    Full Transcript

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should constantly educate ourselves so that we don’t get taken advantage of. I’m a big believer that only the educated are truly free. My goal is to read for at least 30 minutes every day, to listen to podcasts for 45 minutes while I go on my walk in the morning, and to watch an hour of educational YouTube videos in the evening. I realized awhile ago that the more I educate myself, the more opportunities that I’m going to have.
Once I turned off the television, I was able to turn on my life. I don’t watch many television shows. I have watched television in the past two weeks. I tried to watch Schitt’s Creek but I stopped during the third season. And I only watched it because I was stuck in bed and was tired of reading. I haven’t really watched television since 2012. Once I discovered non-fiction books, I just became hooked.
The reason why I’m here in Colombia is because of the book the Four-Hour Workweek. In that book, he discussed how if you can make dollars but spend in pesos, you can live a really great life. Right now, for every dollar I make in the United States, it’s like making four dollars here in Colombian pesos. So live a great life, and I don’t have to work that hard to maintain a very similar standard of living that I would get in the United States.
Plus I read a lot of philosophy books and biographies and see how people lived and realized that in my previous life, I was chasing a lot of things that weren’t worth it. I live a very simple life and I’m happy with it. I do my reading, I workout, and I work on my business. Plus I go visit different sites in the cities I’m in. Life is good.
I feel very free because I’m pursuing who I want to be and I’m not tied down to anything. What I didn’t like about my last firm were all the rules and high expectations. When I was first searching to become a financial advisor, I just thought there was one way of doing it, and that was by joining a major firm and selling their products. Then I kept learning about the industry and realized can switch from being a commission-based to a fee-for-service advisor and I can travel the world while doing it. Because I educated myself about my profession, I feel very free.
Plus studying the stoic philosophy has kept me focused on what’s important to me and not to get distracted by the unimportant and there are a lot of folks who get distracted by the unimportant stuff. And only education about many different things can give us freedom. Seneca was given a lot of money to educate the tyrant Nero, and Seneca was willing to give up his fortune to escape but Nero didn’t want that to happen and eventually forced Seneca to kill himself. So let’s be aware of the situation we’re putting ourselves in and having an education will help us in that area.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, only the educated are free. So make sure that we are educating ourselves on a daily basis. Reading or watching the news is not always educating ourselves because we are only getting one viewpoint, so we need a diverse set of ideas so that we can understand the truth the best that we can. This can prevent us from going down a path that will trap us. I would also recommend that we don’t read recent books that haven’t stood the test of time. What’s important now, most likely will be important a year from now. So make sure you’re gaining wisdom and not trivia. Do this and life should be a lot better to do.

