In this episode, we discuss how you shouldn’t focus on building a legacy or trying to get other people’s approval because in the future, not many people remember anyways. And how it’s more important to focus on being a good person and doing important things.

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista.  In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how in 100 years from now, who will remember you? And the answer is probably no one. You could build the biggest building and how your name on it, but no one is going to know who you are. If you look at buildings like Rockafeller Plaza and campuses like Standford, most people don’t know the people behind those buildings.

Ask a kid today and they probably won’t know who Gerald Ford and Warren G. Harding were, who were US Presidents. They might know the name but they won’t know who these people really were. They won’t know their lessons, how they were as people, and how they treated people.
I’m sharing this with you so that you know that even if you become president of the United States, people won’t know who you are. I bet a lot of folks don’t even know who were presidents in other countries. I certainly don’t, I’m not going to research them because they are not important to me. And this is the point, people are focused on themselves and their friends and families. They don’t have all the time in the world to know trivia facts on who the 10th president of the United States was. And I don’t know this answer, and I don’t learn it because it’s not going to help make better decisions with my life. I might here this in a trivia contest, but I’ll gladly lose that trivia match because who wants a $10 gift card when I can use real wisdom to make a million dollars.

I’m not going to focus too much on stuff that is not important and chasing reward can do that. You can be the best salesman in your company, or you can make a difference in your community, but it’s not the status you should be chasing, it’s the satisfaction that you’re doing important things and not focusing on being an important person. It won’t make you happy if you chase things, because there will always be something to chase.

This is why I’m focused on doing important things because I know true happiness for me is challenging myself and doing things that will give me true satisfaction. Almost every morning, I read for 45 minutes while I drink my morning cup of coffee. Then I go for an hour walk where I either eat breakfast tacos or chocolate chip pancakes as a break. Sometimes with a passion fruit smoothie. Then I come home, write a podcast episode, and in my journal. Then I get to work. Then I take another walking break at some point. And when I walk, I listen to a podcast so I can learn 80% of the time. 20% of the time its music. Then get back to work until it’s time to eat dinner. Then I either work some more or I watch something on Youtube or Netflix. Right now I’ve been into these sports medical videos that explain how basketball players like Brandon Roy hurt themselves. And I’m watching Atlanta now. Then I go to bed and start the process over.
This routine gives me so much satisfaction because I’m living life on my terms and I feel like I’m doing work that makes a difference. I don’t care who remembers me 100 years from now, I’m just trying to do important things to do.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, in 100 years from now, who will remember you? The answer is probably none or very few people. And those few people won’t be impressed by your name on the building. They can be impressed by your ideas but don’t focus on trying to impress these people. Just focus on doing important things. That might be with your health, your family, your spirit, your friends, or your career. And you should treat these five things as balls you have to juggle and four of them are made out of glass and one is rubber. And the rubber ball is work. You can drop it and it can bounce back. If you drop one of the other balls, then they will break. So focus on the important things in life and your life should be more fulfilling.
