In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how success is never owned, it is rented, and the rent is due every day. It is really easy to take it easy after you’ve been successful. I’ve been watching the Nationals play in this year’s playoffs and they have been on a tear. The year I leave DC, they want to start doing in the playoffs. If you’ve followed the Washington Nationals for the past 8 years, they’ve been a really good time, sometimes being in the first place, but always lost in the division series. I think this year, they finally learned from the past and are acting so calm. As I’m recording this, they still have a while to go, but the nationals are acting like success is rented, not owned.
In interviews, they are being calm and saying the right things to not let their egos get in the way. They are just doing the things they need to do to stay successful, especially the pitching staff. If you’re on top, you don’t want to take it easy because that is when your competition starts to catch up. For me, I had a really good week last week at work, and I kind of eased up on work. I didn’t work a full day and I decided to do some other things that I thought were important but really weren’t. Now I’m looking at my calendar and it looks pretty empty. So now I have to spend some time generating business again.
I’ve been here before and it’s not very fun but it’s something I have to deal with now. I think what I need to start doing is following my numbers. I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts and they’ve recently been saying that you need to follow your numbers. How many phone calls did I make? how many clients do I have? What is my revenue? What are my expenses? How many appointments do I have scheduled?
So this week, I’m going to spend some time to go over my numbers. It’s really easy to let life dictate what you should do but we need to take control over our schedule. I did go to an Oregon Ducks game last week that kind of caused me to be lazy for three days. It was my first ducks game and it was amazing and I just have to be okay with that time spent. I didn’t realize that all the partying would take me a couple of days to recover. It’s cool, though because I’m back on my grind. I just need to focus on getting back to work.
I guess I was also feeling good because I had a really good two weeks before that I guess I just coasted. Now a week after, I’m like okay, I need to get back to work. I’m fine though but I could be better. To help me get better, I’m going to get back to time blocking my day and generating a metric table so I can view my numbers. I feel that I do better when I know what my day is going to look like. I know activities I’m going to work on and my metrics table will tell me which activities I should put on my calendar.
I guess I should also write on my whiteboard, that success is never owned, it’s rented and the rent is due every day. It’s good to have reminders to let you know if you’re on track or not. I guess that is why people wear bracelets with messages on them so people can be reminded of what they should be doing. So whatever you need to remind yourself what needs to be done, get it in your line of vision as quickly as possible. I also think it is important to change the message because, after a while, you just become numb to the message. So if you’re noticing your reminder isn’t working anymore, try switching it up or putting it in a new place.
I already know what needs to be done for success. I just have to do it. If you don’t know what needs to be done for success, it’s probably the boring work that needs to be done. At my last job, I knew I had to make 20 phone calls a day to schedule appointments and some days I didn’t get any appointments, but if you do it consistently enough, then the success will come. That is basically what I need to do. Is to start contacting people. I fell off this two months ago because I got sick and then I traveled to Chicago to visit my sister. Then I got sick again when I got back home. I’m finally feeling better again and I’m just going to get back at it. I’m also starting my MBA right now so I know I have to be more efficient with my time.
As I said, it’s easy to coast. You can take a job and just be okay. You earn a paycheck and you have a nice steady routine. Then comes a year later and you’re still in the same position but maybe you gain a couple of extra pounds and you start to get winded when you challenge yourself. This comes so slowly that you really can’t notice things until a year later or maybe even two years later. This is why you need to have a metric board of some sort that tells you if you’re progressing or regressing. I noticed I’ve gained some weight over the past couple of months and I want to get back on a training routine that starts shedding the pounds, and thanks to the scale, I know that I’m going in the wrong direction.
Also, have a friend or accountability partner to let you know that you need to start paying your rent again. Whatever you need to do to start paying rent again, do it because you don’t want to get to a month where you can’t afford your rent anymore. That moment might come next month or ten years from now. So just ask yourself, are you doing the things you need to do to make sure you have a successful future? If not, what steps can you take now to get there?
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, success is never owned, it’s rented, and the rent is due every day. If you think of your own success, there will come a day where you won’t be successful anymore. Treat every day like a gift but also make sure you’re challenging yourself a little more than the previous day. If you just get one percent better than the previous day, then you’re doing what is necessary for a successful future. It takes work but it will be worth it in the end.