I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should avoid getting addicted to heroin, carbs, and a steady paycheck if we want to have control over our lives, but we’re mostly going to just talk about a steady paycheck. In my past, I hated when I did stuff just to ensure I had a steady paycheck because I just traded my time for money. This is why I love working for myself and that I live in Latin America. I have no need to own a car, I don’t want to buy a home, I’m happy with renting, and I don’t want to accumulate a lot of stuff.
I basically just have two suitcases, and a backpack and this is all I need in the world. And to be honest, I probably just need one suitcase. I thought I would be wearing more dress pants and shirts, and I haven’t worn them once here in Latin America. I just wear jeans and t-shirts. So when I have a two-week layover in Florida, I’m going to send a bunch of clothes back home. I have this blue suit that I love but it’s not doing me any favors by just staying in my suitcase.
But I love how it only costs me $800/mo to live in Latin America, but I spend about $1000 on my living expenses. I don’t have that many needs, I just buy books, and I workout. If I go out for drinks here in Colombia, it will only cost me $12 to $15. This is a big change from my time living in DC and Portland. And since my expenses are so low in Colombia, I don’t have to trade my time for money. I can spend as much time on myself care as needed. My mornings are filled with reading, working out, journaling, and meditating and I love my routine. Then I can work on my passion projects to grow my business. Instead of having to work 40 hours to pay for my standard of living, my business allows me to work for about 8 hours and I pay for all my living expenses. This is because my clients are in the United States and I’m charging US prices. There is nothing better than earning dollars and spending in Pesos.
So if I have a bad month with my business, it’s not the end of the world to me because I have cash reserves to handle it. I appreciated how about a month ago, I got sick with tonsillitis and then I was experiencing back spasms, and this took me out of commission for like two weeks and I didn’t work at all. And I wasn’t worried about the money because my expenses were so low. If I was addicted to a steady paycheck, then I would be worried. I follow the stoic philosophy and the goal of this philosophy is to have control over your mind, and when we have to rely on other things, then we lose that control. So there are two ways we can approach this, we can either lower our expectations where our needs are not that great, or we can increase our assets where we can say no to things and not have to worry about things.
I’m choosing the lower expectations and needs part right now, but I’m working on increasing my assets by getting more coaching and financial planning clients. And with my clients, I can be picky and choose the best clients for myself, instead of just taking anyone that comes my way, and then I end up regretting it. I love this type of freedom and control over my life because I’m doing what’s important, and not what is needed to survive. This requires to let our ego go, where we don’t care what other people think and what we feel entitled to.
When we are addicted to things like carbs, heroin, and a steady paycheck, then we lose control over our situation and then we end up lowering our standards to get those things, and most of the time, that’s not good for us.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, the three most addictive substances on this planet are heroin, carbs, and a steady paycheck. To get over these substances, it requires discipline to say no and focus on real work, and not to have an ego. This will then give up more freedom over our lives. If we don’t consume a lot of carbs or do heroine, we are going to have more freedom over our minds and body. When we have the freedom to not accept a steady paycheck, then we can say no to things that we don’t need. It’s okay to have a steady paycheck, but just make sure we have the ability to step away if we need to. We don’t want to end up in a golden handcuff situation, where we are succeeding in chains. I will rather be free to say what I think and do what I think is the best and I can only do this if I have control over my mind and my needs.

I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how if we want freedom, control, and flexibility in our lives, we need to master ourselves first. I would like to thank the college for introducing me to learning. I remember being in this one class about family studies, and we read the book Random Family, which was about a Puerto Rican family in the 1980s. There was love, drugs, and trouble for these real characters in the Bronx. It taught me things about the family structure that I wasn’t aware of. Then in my Health Economics class, I was introduced to the Economist and that’s probably why I went off to get my degree in Economics.
I don’t know how I was introduced to podcasts, but I remember listening to these Spanish learning podcasts as I was trying to prepare myself to do a study abroad in Mexico. I guess I just started listening to other podcasts. I remember listening to a lot of Planet Money and Freakonomics radio.
But after I graduated from college, I moved to DC and I found myself in a career that I hated, but I was still listening to podcasts and there was a Freakonomics episode that was about the upside of quitting. So then I quit my job and went back to school, but I kept on listening to podcasts and reading books to expand my horizons. Then with every book, podcast, and course that I took, it just let me know more about myself and what I should be doing with my life.
I feel like I have a pretty good grasp over life and I’m just living my best life here in Colombia. Since I work on myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually every day, I’m able to overcome a lot of issues that come my way and I’m able to achieve a lot of great things in my life.
To have this control and flexibility in my life, I need to be strong internally. There is no way I could travel the world, run my own business, and live my best life if I didn’t have mastery over myself. I really love this life that I have and I would never want to go back to my old 9-5 life.
No one tells me when to wake up, where to be when I can take time off, and what I should do in my do. I get to decide all these things, but to have this power, I need to know how to control this power. I do need to be disciplined with my life, but I enjoy the things I work on and it gives me a lot of satisfaction. But I need to work on my financial planning skills, my soft skills, and make sure that I don’t let my ego get in the way of my success.
It takes work and not every day is a great day, but that pain is only temporary. I was suffering when I was doing my 9-5 life, and that is something that we need to learn how to do. Embrace the pain which teaches how to be better, and let go of the suffering that is manageable, but zaps us of all our suffering. This takes self-mastery and realizing that we can get past the pain.
Success doesn’t happen overnight, but when you reach self-mastery, you’ll appreciate the journey you made.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, no man is free who is not a master of himself as Epictetus said 2000 years ago. We can not truly be free as people unless we reach self-mastery over our lives. This is why I work on myself physically so that I can use my body in every situation. I work on myself mentally so that I can think my way out of situations and take advantage of opportunities. I work on myself emotionally so I don’t allow my ego to sabotage myself, and I work on myself spiritually so that I live a fulfilling life that isn’t wasteful. Things will be cloudy in the beginning when we are still amateurs, but with enough time and effort, we will eventually have the freedom that we desire. No need to live a life where we are strapped down by chains.

