Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the many ways we can be creative, which can help us out in all areas of our lives. One of the main reasons why I left my old company is because I wanted to be more creative and they wanted to use what they had. They were so slow in implementing new ideas and I get it. They had a small compliance team for the number of advisors they had and it was best just to regulate all their advisors at the least common denominator, which is basically preventing the least trust advisor from communicating without their approval.
I love to be creative with my ideas because I think we need to constantly be testing new ideas so that we don’t get left behind by our competitions. The worst thing we can do is say, we’re doing this because we’ve always done it like this. Now there is some credibility to using trust methods but there should be some percentage where we are testing new ideas. The last thing I want is to be reliant on one way and then find out that the method doesn’t work anymore. This is going to cause me to panic more than have another system to rely on.
This is why I read a lot of books, listen to a lot of podcasts, and watch different YouTube videos so that I can use new ideas. Right now I’m experimenting with my Instagram, and with Facebook Lives. I have a system in place where I can test out different ideas so I see what works. I’ve done a bunch of different posts and I can see what works and what doesn’t work. And I have a lot more ideas about what to do because I consumed a lot of information.
I probably have ideas to make posts for the next four years and will get more material during this time because I’m consuming new ideas. I also like to watch certain shows and movies so that I can get new ideas on how to tell stories. I feel that I’m better at creating ideas because I’m always thinking of ideas.
Every day, I write down ten ideas, which is something that I got from James Altucher. I write ten ideas for Instagram Posts to do, YouTube Videos to make, and things that I can implement in my business usually. Now I feel that I can make connections that most people will miss and the ideas aren’t running out.
Now, not every idea is a home run, but I’m not looking to have a home run every day because those types of projects typically need time and energy to do, but I can put them on the back burner for a future date. I have my routine where I focus on what I think is important and doing this podcast is one of them. I’m at 371 episodes and I have a lot more episodes in me. This is because I’m always using my creative mind.
The key thing with being creative is that you need to be constantly exposed to different things. Right now I’m in Colombia and just went to a different city called Pereira and it was a shock that this city has different foods here. In Medellin, you can get empanadas for days but here it’s a lot of sausages and Billard halls. But now I have a different perspective on Colombia and I can use these memories to create different things in my life. I also just finished watching Avatar the Last Air Bender and the Legend of Korra and now I have different ideas on how to tell stories.
I’m not going to copy these things word for word, but I will use them as models. Now there are no new ideas under the sun, just a different way how to communicate these ideas. And the next generation is using social media to consume their information so if you can take ideas from books and podcasts and put them into a picture or a 60-second video, that is fine because people who don’t consume books and podcasts will be exposed to those ideas.
This might be tough in the beginning, but just keep putting ideas out in the world and things will be good.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, you can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. And this is a quote by Maya Angelou, RIP. She would have wanted me to share her quote and help others be creative. And we have a lot of problems in this world that require new ways of thinking to solve them. The world is constantly changing and there are many new things to discover or make better. So make sure you exercise your creative mind every day by playing, consuming new ideas, and thinking about new ideas. Trust me, you won’t run out of stuff to think about if you follow my process.
