In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should avoid giving certain people our attention because it’s going to take us nowhere. One of the worst things we can do is get in a fight on social media. No one has ever changed their mind from one. People don’t go, “Oh you made a really good point and I agree with you.”
A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still. These people might be even looking for an argument because they have nothing better to do. They have all the time in the world, and every second you give one of these people is a second you’re never going to get back again. It’s best just to ignore these people and focus on your own stuff.
The same concept to be applied to people who look like they need help. When my mom used to work as a cashier, she had these couples who would come into the store and play the video poker machines. They even came over for BBQs. So when one of the spouses died, the surviving spouse had a lot of health issues, and they were hoarders, so the surviving spouse had a lot of stuff and they had dogs and he couldn’t really walk them. My mom tried to help the person out, but he wouldn’t change his ways.
Another important lesson to know is that the chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken. So a people who are in 60s is probably not going to change. They are too stuck in their ways and won’t change. I told my mom, it was best to just wait until that person reaches out for help. You can be nice and make a meal for that person every once in a while, but don’t make it your full-time job.
Some people just want to play the victim and if you’ve seen Rick and Morty, these people are just like Jerry. Or they can be like Rick to a certain extent, but without the superintelligence. They just have something missing like the right perspective or expecting things to be a certain way and are stuck in their ways. I learned that the world is not fair a long time ago. The world is an anvil and I’m the hammer. If a hammer tries to change the anvil, the hammer is just going to break. It’s best to learn how to work with the hammer to create things that will benefit society and ourselves.
I have the philosophy that I won’t push people up the mountain, but I can help pull them up when they fall down. If you don’t know, my logo for Grow With Joe is a mountain because the word mediocre comes from two Latin words, medi which means half, and ocris which means rugged mountain. So if you’re mediocre, it means you’re halfway up the mountain. And you will never make it to the top of your mountain if you give energy vampires your attention.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, never wrestle with a pig, because you will just end up dirty and the pig will enjoy it. So make sure you’re aware of whom you’re giving energy to. Giving your energy to the right people can give you an amazing life. Give your energy to the wrong people will make you miserable. We’re not going to change people by telling them what to do, but we can inspire people with our actions and by being persistent with our actions. How someone does anything is how they do anything typically. People hardly change, then can, but you should keep checking in on them to make sure they don’t disappoint you. I’m currently reading Principles by Ray Dalio and it’s a fantastic book about managing people. It’s free on the Apple Store so make sure you check it out. Also, make sure you’re spending your time right because we can never get an hour back.