I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should be in situations where our talents are being used and we’re not being taken advantage of. As people, we should always know our worth. I’m in my thirties now and I’ve had a lot of different job experiences. I’ve seen different bosses and I’ve seen different co-workers. I also know my goals and what needs to be done to achieve those goals. When I was in the Marines, it was during my second enlistment that I knew I had to leave. I couldn’t stand this wait and see approach. The same thing happened in the Federal Government. You had to wait for openings to get your chance. There are exceptions, but you could be working 60 hour weeks and still be paid at the same rate as someone who works 20 hours a week or less.
I remember when I was a federal employee, there was another federal employee that pulled me aside and said I should probably find another job since you’re better than this job. I’m really glad I left and decided to start my own thing. The more I work, the more benefits I can see from my efforts. This takes a balance though. At my last financial planning firm, I had like 250 names in my database for financial planning, and there was no way I could handle all those people by myself. I was working way too many hours and not getting paid enough. I felt bad that I had to ignore these people in my database, but I couldn’t handle the work. And if I tried to do stuff to make my job easier by adopting technology, then it was shut down because of compliance.
I don’t like having a cap put on my potential and it really unmotivates me. So if I don’t like something, then I’m going to find something else. I know those situations are not going to be the best for me. Same thing when I worked as a personal trainer. I would have to give up 50 percent of my rate to the company and that’s a lot of money. They didn’t even really train me on how to become a better personal trainer. They did pay me a salary in the beginning but I had to clean the gym area as well so then I’m not prospecting for clients. So I had to leave that situation. If you look at most gyms, the trainer turnover rate is pretty high.
Now there is some personal responsibility that needs to happen, but the ambitious ones see that there are more opportunities to do something on their own and so they go do their own thing, and what is left behind is the mediocre folks. So this is a warning for myself that when I start hiring people, I need to take care of them and make sure that we’re working on our goals together. That means I can’t take it easy myself because ambition is the hardest human trait to contain. There are always going to be people who want to achieve more. That could be status, money, or the best is self-mastery. So don’t try to pay your people the least and don’t accept the least. There are times where we have to learn and work our way to the top, but know when you’re on that path and not on the path where we are being taken advantage of.
I’ve been doing my own thing as a financial advisor and now when I charge a planning fee, I get the whole planning fee instead of sixty percent of it, plus I don’t have people constantly changing the compensation structure on myself. This motivates me to work harder for myself because I get what works for me. This is why I’m constantly trying to learn new things, meet new people, and make sure that I’m not dependent on my income so that I don’t end up a trap in a situation I don’t want to be in. All my jobs seemed good in the beginning but then after I learned about the job, I didn’t like what was happening to me. So don’t accept a poor deal, and don’t stay in a situation longer than you have to when you find out that you’re being taken advantage of.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, they pretend to pay us, we pretend to work. Now there is a balance between being overpaid and underpaid. We just have to know what’s fair, and not be delusional about what we are entitled to. But if we’re journaling and exploring our lives, then we should know what is fair for our situation. Sometimes that situation is just a stepping stone and we can handle it for a year while we look for the next opportunity. Even if you’re in a situation that’s not the best for you, still give 100 percent effort because you will end up building up your skills and then when another opportunity comes you’ll be ready for it. Many times we just have to be patient until things open up, but the goal is not to be in a situation longer than we have to be in. Life is short and we don’t want to be in situations that are not taking advantage of our skills and talents. Not everyone is ambitious like me but if you are, then you’ll realize when you are being taken advantage of and you will make the change.

  • Our Struggles Determine Our Success

In this episode, we discuss how going through the fire of our challenges is what’s going to make us shine.

