Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. Your can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about if something is simple or cliche, it’s probably the right thing to do. I think we like to make life more complicated than it is actually is because if something is simple, it usually means it’s not the easy thing to do.
When it comes to being healthy, people want to find shortcuts to health and will do special exercises and diets but then after a while, they stop doing those things and get back to the same situation they were in. The thing with diets is that you just want to make sure you’re eating fewer calories than you’re consuming. A pound of fat has 3500 calories. so if you can have a deficit of 3500 calories over a week, then you’ll lose a pound. This is the basic format for losing weight and there are some caveats, but it really is this simple. You might have to give up drinking or bread, and you might not want to do that. Simple but not always easy to do.
If you decide to run your own business, it just requires a lot of stamina to keep going and to be a problem solver. Over the past year, I’ve taken a lot of digital marketing courses, and a lot of what they teach is that you just need to constantly produce content. I’ve been doing my podcast for over a year now and there are some days where I don’t want to do it because things are not going my way, but I just remember my goals, and it gives me the strength to keep going.
Writing down your goals is something that people have heard over and over again but from my experience, most people don’t do it. Writing down your goals puts your dreams out into reality and then you have something to focus on in your life. Since I want to continue to grow this business, I got to have the stamina to keep going and I was listening to Russell Brunson’s new book Traffic Secrets and he said you have to produce something new every day for three to five years. He’s been in business for 17 years so he knows what he is talking about. He also gives other tips to become successful but producing content every day just keeps you top of mind.
It’s hard to produce content every day at times, but persistence matters. Now there are other things I need to do to become a success and I heard them from other folks besides Russell Brunson, so I just need to do them. The thing with those simple and cliche sayings is that they require endurance or doing something uncomfortable and we just have to realize that if we want to grow, then we can’t stay in the comfort zone.
A lot of these daily lessons that I teach are simple, but the execution is going to require us to do something new until we’re good at it and we have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, which is not cliche saying but most people don’t like to be uncomfortable. When there is uncertainty and the potential to look like a fool, the ego wants to protect itself but we have to realize that no one is perfect and we make mistakes. Another cliche but something we should follow.
I want to say, it took like five years or so in following these cliches and simple sayings before things started to click. I’m working on my business, and it just requires stamina, being a problem solving, and being okay with uncertainty. Once you start seeing the simple things working, then you just go with it, but it usually takes a while before you start seeing results. When it comes to working out, people don’t usually start noticing your results until three months of sticking to your routine. With business, it’s going to be longer most likely. Of course, there are always going to be exceptions to the rule, but do you want to bet your future on being lucky? I know I don’t want to place my future on the roll of a die. I want to make sure that if the die rolls 1-6, I can still win in some way and that is going to come from following the simple and cliche advice.
Just don’t get distracted by the talk, and it’s better to do something than just to think about doing something or how something should be, because if you do then you’re just going to be in the same position as before. So follow the simple advice and change your life for the better.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it if it’s simple or cliche, it’s probably the right thing to do. If someone is trying to sell you on a shortcut without working really hard, it usually means you have to spend money on something that is not going to last. This simple and cliche advice is meant for you to take action and not have your ego harm you. Plus if you have a bunch of simple rules for yourself, then your life won’t be the complex, and complexity requires a lot of different things to go right. When you keep things simple, then you need fewer variables to go right in order to become successful. Following the simple and cliche advice is the equivalent of just hitting singles and taking walks to win a baseball game. It’s not as exciting as hitting triples and home runs, but you’ll get on base more, and if you’re on base more, then you’ll have more chances to score and win your game. So have the mental endurance to follow the simple advice and don’t get distracted by the shiny distractions.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is a simple or cliche piece of advice that you should be following? What can you change in your environment to help you execute on that advice? Do you need an accountability partner? Do you need to remove something from your environment? I would say, review your goals and then determine what you need to do within your day. Don’t try to do everything at once. Pick the one thing that you should do to make everything else easier in your life, and do that. Once you master that, then move onto something else.
