Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how you shouldn’t worry about outcomes, you can only focus on what you did. A lot of life is out of your control because it depends on other people, so a good way to get a more positive outcome is to focus on your process.
Success is not guaranteed and you can do the same thing as someone else and they just got a lucky break and you didn’t. The key thing is that you just have to get back to the batter box and take another swing.
What we can’t do is get up to that batter’s box on the first attempt, try to swing for the fences, and then quit because you stroked out.
What needs to happen is that you go back to the drawing board, see what you did wrong, get some coaching, and then try again. You might look like a fool, but if anybody says anything, it’s because they’re not the ones trying. I will never make fun of someone who is trying and I’m not competing against. If it is a competition, then I will say something to try to get into the other person’s head but that’s different.
I read a lot about successful people, and all of them took many swings at the plate and didn’t quit. Right now I’m trying to grow my business, and I just know I have to focus on inputs. I can’t worry about immediate success. If I focus on immediate success, then I’m just going to get frustrated and not want to do anything.
I’m not a big fan of vision boards because they are too far in the future for me to really care. If I create a vision board with a fancy car, I’m not close right now to get that car. What I like to do instead is to focus on the next successful thing that I can do. That might be contacting 20 leads a day. That might mean taking a course and finishing a course.
I get a lot of satisfaction out of writing down my goals and working towards them. To help accomplish my goals, I need to focus on the inputs that will help me finish my goals. I usually break down my goals into hour actionable steps that I can put on my calendar. If it’s not on my calendar, then it won’t get done. This also requires me to prioritize what is important.
By having the right inputs, I can increase the likelihood of getting the output that I want. But whatever output I get, it is what it is. I can’t get upset, I just have to keep going. This can be a grind. I’ve been working trying to make a business for the past four years. I’m so much better as a financial planner and business owner now than I was four years ago and that’s because I kept at. I’m more knowledgeable, I have stronger relationships with my clients, I’m better at identifying the root causes of problems, I can complete my tasks faster, and I’m more confident than ever.
By continuing with my inputs and reviewing them, I will improve on all those things and I’ll get to where I want to go in the future. If you get a setback, you can get upset for five minutes, but then ask yourself how you can just move one step in the right direction, and then keep taking steps.
Life is about action, the more action you take in life, the luckier you’ll become. If you do get a lucky break, keep going, because in today’s environment, things fade pretty quickly, and people are always asking what have you done for me lately. So you have to go back to the batter’s box. The more articles you can write, the more videos you can make, the more e-mails you send, the more you study, the more you exercise, the more you eat healthily, the more you meditate, and so many other things, the better off you will tend to be off in the future. It’s not going to come immediately most likely and if it hasn’t come yet, just keep taking more action. To take the swings though, it will take effort and can be uncomfortable at times and since people like to avoid pain, we don’t step up to the batter’s box and swing. It’s just easier to stay in the dugout but if you stay in the dugout, you’ll eventually get cut and won’t have any more attempts to swing the bat and then bigger problems are going to happen for you.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, you need to focus on input, not outputs. You be far more successful in life if you do this than going for perfection. When you’re doing your inputs though, focus on my making them as close to quality as you can, given your restrictions. I could make these podcast episodes a lot better if I spent more time on them but then I wouldn’t get anything else done in life. Because I’ve been focusing on inputs, I’ve gotten a lot better at this. I can’t believe I’ve done a 119 of these and I’m just going to keep going. If I do this along with doing the other important things in my business, then I’ll get the output I want. Don’t worry it’s coming.
