Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about what you should do if you have two great two offers on the table. The answer is that you should take the offer that is the most challenging and will help you grow faster down the road. I believe in this new economy, we need to constantly challenge ourselves as people, which will help us grow into better versions of ourselves in the future.
If you take the job that is not as challenging and kind of easy, what tends to happen is that you will get complacent and you just stop growing as a person. Plus if the job is easy, then you’re not growing as fast as you could be if you would have taken the job that is most challenging. In two years, the person that takes the more challenging job might be at level ten while the other person is still at level 2. If you do challenging things, then level 2 will seem a lot easier earlier on then if you decide to take things slow.
Kobe Bryant would work out three times a day while other NBA players would only workout twice a day. Kobe Bryant would work out at 5 am, then eat, and rest, then be back at the gym for another workout at 11 am, then he would eat, and rest, and then he would have another workout in the afternoon. So after one summer, he would have a lot more workouts in than he competition, and it showed during the regular NBA season and in the playoffs. When you have more reps that are challenging, it’s just going to mold you into a better person.
This is why you should choose the offer that is going to be challenging. It is going to be uncomfortable and you might mess up but if you stay persistent, work hard, and learn from the mistakes, then life will turn out better for you. Now that I look back at my own life, I wish I would have done some more challenging things in life because they would have served as a better learning opportunity and I would be more of a beast now than I am now.
So now looking forward to my life, I’m going to start taking on more challenging things that will help me accomplish what I want to accomplish in my life. We only have one shot at life, might as well try to figure out what I can accomplish in life. I hate to see wasted potential in life because it causes people to make regrets in life and if you have regret, then if you have regrets in life, you won’t be as happy or satisfied with life as you could be and then this might bleed into other parts of your life.
There is a difference between mistakes and regrets though. I got into a serious car wreck when I was in high school that was reckless on my part. I have regrets about that but I have made peace with that and I’ve said I’m sorry to the people I affected. Then you just got to move on with your life. It was a mistake and we make mistakes. The best thing we can do is just be a better person in the future and not make the same mistake twice.
Going back to the two great offers, don’t see yourself short, you can learn how to grow into the role. If you’re struggling through, go out and seek help from someone at work or do your own research. If you do this, then you’ll be better off. If you’re afraid of going into a managerial role and it’s a great offer, ask your employer to give you some training. If they don’t have a program at work, then find a private solution that can help you own. If it helps you be better at your job and it makes the firm more profitable, then they won’t have a problem with it.
By taking on more and more challenging roles, it can help you with even more difficult challenges in the future and if you don’t spend any time growing yourself, you’ll just crumble when that next challenge comes and that challenge might be the one that takes your life to the next level. It’s like the quote, success is when preparation meets opportunity. So we have to constantly prepare ourselves for the next opportunity. This doesn’t require to work 24 hours on yourself. Look at Kobe Bryant, he still took time to rest and focus on other things, but it also required him to remove a lot of unimportant things from his life so he could do that. Greatness requires sacrifices so you just have to figure out what level of success you want. Not everyone needs to be like Kobe, but if you were a tenth of Kobe, then that would also be very good as well.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, if you have two great offers on the table, choose the one that is going to be more challenging for you. It is just going to help you become a better person. I recently just decided to start my own firm and it’s very challenging but I tell myself that this is what is required for my future success. I also tell myself that I rather die in freedom than to succeed in chains. I crave freedom and by challenging myself to become better as a person is the only way I can secure that freedom. Plus going after challenges in life is going to help me realize what my full potential is going to be in life. And then when I die, I will ensure that there is nothing in the tank and I died on E. This is the way to live life, don’t live with regrets. So challenge yourself and see what you can accomplish.
