy, but you shouldn’t be over a certain percent either. When it comes you your sleep, you just need to get between 7 and 8 hours. For your diet, you can have ice cream but just not at every meal. With your workouts, you don’t need to run four-mile runs, but you shouldn’t get out of breath if you have to jog a 100 yards.
When it comes to your emotional self, it’s pretty much ensuring that you don’t let your ego harm yourself. Your ego can tell you not to do something that is actually helpful for you like not to ask someone out or to take a calculated risk for the fear of failing and looking bad. You constantly have to look at your biases to make sure you’re not sabotaging yourself and your growth. You might also have to challenge yourself to do more than you thought to get over your harmful emotions. I think doing something fearful and surviving it, can be helpful like jumping off a 20 ft waterfall and working your way us. I’m scared of heights, but jumping off a 30 ft waterfall helps with overcoming with that fear and that can give me confidence in other areas of my life. So getting over your fears and insecurities will require you to work on your emotional self but will help you grow as a person than hiding in your house all day.
In this economy, it is especially to work on your mental self. As people, we have to know a lot more than our parents did and especially than people two hundred years ago. A thousand years ago, you were mainly concerned about how you were going to get your next meal. Now you have to navigate family, friends, career, and social issues. So you have to spend a portion of your day, towards learning. I love listening to podcasts on different subjects and reading different books because it exposes me to ideas on how to prepare for the future. A lot of the problems that we’re facing today have been faced by people of the past, they just look a little bit different. It’s like that Mark Twain quote, “History doesn’t repeat itself but it does rhyme.”
So when you learn different things, you can take lessons from one area and apply it to another area, and then you create something new that is also familiar enough for folks not to be scared by something. Thank god for YouTube and course sites like Udemy, where I can learn a new skill in seconds. I used YouTube heavily to help me update my WordPress website and a Udemy course that I spent $13 to optimize it for SEO. If an expert can show you how to do something quickly, pay the $13 dollars for the book or pay $20 dollars for the course because it will save you so much time and you can start growing faster as a person.
For your spiritual self, what I mean is self-actualization, where you know who you want to be, and you’re actually being that person. The person who you want to be will constantly change. Who I wanted to be as a kid, teenager, young adult, and now in my 30s is different. I say trying different things in life and be exposed to different ideas and cultures, has helped shaped my life in determining who I needed to be as a person. Then once I know who I want to be, I need to actually be that person. This will require me to be emotionally strong enough to not allow my ego or others to prevent me from being the person I need to be. So make sure you try new things and get exposed to different things so you can truly reach self-actualization and not leaving anything on the table.
It’s amazing to see how I have grown over the past 33 years. From a humble beginning as the son of two blue-collar workers, where my dad is an immigrant from Mexico. To go into the Marines, to getting my education, and to start my own businesses. I’m excited to see where life where to take me next as I build up my businesses for the future. I have somethings I want to accomplish in the future and that will only come if I continue to grow as a person.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it if you want a life that has been spoiled, just stunt your growth as a person. If you stunt your growth, then you’ll just start decaying as a person until your too weak to change your situation and instead of dictating what you want out of life, life will dictate what you will get out of life and you might not like what life has to offer you. This is all about taking control of your life with the decisions you make for yourself. Make good decisions for yourself and your life will turn out pretty well most of the time. Make bad decisions and you’re pretty much ensuring a life that will get spoiled. Which decisions will you start making today and tomorrow for your life now?
