Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the saying, “A moment on the lips, forever on the hips” and how this applies to our lives outside of food. I first heard this saying like fifteen years ago and it’s supposed to serve as a reminder to watch what you eat.
You might get pleasure from those food items but what is going to happen is that you will deal with the burden of excess fat on your hips. Obliviously there is a balance between being disciplined and partaking in indulgences and the key is to make sure you’re not partaking too much into indulgences or you’re enjoying something now for five minutes, which will then end up as a burden for a really long time.
You can say the same thing about unprotected sex. It can feel great but it could lead to having to take care of someone for the rest of your life. And having a child can bring a lot of joy but it can also bring a lot of stress. You just have to be fine with your decision. But if you’re not ready to have a kid yet, then don’t fall for the five minutes of pleasure.
We don’t want to fall down into a pit of mediocrity because we enjoy something in the short run. Lately, with covid-19, I’ve been watching a lot of Community on Netflix. I’m enjoying the show but I also have a tendency to binge something until I complete it. One 20 minute episode can easily lead to six episodes or more. This then takes away from my other activities like working out, reading, and working on my business. With covid-19, there isn’t really anything to do besides stay in my Airbnb, so it’s easy to get caught up in the five-minute pleasures.
It’s hard to say how long we’re going to be practicing social distancing but now is a time where we can fall into these five-minute traps because there is not a lot of things going on. Then I might have these bad habits that are causing me to have a mediocre life.
Like always, life is a balance but you don’t want to indulge too much into five-minute pleasures because it can cause us to get weaker. Holding on too much fat on the hips can lead to health problems and other issues.
So if you want to indulge in that five-minute pleasure, make sure that you earned and adding something to minimize the effects afterward. This will protect your future self from the harmful after-effects and cause you to have more control and flexibility over your life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, a moment on the lips, forever on the hips. So when you go for that second serving of dessert or watch that sixth episode straight episode on Netflix, make sure that you earned it and it’s not going to be too harmful to your future self. Discipline creates freedom because it prevents you from digging a deeper hole that you need to get out of. And that’s the point, don’t too many harmful things today that is going to be harmful to your future self. And your future self is probably talking crap about your present self because of the harmful things you did today or in the past.
So in your journal, ask yourself, is there an activity that you’re indulging too much into? Is your environment causing this behavior? Is it your belief system or is it friends and family that is causing you to indulge too much into pleasure. Another thing to think about is are you not indulging enough? Life is a balance and if you do it right, then you can live a pretty fulfilling life.
