Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how going through the fire of our challenges is what’s going to make us shine. I’ve been a financial advisor for the past six years, and it’s has been a tough journey. I’ve had constant setbacks, I went through a divorce, I lost a lot of money, and I had to start over, but looking back at my life, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
If I didn’t have all those struggles, I would not be here in Colombia exploring the world. I wouldn’t have decided to start my own financial planning firm. Instead of being out of the rat race, I would still be in the rat race. I love that I have freedom over my day. I spend every morning doing my self-care routine of reading, working out, writing in my journal, and writing a podcast episode. Then I work on things for my business and I take breaks when I want to.
The life that I know and have now, is so much better than the one I had two years ago. At my old business, I was limited in what I could do as a financial planner. I couldn’t make spreadsheets and share them with my clients, but now I can do that. A lot of financial planning software is made to sell insurance and investments on the macro-level but doesn’t help with making specific tax decisions in the current year and funding short-term goals.
To become a better financial advisor at my last firm, I spent a lot of time learning how to become a better financial advisor from a technical aspect and from a marketing aspect. This gave me the confidence to start my own firm, plus just dealing with people in my day to day activities on a daily basis. I had to prepare for meetings, do the meetings, and then try to convince the person to take some type of action, either pay a planning fee, buy insurance, or move their investments towards me. I didn’t like the selling of products piece because it felt very transactional so when I found out that I could be a fee-for-service advisor, I knew I had to make a switch.
Which required me to move back with my parents and start over. Now a year and a half later, I’m living my best life. I love living in Colombia and I love working exclusively online. I also love being my own boss, but I don’t think I would be able to handle being a business owner in the beginning. I needed to learn from others first before jumping into my own thing.
The struggle also applies to our relationships and our health. If we can make it past the struggles of having tough conversations with the people in our lives, and get past all the temptations that affect our health negatively, then we can have a lot of success in these areas. If something is painful to do, then it’s probably the right thing to do. And we can approach that painful thing like telling a loved one some tough news, in a harmful way, and we can do it in a caring way. Even if we do it in a caring way, there can still be conflict, but at least the healing process can finally begin instead of letting the cracks get bigger. If I have to face something painful and I don’t know how to address it, I reach out to someone that can help me out. Someone can always help out but you also have to get over that struggle too of asking for help.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, our struggles determine our success. I know I don’t want to have people on my team who haven’t tested themselves because they play things too safe and won’t reach greatness. Greatness requires taking calculated risks and addressing our struggles. There are no struggles in this world that will stay there forever if we take the right type of action but these struggles can serve as great teaching moments. For some reason, I and my sisters all became our own business owners and I believe a big part of it has to do with our backgrounds. We grew up in a mobile home and money wasn’t plentiful. Our parents tried their best, but we knew that if we wanted more, we had to be more like people. So we went through our struggles, and now we are having our own successes. This will be tough, but once you get to the other side, life can be pretty amazing.