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how going through the fire of our challenges is what’s going to make us shine. I’ve been a financial advisor for the past six years, and it’s has been a tough journey. I’ve had constant setbacks, I went through a divorce, I lost a lot of money, and I had to start over, but looking back at my life, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
If I didn’t have all those struggles, I would not be here in Colombia exploring the world. I wouldn’t have decided to start my own financial planning firm. Instead of being out of the rat race, I would still be in the rat race. I love that I have freedom over my day. I spend every morning doing my self-care routine of reading, working out, writing in my journal, and writing a podcast episode. Then I work on things for my business and I take breaks when I want to.
The life that I know and have now, is so much better than the one I had two years ago. At my old business, I was limited in what I could do as a financial planner. I couldn’t make spreadsheets and share them with my clients, but now I can do that. A lot of financial planning software is made to sell insurance and investments on the macro-level but doesn’t help with making specific tax decisions in the current year and funding short-term goals.
To become a better financial advisor at my last firm, I spent a lot of time learning how to become a better financial advisor from a technical aspect and from a marketing aspect. This gave me the confidence to start my own firm, plus just dealing with people in my day to day activities on a daily basis. I had to prepare for meetings, do the meetings, and then try to convince the person to take some type of action, either pay a planning fee, buy insurance, or move their investments towards me. I didn’t like the selling of products piece because it felt very transactional so when I found out that I could be a fee-for-service advisor, I knew I had to make a switch.
Which required me to move back with my parents and start over. Now a year and a half later, I’m living my best life. I love living in Colombia and I love working exclusively online. I also love being my own boss, but I don’t think I would be able to handle being a business owner in the beginning. I needed to learn from others first before jumping into my own thing.
The struggle also applies to our relationships and our health. If we can make it past the struggles of having tough conversations with the people in our lives, and get past all the temptations that affect our health negatively, then we can have a lot of success in these areas. If something is painful to do, then it’s probably the right thing to do. And we can approach that painful thing like telling a loved one some tough news, in a harmful way, and we can do it in a caring way. Even if we do it in a caring way, there can still be conflict, but at least the healing process can finally begin instead of letting the cracks get bigger. If I have to face something painful and I don’t know how to address it, I reach out to someone that can help me out. Someone can always help out but you also have to get over that struggle too of asking for help.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, our struggles determine our success. I know I don’t want to have people on my team who haven’t tested themselves because they play things too safe and won’t reach greatness. Greatness requires taking calculated risks and addressing our struggles. There are no struggles in this world that will stay there forever if we take the right type of action but these struggles can serve as great teaching moments. For some reason, I and my sisters all became our own business owners and I believe a big part of it has to do with our backgrounds. We grew up in a mobile home and money wasn’t plentiful. Our parents tried their best, but we knew that if we wanted more, we had to be more like people. So we went through our struggles, and now we are having our own successes. This will be tough, but once you get to the other side, life can be pretty amazing.

In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we need to understand when we do things, they create secondary and tertiary events, and how this affects us and the world. I think a lot about what I do with my life and what kind of life it’s going to give me. I studied public health in college, and a lot of it was about changing peoples’ behaviors so that we have a better future.
The Department of Health and Human Services comes out with initiatives every ten years where they are focusing on different health areas that we should be focusing on from food safety to mental health, along with 43 other objectives that if fixed, can create a society where we’re spending less money on public services because people won’t be needing them and we will have more productive members of society because they won’t be as stressed and healthier.
This is a top-down approach, but we also need a bottom-up approach with our own actions. We have to be aware of our own actions because they do have consequences. We can’t wait on people from above to tell us what we need to do, we need to take action ourselves. When it comes to things like smoking, we should give people the resources to quit, because that will cost a lot less than a lung transplant in the future. We’re already going to spend the money, might as well spend a lot less than we can.
I used to sell life insurance and would have people in their 50s and 60s who would fill out an application, and when you do this, you have to put down your medical history because the life insurance company wants to know what is the likelihood that you’re going to live for a long time. They want people to pay their premiums as long as possible. Having too many policies that are used quickly will bankrupt a company. This is why people with health issues pay a lot more in coverage than healthy people. So taking the right actions and being aware of our consequences can help us out by making things cheaper for us.
The same thing applies to our relationships, we can be jerks to our friends, family, our partner, and our kids with our actions and those actions will have consequences, and they can be bad consequences that cause a generation’s worth of damage, maybe more.
When it comes to working, we can work on the wrong thing for too long, and then it causes us to hit a brick wall, and then we’re going to feel stuck. I could have easily chosen to work at my federal job, but I probably would pick up a drinking problem because I was so miserable at work.
Making different choices can be scary because there is so much uncertainty, but that short-term pain is a lot better than suffering for decades. So we just can’t look at the first level of our decisions, we also have to look into the future to see what are the secondary and tertiary effects of our actions. Then we have to analyze is what we really want for our lives. If the answer is no, then we should make a change because that future is coming if stay on the same path. These projections can’t be done with 100 percent certainty, so we have to be okay with being wrong, but if we choose not to address something with our actions, then things will just stay the same. And if we’re suffering, then we should really change things.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, don’t lose sight of your actions and consequences because if we do this, then we are going to end up in a place where we don’t want to be. So we should look at our lives and see what will this action that I’m taking today, give me tomorrow, a year from now, and a decade from now. It’s real easy to be caught up in the day to day without really pondering on what we should do with our actions. This is why journaling is a great practice to add to our day. Journaling gives the opportunity to slow things down and ponder what we should actually be doing with our day. • The Biggest Problem When It Comes To Communication

