In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the three types of people in this world. There are the people that make things happen, there are the people that watch things happen, and there are the people that wondered what happened. The key thing is that you want to be a person that makes things happen and avoid being the other two types of people. You definitely don’t want to be the person that wonders what happens because then you’re going to in a lot of trouble. The world is constantly changing and if all we do is focus on what is happening around us, then we are going to miss the change that is going to turn our world upside down.
Computers are constantly changing the world that we live in. It makes the old tedious jobs done automatically by machine and jobs that were done by those people are disappearing. For me, I’m not going to wait for someone else to come save me, I’m going to figure out what I need to do on a daily basis so I never have to say, “How did this all happen?”
I feel the best way to prevent this is by taking action to build up the three assets that you have in your life. Your financial capital, social capital, and human capital. If you constantly take action on building up these three assets, then you’ll have a more solid foundation than if you didn’t.
The easy choice in life is to either watch things happen and wonder has happened because they require you just sit on the sideline. But sometimes you want to be the person watch things happen, especially if the thing is brand new. I remember getting a sega Dreamcast when I was a kid instead of a PS2 or Xbox and if you know about the Sega Dreamcast, it didn’t last very long. It had some very good games and I enjoyed the controller but everyone was jumping on the ship of the PS2 and Xbox and the Dreamcast stopped making games. Then I had to sell my Dreamcast as a loss and I eventually got a PS2. Sometimes you have to make those leaps and sometimes you have to wait. If you make a leap instead of waiting, you just have to make sure that you’re okay with spending that time and money on that thing. I got a lot of use out of my Sega Dreamcast and it wasn’t a complete loss but it was still a loss.
So it’s okay to watch things happen, you just have to make sure you’re not watching longer than you have to. It can be a big risk to be the first one to market with a brand new concept. If you look at social media, the first one was Friendster and myspace but now those platforms don’t really exist anymore. Sometimes if you’re the first to go through, you reek all the rewards by getting a majority of the customer share first like with Apple and the Smartphone. In business, when you take on risk, you want to make sure you’re properly compensated for that risk if things work out for you. So you have to take a calculated risk from time to time to be a person who makes things happen. If things don’t work out though, you can also just focus on the next thing. Just make sure sure you have the social and human capital to make sure you can move on to the next thing quickly.
Most of the time to be a person who makes things happen, it just requires constant action by doing the little things that will add up over time. For me, my goal is to read at least 20 pages every day and I usually do this in 25 minutes while I ride a stationary bike. Then I have books on my kindle app on my phone that I read in downtime like waiting for an appointment or using public transportation. By taking this action every single day, I’m gaining new ideas for my Grow With Joe Business which then I can use those strategies to help me with my clients.
There are other things that I need to take action to make sure I’m reaching my goals. I know that I wait for the thing to come to me, they never will. If I do wait for things to happen to me, I’ll fall into the category of wonder what happens and I can’t accept that. To be a person of action is really hard and it’s a grind. To do great things in this world though requires us to do uncommon things and most people in this world are just being passive about their life. To help me take action, I just say “Hard choices, easy life; easy choices, hard life” and this usually push me to make the hard choice that will help me take action with my life.
To make things happen though, it won’t happen overnight, if it does happen overnight, there is a high likelihood that it won’t be sustainable. Also, take ten minutes to plan out your day so you make sure you’re putting the things that will propel your life forward on your calendar so you do it. I know if something is not on my calendar, then I won’t do it. You have to have a system to take action, if you’re leaving your action up to fate, then it’s not going to happen. For my day, I make sure that I have a system in place to get my stuff done and a lot of that is from what I implement in my time management course. Time is short and I’m trying to see what things I can accomplish in this world and that is only going to come from taking action and having a system in place to do it, otherwise life is just going to pass me by and then life is going to dictate what I get and I don’t want that.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, there are three types of people in the world, people who make things happen, people who watch things happen, and people who wonder what happen. A majority of you time you want to be a person who makes things happen but there is also times you need to be a person who watches things happen and you should spend the least amount of time on being a person who wondered what happened. If you let that happen to you, then you have a lot of work ahead of you to get yourself out of that hole. If you take daily action though, the hole will rarely get too deep for you to get out of. So make sure you’re taking positive action that will build up your human capital, social capital, and financial capital, and you’ll be able to handle a lot of what life can throw your way and life a pretty satisfying life as well.
