Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how you do anything is how you do everything. One of the biggest things I hate to be is a hypocrite. If I say I’m going to do something, then I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. I do mess up from time to time, but I own my mistakes and I learn from them.
I’m a big believer in how you do anything, is how you do everything. Van Halen used to give a contract to music venues that had a specific clause in there to have only green m&m’s in the green room. If the green m&m’s were not in the room, then they would trash the room. They weren’t being divas because they believed green m&m’s tasted better than the other color m&m’s, they added that rule because of all the other stuff that their music tour required. They had specific requirements for how the stage needed to be set-up and if the people at the venue cut corners, this could cause injuries to the band members.
Since Van Halen usually came in for such a short period of time and had to do other things like promotions, they didn’t have time to check all of the equipment at the venue. So the green m&m’s were a signal that the venue was a professional establishment that had high standards. So if you ensured that the green m&m’s were correct, then probably everything else was good to go as well.
If someone acts out, it usually a good sign that is who the person is deep down and you can use that as a signal to address the issue or get away from it. It can also show what you care about and what you don’t care about. Right now my car is a mess because I don’t value cars. I believe they’re a necessary evil right now and I just want to spend the least amount of money in my car. What I do spend a lot of money on is books, courses, and different restaurants. I value those experiences and I believe I can become a better person by doing those things.
I also get told that I show up early for things, and I value time a lot and I don’t like it when people waste my time and I’m not going to waste someone’s time. There are times when I’m not on time but it’s doesn’t happen very often. Usually, now I’m late because I’m having some type of technological issue or traffic when I was driving but I made sure to send a text as fast as possible to let them know that I’m coming.
So if you don’t have high standards for yourself, it will show in some way in your life. If you don’t treat the staff at a restaurant nicely, it will show how you will treat other people as well. There are companies that take potential hirees out to lunch and the hiring manager will tell the restaurant to purposely mess up the order of the hirees order to see how they respond. The hiring manager wants to ensure that they are hiring the right people and how you act in that situation is going to be a pretty good indicator of how you will react at work.
As people, we can’t hide our true intentions at all time and it will come out. Don’t believe that you can change people, people have to change on their own. And hopefully, after a couple of bad interviews, they will start to realize that it’s not the job’s fault but that it’s the person’s fault for not getting the job. Then that person will start to change themselves for the better. I don’t know how many people actually reach this conclusion but it’s going to be required.
So if you look at yourself, start asking yourself if there is anything that you need to improve on. I guess a big thing to know if you’re on the right track is to ask yourself “Am I proud of this thing?” I know for myself and my care, I’m not very proud of the condition it is in but I don’t really care about it. What I do care about is how I present myself and information to my clients. And how I present myself in this podcast. Each one of these podcasts is about 8 minutes long but it takes me an hour and a half to produce this episode. It takes me time to write the episode out, to record it, to edit it, and to post it online. I could easily just record an episode in ten minutes, and just post it online but I want to make sure the flow of the episode is up to my standard, all the ums and buts are mostly removed, and all the deep breaths are removed. I don’t want to release a substandard product because then that is just a reflection of me. I know I won’t be the best for a while but I need to just have higher standards for myself while I’m on my journey to get better.
I really appreciate it when someone pays attention to the details because that is where greatness lies. When I go get a haircut, I pay attention to the person cutting my hair. Are they paying attention to the details or they just following the same pattern as they do with everyone else? With a haircut, a small difference can make all the difference between looking like trash and looking amazing. So I would pay attention to the details in your life because it will show how much you care.
You can’t care about everything, but the things that you spend most of your time on, you should care about the details. The details also help with relationships. It shows that you care and that you’re taking the relationship seriously. So if you want to be taken more seriously with your life, care of the details and learn about the details as well. Most people don’t have these high standards and it shows.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, how you do anything is how you do everything. You have to realize that people don’t really change and will eventually show their true selves. Also, if you want to have a better life for yourself, study and implement the details of your profession into your daily life. Most people don’t live in the details and that’s why the mediocre lives. When someone pays attention to your details, you fill good and why wouldn’t you want to give the same feeling back.