In this episode, we discuss how the illusion of communicating is the biggest problem with communication.

In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how the illusion of communicating is the biggest problem with communication. There is a really good negotiation story of how a baker and a bartender are fighting over an orange. Both want the orange for their jobs and there is only one left. Now both parties are not explaining to the other party why the orange is important to them. Now, most people start with what they want, instead of why they want something. And in this case, the reason why the baker wants the orange is for the zest to make scones, and the bartender wants the orange for the juice inside.
And this is the problem with most communication, and it’s that there is an illusion that there is communicating. If both the bartender and the baker actually communicated their needs, then they would have settled the issue a long time ago.
Right now I’m reading Principles by Ray Dalio which covers what is important for business and in life. And that required radical truth and transparency. If you don’t have this at work and in your relationships, then it’s going to cause a lot of problems. Because people are not going to be in sync, and this is just going to cause some type of conflict. And we want to avoid serious conflict.
If we communicate with radical truth and transparency, then it can cause pain, but if everyone is able to reflect on that pain and learn from it, then we can have growth. Thinking about my work experiences and my personal relationships, the worth things I did was not properly communicate or seek to receive honest feedback from others.
Now looking forward, I know what I need to do to properly communicate with folks. One thing I do at the end of my coaching meetings is what can I do to improve this relationship and is there anything I can do better to serve you. I also need to start asking my clients, is imagine one year from now, what will make this a success. If I know their expectations and they know mine, then we can communicate better. It’s when we don’t know our expectations, that’s when conflict begins and then just grows from there.
This is the biggest problem that we can have with communication, thinking that things are going well when they are not. So let’s make sure we know how to communicate and show patience and respect when we do so. If we do this then life should be better for everyone.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, the biggest problem when it comes to communication is the illusion of communication. So let’s make sure we know other people’s expectations and that they know our expectations as well. I would recommend that people read Principles by Ray Dalio for work and the Feeling Good Handbook for couples and friends. Both books can help with work relationships and personal ones. When we can have radical transparency and honesty with our communication without being a jerk, then we can see amazing levels of growth in our relationships and when we have strong relationships, we can handle more of life’s obstacles with ease. Life is already difficult enough, might as well make sure that we do things to make the journey easier.

  • Never Wrestle With A Pig

In this episode, we discuss how we should avoid giving certain people our attention because it will take us nowhere.

