Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the quote “Want More, Be More.” I thought I came up with this quote but then I read the Michael Jordan biography called “The Life” and Michael Jordan’s grandparents told him that if he wanted more out of life, he had to be more as a person. This is exactly what the quote means. If you want to have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances you have to be the type of person that deserves those things.
Having a great career, relationships, and personal finances are rarely just going to happen. You have to work to make them happen and work on yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and it’s going to take time. Even if you get into a great relationship right away, it probably will only last a couple of months before trouble starts to kick in. There will be some type of conflict that is going to put a strain on the relationship and if the person is not strong to handle that strain, then the relationship is going deteriorate.
I don’t expect anything to come my way, I expect that I have to work for everything I get. I might get a freebie here and there but I shouldn’t expect those freebies. At work, I could have a lucky streak and get a lot of clients but if I want to get better, I can’t get too happy about the outcomes that are it distracting me from following the process. If I want more of that feeling, then I have to continue to get better as a person.
Once you give up the feeling of being entitled to stuff, then you can start taking ownership of the process. Whatever you want in life, you have to go out and get it. If you want to be the CEO of a company, then you have to do what CEOs do. If you want to be able to spend a lot of money on stuff, then you need the type of person that can have that lifestyle. It’s a lot of work to be that type of person, but it can be very rewarding.
If you want to be the best basketball player in the world, then you have to be a better basketball player than everyone else in the world and no one is just going to let someone be the best basketball player in the world, it has to be earned. Practice more, study more, workout more, and be mentally strong enough to handle the pressure. If you look at someone like Steph Curry, it is not the most athletically gift player on the court but he is the most skilled. He changed the game of basketball with his shooting, and since he couldn’t be more physical as a basketball player, he became more skilled as a shooter and dribbler. So if one path is working out for you, you might have to consider another path to get what you want in this world.
To have more money, there are many different ways to earn it and each one has there own sacrifices. I choose the business owner route. You could choose to work for someone else, you could do a franchise model, you could be the best in your sport, and there are other ways to make money but one might fit your personality more than others. Another way to have more money is just to reduce your need to have stuff. If you don’t need that much, then why do you have to accumulate all this money? It all depends on what you want in life but you could be more comfortable with not keeping up with the Jones. This is going to require you not to be bothered by other people’s standard so you need to be stronger mentally and emotionally so that people don’t get under your skin and causes you to change your values.
There are plenty of ways to live your life but if you want more of something, then you have to better as a person in one way or another and this is going to require sacrifices. If you want to spend more time with family then you either have to have a low standard of living in a cheap place, have an inheritance, win the lottery, or have a job that pays you a lot of money but also gives you a lot of free time. Once I found out that to make a million dollars, all you need to do is sell something that is $500 to 2000 people, it changed my mind about trading your time for money. If you think about it, that is a lot of people to get to buy from you in this world but there are other things that go into it but there is a path. You just need to be more as a person in order to reach the end of the path.
The world will never be an equal place because people start from all different starting points and if everything was equal, people would find some way to distinguish themselves from the pack. If you’re trying to get into a relationship, what you’re trying to do is convince the person your after that you’re different from all the other people and that you’re perfect for that person. Plus you want some inequality in the system for better diversification. You want people to be better at different things so that we can create better solutions for problems out in the world. When it comes to equality on a global scale, it is very complicated, but when it comes to you as an individual, things become more simple.
Which do you think is going to happen first, the world is going to change so that you can have a better life or that you can change yourself for a better life. I would bet on the individual. Yeah, we all get some lucky breaks but with the internet and access to information, it makes things much easier than ever before but there is also more distraction ever than before. I don’t think you need a degree to show that you’re worth something, and can bypass this by building up a portfolio of your work to show what you have done. You just need to build up your portfolio and that will come from putting in the work.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, if you want more, be more. I have these phrases on my collar stays and it reminds me that I need to continue to improve as a person. The world needs to be our best selves if we want it to prosper and if you want a better life in general, then you have to work on yourself in all areas with the four cornerstones. I’ve been working on myself for the past five years and I’m getting more from life than I would have ever imagined. Are you getting what you want from life?
