Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the need to handle uncertainty. In life, when you’re trying to do something new like starting a business, remodel a home, go for a new career, build a community, and just basically outside your comfort zone, there is going to be uncertainty.
When it comes to uncertainty, it can either make you stronger as a person or it can break you down. If you want to take your life to the next level though, you have to be okay with uncertainty. I heard on the Joe Rogan Podcast where he saw a meme that said that 97% of people work for the 3% of the people that didn’t quit.
When I heard this, I was like yup that is true. It is not going to be easy to stick with something for a long time and suck at it in the first place. It can take 10 years to become an overnight success and you just have to embrace the uncertainty of making to the success you want in life.
It all depends on what you want out of life and how much uncertainty you want to take on. You don’t have to start a big business to have everything you want but if you want more in life, you’re going to have to be more as a person.
Right now, I spend a lot of time on my Grow With Joe Business because one it will give me the life that I want and two it will create the type of positive change I want to see in the world with Latinos and their money and self-development.
I basically quit my last firm to start my own financial planning company and I’m starting from zero. There has been a lot of uncertainty for me but I just remember my why and it gives me the strength to keep going. Plus I feel since I work really hard on my inner circle, then that helps me out greatly.
If I’m feeling stressed out, I go for a walk or do a workout. Another thing I do is read a book about someone else who has struggled with their business, and it gives me the strength to keep going. I read the Phil Knight biography last year and it was a great book about he started Nike. He had some help from his connections but he also almost went bankrupt a couple of times while he was growing the business.
He also took some calculated risks that paid off greatly. There are other stories like this that remind me that I just need to keep going. If I keep going, then eventually I get to where I need to go but I need to handle the uncertainty of everything.
What has helped start this new business is that I’ve been doing it for the past four years. With my last firm, I was an independent contractor. I had to go generate my own business to earn a living. I did get a lot of help from my previous on how to be a financial advisor, but I would say a majority of it came from just grinding it out and trying to see as many clients as possible.
There came a point where I wasn’t really enjoying my time at the firm because I didn’t agree with what was going on and then came a point where I was able to convince four people to pay me a $6,000 for planning fees. Since it was with my old company, they received 40% and I got 60%.
But right after that happened, I found out about the XY Financial Planning network and they focused on fee-for-service financial planning. At my last firm, I was a broker-dealer and registered investment advisor, and I really wanted to get away from being a broker-dealer, so I’m so glad that I heard about XY Financial Planning.
If I went with them, I would start back at zero because I couldn’t take my clients with me but I was starting with experience now. Plus my fees and expenses are a lot lower now than with my previous firm so I embraced the uncertainty to start my own thing.
Plus I want to be a digital nomad for a couple of years in Latin America so I can learn Spanish and this is not possible with my old firm. So by having the confidence and understanding what I want out of life, I can handle the uncertainty of starting a new business. It’s a calculated risk. I’m not married and I don’t have kids so I’m fine for now and take on these types of risks.
If you’re not trying to start a business, then there is going to be uncertainty in other parts of your life like with your health, your relationships, and your finances. The key thing is that you need to build up your inner circle so that you can be attacked but not capture by uncertainty.
I was sick a couple of weeks ago and it prevented me from working. I just embraced it and said this is supposed to happen, and this is what I’m going to get through it. I tell myself this affirmation to help get past the uncertainty and it’s “No matter how hard it is, or how hard it will be, I will get through it.” Tough times are here but they are not meant to stay here forever. Just remember that when you’re going through a tough moment in time. This can make you stronger as a person down the road because it will give you a perspective on life that you didn’t have before. I’m grateful for all the tough things that I went through in the past because they made me into the man I am today.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, we have to learn to embrace uncertainty. There can be a lot of opportunities in handling uncertainty, what could have been your worst moment at the moment, could be the best thing that happened to you in the long run. A person who gets fired from there job, but then get the kick in the butt to actually follow their dreams. The key thing is they embraced the uncertainty and pushed through it. We have to do the same thing with our goals because if we don’t, we won’t be living up to our full potential and we’ll just live an unfulfilling life.