    Full Transacript

In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should avoid giving certain people our attention because it’s going to take us nowhere. One of the worst things we can do is get in a fight on social media. No one has ever changed their mind from one. People don’t go, “Oh you made a really good point and I agree with you.”
A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still. These people might be even looking for an argument because they have nothing better to do. They have all the time in the world, and every second you give one of these people is a second you’re never going to get back again. It’s best just to ignore these people and focus on your own stuff.
The same concept to be applied to people who look like they need help. When my mom used to work as a cashier, she had these couples who would come into the store and play the video poker machines. They even came over for BBQs. So when one of the spouses died, the surviving spouse had a lot of health issues, and they were hoarders, so the surviving spouse had a lot of stuff and they had dogs and he couldn’t really walk them. My mom tried to help the person out, but he wouldn’t change his ways.
Another important lesson to know is that the chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken. So a people who are in 60s is probably not going to change. They are too stuck in their ways and won’t change. I told my mom, it was best to just wait until that person reaches out for help. You can be nice and make a meal for that person every once in a while, but don’t make it your full-time job.
Some people just want to play the victim and if you’ve seen Rick and Morty, these people are just like Jerry. Or they can be like Rick to a certain extent, but without the superintelligence. They just have something missing like the right perspective or expecting things to be a certain way and are stuck in their ways. I learned that the world is not fair a long time ago. The world is an anvil and I’m the hammer. If a hammer tries to change the anvil, the hammer is just going to break. It’s best to learn how to work with the hammer to create things that will benefit society and ourselves.
I have the philosophy that I won’t push people up the mountain, but I can help pull them up when they fall down. If you don’t know, my logo for Grow With Joe is a mountain because the word mediocre comes from two Latin words, medi which means half, and ocris which means rugged mountain. So if you’re mediocre, it means you’re halfway up the mountain. And you will never make it to the top of your mountain if you give energy vampires your attention.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, never wrestle with a pig, because you will just end up dirty and the pig will enjoy it. So make sure you’re aware of whom you’re giving energy to. Giving your energy to the right people can give you an amazing life. Give your energy to the wrong people will make you miserable. We’re not going to change people by telling them what to do, but we can inspire people with our actions and by being persistent with our actions. How someone does anything is how they do anything typically. People hardly change, then can, but you should keep checking in on them to make sure they don’t disappoint you. I’m currently reading Principles by Ray Dalio and it’s a fantastic book about managing people. It’s free on the Apple Store so make sure you check it out. Also, make sure you’re spending your time right because we can never get an hour back.

  • An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure

In this episode, we discuss how we should look to fix small problems today to prevent bigger and more expensive problems down the road.

In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should look to fix small problems today so that we prevent bigger and more expensive problems down the road. I have a degree in economics and I’m always looking for ways to create the biggest impact with the resources I have. Economics is not about money, but more about the study of scarcity and how to use the market to set prices and allocate resources.
I remember watching this one TedTalk in college and it was an economist that was arguing out of all the problems in the world, like pollution, water scarcity, malaria, and food insecurity, we should focus on the problem that will provide the biggest benefit. All people want to focus on CO2 emissions, which is something that is important, but it’s not something that will provide the biggest benefit. We can spend billions of dollars trying to reduce CO2 emissions marginally, or we can spend those same dollars on eliminating malaria, and then we will have a population that will be more productive and able to go to school and participate in the workforce. Then hopefully they can be educated on ways to solve climate issues or know ways to reduce their CO2 significantly. The goal is to eventually spend a lot less money to get the same result that we desire. To do this, we have to look at many things to see how they are interconnected and see what is the thing we can fix to provide the biggest benefit down the road.
This same concept applies to our lives. I have recently been dealing with back spasms and it’s because I have herniated discs in my lower back and I can feel the discs shift at times and it causes me a lot of pain. I don’t want to go through surgery because that is expensive and it’s going to cause me to be out of commission for a while. So I’ve been doing a lot of physical therapy exercises with stretches. Plus I make sure that I don’t carry a lot of extra weight. That is not going to be great for my back either. Plus I need to make sure I have a firm mattress. Doing these preventive measures can prevent bigger problems when I’m in my 60s and 70s. I just can’t look over the next five years, I have to look at the long term effects of my actions today.
Now, many people just deal with small inconveniences like knee, hip, or back pain. The pain is not great enough to throw us off our game but it’s something that we notice. When this pain is happening, we should address it as fast as possible. The same concept applies to our careers and relationships. If someone at work is causing your problems, don’t deal with it, handle it. It’s going to prevent bigger problems down the road. When it comes to relationships, if you’re going to pass judgment, then fix the problem when it’s small before it turns into something bigger.
Smaller problems are better and more enjoyable to fix than a bigger problem. The key thing is that it’s still a problem and it can be uncomfortable to face. Just like the nagging injury. But an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A small problem can be addressed in five to 30 minutes. A bigger problem can take weeks or months to fix. Going through a divorce can take years, and if you can address problems when they are small that can save a lot of headaches.
So in your life, look for the preventative measures that you can take with your physical health, mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health. This will then help you out with your relationships, your finances, and your career. It’s going to require more effort, time, and courage to do, but it will lead to a great life because of hard choices, easy life, easy choices, hard life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure like Benjamin Franklin said. And if you want to read a great biography, read Benjamin Franklin’s biography. He followed this lesson and was able to do amazing things in his life. And life is about minimizing problems and maximizing great memories. No one is going to give us great memories, we have to go out and make them, but we have to be prepared for them, and we do that by taking preventive measures to reduce risks in life. It’s not always fun to eat well and exercise, but these things will give us a great life down the road. We don’t have all the time and resources in the world, so it’s best to spend that 30 minutes on self-care so it can give you years of living down the road. Instead of enjoying one month today. So make the best choices with your day today and see what activities will maximize your life over your lifetime.

