Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how it takes ten years to become an overnight success. If you look at musicians like Justin Beiber and Shawn Mendes, it might seem that they just came out of nowhere to become huge successes but it took a lot of time and hard work the reach their lives.
If you look at someone that plays a professional sport, you don’t see all the hours they put in to become masters in their craft. In college, while everyone else is going out and partying, they are spending that time on training. You don’t see the hard work that people put into their craft so it seems that the success came effortlessly.
When you focus on someone’s else success, that is going to two things for you. It’s going to make you depressed and it’s going to take away time from your own success. Both are bad for your self-development and mental health. These are two things you want to protect.
So focus on the things you control. You can’t control other people and if you could, that would mean that people could control you too. And would you want that? I wouldn’t want someone else to have the ability to control me.
So I’m going to focus on my goals and dreams, and just have the realization that ambitious goals take a long time to complete. Since I’m starting over from scratch, I just got another ten years before I get the success I want to have in the future.
Since the future isn’t here, I can only focus on what I can do today. Most people overestimate what they can do in a day but underestimate what they can do in a year. And if you just stay consistent with your work over a year, you will notice a huge change in your circumstances and your personal development.
Every day, I dedicate about 20 – 30 minutes to reading a day. If I do this, I can read at least 36 books a year. I’ve been doing this for the past 6 years and I’ve read over 200 books and I know the person I am today is so much better than I was six years ago. I’m wiser, I know who I want to be, and I’m going after the goals that are truly important to me.
My ultimate goal down the road is that I want to create my own financial planning firm with associate advisors underneath me. This is a hugely ambitious goal that is going to go to take at least 10 years to come true, but I’m working towards it by getting clients now, the understanding the business side of financial planning and working on my brand. If I was to get what I wanted now, I don’t think I would be that successful with it because I wouldn’t have the experience to handle the challenges of running an operation that big. So I just have to be patient and follow the process.
I’m learning so much from the association that I joined to help get started with running my own firm, which is XY Financial Planning. Plus now I have an opportunity to sit down with my clients and see what they need with financial planning. I think this is important because I will truly understand the difficulties that people go through when it comes to reaching their financial goals. I will have the information and this should just help me down the road when I have associate financial advisors underneath me. The reason I want to grow is that I want to help out a lot of Latino households with financial planning.
As one person, I can only really help out up to 100 households before I run out of time. If I have ten financial advisors underneath me, then we can help out 1,000 households. That is more families that would get financial advice than if I was just going at it alone, but I need to have the experience to make that reality last. This is why it takes ten years to become an overnight success. You need to build up the experience so you can your brand as a person can improve. Once enough people know about you and your services, then that’s when you will start generating more business.
It’s like that analogy about banks and money. Bank doesn’t want to lend you money when you need the money but will want to lend you the money when you don’t need it. It’s a tough situation to be in because it would be really helpful to have the money in the beginning stages when you don’t have much a brand to cover any shortfalls but once you grow, you have enough business to cover all your shortfalls.
There is the uncertainty that I have to deal with but I just tell myself the worst that can happen is that I can get another job. I basically sold all my stuff to live in Mexico and just have my suitcase, so there not that much that I could really lose, and I just keep going with my financial planning business and just keep putting in the time until I reach my ten years. So wherever you are in life right now, just realize that it’s going to take time to reach your ultimate goal in life and it’s going to require action, ten years of action. But once you reach your goal it will all be worth it. This is what keeps me going and I’m not going to stop until I reach the place I want to reach in life. I’m just enjoying the process right now and I’m not going to let other people’s success hold me back.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, it takes ten years to become an overnight success. So you can’t be upset at this process because this is the process that 99% of folks follow to help them live the life they want to live. And the best way to help you become an overnight success is to get started today. First, you gain the experience, then you build up your brand, and then you get control over your life. This is a process that takes a long time. It might not take the full ten years but it just takes time. You will make mistakes as I have in the past, but you just move past those successes and keep moving towards your goals. If you can learn to love the process, then life will be good. There will probably be a lot of stressful times but loving the process will make up for and know that you’re on the way to getting the life you want.
