Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how time and decay move in the same direction what does this mean for you. This is a physics concept but once you apply it to your life, hopefully, it will kick start you to start taking more action with your life. If you look at anything on this planet, it is decaying. The decay might be fast or it might be slow. I rock is going to erode very slowly but flowers in the spring last for about a month before they decay away. Things don’t stay the same forever, they are constantly changing in one way or another.
A great way to slow down the decay process is to constantly put energy into something. If you think about a house, if no energy was put into that house for 30 years, that house in 30 years is going to look like a mess. The yard is going to look like a jungle, it is probably going to overrun by rats and bugs, the roof is probably going to collapse soon, and it’s not going to be worth that much.
But if there was another house where for 30 years energy was put into it, where it was cleaned routinely, the lawn was taken care of, it was remodeled, and the roof replaced, that house is going to look better than it did 30 years ago and it’s going to be more valuable. It much easier to let things go into decay because it requires no effort. To clean a house and remodel it, it requires energy and time.
Now instead of a house, think about yourself. What would happen to your body and your mind if you never put any energy into growing or just maintaining it? It’s probably going to look like a mess as well. But if you put energy into growing your mind and body, you can do great things. This is going to require work though.
It takes time and energy to read books, to create things, and to work out but the bi-product is that you look and feel better afterward. The other path is you’re just dealing with things and your satisfaction is not very high. You probably going to be complaining more and living in a scarcity mindset.
I have a bad back and bad knee, and if I don’t do my physical rehab exercise for a couple of weeks, I start to feel the pain. Picking things off the ground becomes harder and I walk funny. I have to constantly work on my exercises because if I don’t, then comes a point where I throw out my back and I can’t move for a couple of days. I need to put constant energy and time into strengthening the muscles in my back, abs, and around my knee so that I can maintain my daily activities of living.
I don’t know where I would be as a person if I never read or listened to podcasts. I don’t know what I would talk about and I don’t know how I would be making these podcasts if I didn’t put work into growing my mind. I would not be able to come up with creative solutions for the problems I have in my life.
The big reason why put so much time and energy into growing myself is because I want to make sure that I can maintain my daily activities of daily living. I want to be able to move around, I want to make sure I can go to the bathroom, that I can dress myself, and I can have conversations with folks. In High School, I volunteered at a senior citizen center and you can see what happens to people when they don’t put the time or energy into themselves. This didn’t apply to everyone at the senior citizen center but I was able to see enough folks that made realize that I have to do something now as a teenager and that I’m keeping up still in my 30s.
The thing with decay is that it happens very slowly. If you look at your place, if you don’t spend time cleaning it on a routine basis, the dish start to pile up, the trash cans start to fill up, a thin layer of dust starts to accumulate, and after a week of not cleaning, your place starts to look like a mess. Now keep up this routine for a month and now it is going to take a lot of time and energy to clean up your place. It’s best just to do things a little bit at a time over a longer period of time than trying to fix everything at one time. Yes, it is annoying to put dishes straight in the dishwasher instead of just leaving them in the sink but then you won’t have to worry about eating over your sink because you ran out of plates.
When it comes to your body, you see the difference physically probably until a couple of months later but your mindset might be different but it will still feel the same because that is what you’re used to. A good way to figure out if you’re on the right track is to hangout other people that are putting energy into themselves. If you can’t keep up with them, then you know that you need to change something in your life. You might need to eat better, exercise more, or start improving your skills. Whatever you have to do, just don’t get left behind.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, you have to know that time and decay move in the same direction. If you don’t put any energy into growing yourself, then you’ll just start decay faster with time and you can end up like a Detroit House that you can get for $5,000 and nobody wants that house so doesn’t let that happen to you. Put energy into yourself so you develop into something special because the world needs you to.