  • The Granny Rule “Eat Your Carrots before You Eat Your Dessert”

In this episode, we discuss how we should do the hard but good for us stuff first before we reward ourselves with the bad stuff for us in overabundance.

In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should do the hard but good for us stuff first before we reward ourselves with the stuff that is bad for us in overabundance. Charlie Munger said we should follow the Granny Rule: “Eat your carrots before you eat your dessert.” This is a great rule to follow. If you start with the dessert first, what typically happens is that we will eat more than we should of that dessert, and we probably not going to touch the vegetables.
Now if we do this for a long period of time, then it’s not going to be good for us. It’s best to eat the carrots first, then wait a little bit longer so our stomach and brain and see how much we ate, before we indulge in the dessert. It takes about fifteen minutes for the brain to realize how full it is. This is why chewing your food 20 to 30 times before swallowing is a great strategy plus it’s better for your stomach.
Now this applies to our personal lives and our career as well. Before sitting on the couch to watch television, ask yourself if you exercised first or did your reading beforehand. Before you go to that happy hour with your co-workers, did you make your phone calls, and did you work on the project like you said you were?
If we neglect these carrot activities, how is our future going to look? It’s not going to look pretty. This is why we should learn to love the carrots first and no expose ourselves to the desert too much in the first place. Every morning I like to read for 60 minutes. Then I like to write in my journal and write a podcast episode, then I record my Facebook Live at 9 am, then I exercise and eat breakfast.
This way, I did all my self-care stuff for the day, and I can have a clear conscience. I work for myself and have the luxury to take this amount of time in the morning. But I also tell myself that I need to do the hard stuff for my business first like doing client meetings, doing videos, and working on my course.
Doing these hard tasks over a long period of time allows me to eventually like doing them. So then I actually start to prefer eating my carrots.
In the Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss, he talks about people following the slow-carb diet to lose weight where people eat a high protein diet that basically is a protein like chicken, beef, or pork, and supplemented by beans and vegetables. You’re not allowed to eat anything white like potatoes, rice, and bread, and you get one cheat meal a day. If you follow this routine, you might gorge out on cheat day, but you’re going to feel sick.
I remember finishing boot camp and I ate a lot of skittles and dessert, and I felt sick afterward because I was not used to eating these things for three months. So once you’ve used to being healthy, being unhealthy will be not so fun. This is why I don’t like all-inclusive resorts because I just feel awful afterward. But this feeling will go away and it will be a temptation to do it again and we can easily slip back into a dessert first mentality.
To establish rules for eating your carrots first and delaying the dessert so that it actually feels like a treat and not something we feel entitled to. Do this and you will have more control and flexibility over your life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, follow the granny rule, where you eat your carrots before you eat your dessert. Life is filled with temptations and it’s really easy in this new environment to want to eat your dessert first, but once you take a lick from the lollipop of mediocrity, you’ll suck forever. I don’t want to suck forever and I don’t want the same thing for you. To establish rules for eating your carrots. I tell myself that I won’t do anything else until I finish my morning routine first. Then I can do other things. This helps me do what I need to do and stay healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Do this and life will feel amazing. And remember, just focus on getting one percent better every day, and eventually, you’ll reach your goal.
