Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how life is a game of numbers. I got this concept from Nick Murray who is a financial advisor that wrote a bunch of different books to help out other financial advisors and one of his most famous books is “The Game Of Numbers.” In this book, he talks about how you just have to keep trying and trying until you get to the place you want to be at. In the book, Nick Murray says to become a successful financial advisor, you need to reach out to 60,000 people.
That’s a lot of people to contact but if you contact 50 people a day, it will take you about four years to get to a place where you want to be. I reach out to about 20 people a day, and some of that is people in my contact and some of those people are other folks that I see online that I want to establish a connection with. Maybe get on there blog or podcast or we can do a Facebook Live together.
I know the more people I reach out to the more I opportunities I will get. The more podcast episodes I make, I increase the likelihood that one more person will connect with me. I can’t believe I’ve done 168 episodes so far and that is a lot of work. I do this work because I read Nick Murray’s book and this is something Gary V and other business owners preach. Business is a contact sport and the more contacts you make, the opportunities you will have to get lucky.
It’s like that old quote, the hard I work, the luckier I seem to get. You have to realize there is some luck involved with life. Someone might get lucky on their first try and be set for life but those are the outliers. For everybody else, including myself, I have to take many swings of the bat to get me to reach my goals.
Also the more repetition you do of something, the easier it will get. You have to remember the 10,000-hour rule, which means that you have to put 10,000 hours into something to become a master. If you stop at hour one, then you’ll just stay an amateur and get amateurs to get. I used to suck at writing in the past but after writing out 168 episodes, my writing has improved and it’s a lot easier to do. I used to also suck at giving public speeches but also practiced a lot to get better.
Back in the 300 BC period, there was a guy named Demosthenes, and he spoke with a stutter, but wanted to be a lawyer in Greece. To help get over his stutter, he practiced with pebbles in his mouth until he overcame his stutter. I’m sure he practices all the time as well and he became one of the most sought after orators in the country. I guess the thing that helped Demosthenes out was that he believed he could get better with practice. He had a growth mindset. He didn’t live with a fixed mindset that told him whatever he was at the moment when he had the stutter, that was going to be his fate for the rest of his life.
I know some people that I talked that don’t believe that can achieve anything more. This is all that they got, so why try to get better. I tell people all the time to reach out to people because it can open up opportunities for themselves but I know they rarely do it. Or they will immediately start saying that they can’t do it or that they’ve tried in the past. If something is not working, then try something else. I know with my digital marketing, I constantly have to test things out. If something is not working after a little while, then I go out to search for another answer either from a resource like a book or from an actual person. With your game of numbers, if I were to reach out to the same person 60,000 times, I would be out of business real quick.
I have to go out and test different things. Once I found the thing to help me get more clients, I know eventually, it will stop work and I will need to find something else. This is a big reason why I need to constantly work on my skills so that I know more ways of reaching my 60,000 thresholds for success.
When you’re going towards your number and that number might be less than 60,000 or more, you just have to enjoy the process. I read one story of a person who worked at a bank and their goal was to make like 100 phone calls a day. So he would start his day with two jars on his desk next to the phone. One jar was empty and the other had 100 paperclips in it. And every time he made a phone call, he would transition one paperclip from the full jar to the empty one. And he would just follow this process until all the paperclips were moved to the other jar. I’m sure that person had some good days and some bad weeks, but he just stuck with the process until he reached the success he wanted.
He enjoyed the process and made a game of it. How can I move all these paperclips to the other side? He might have said also that if I can move all the paperclips over, that will provide me with 200 dollars at the end of the month. So make a game of whatever you’re trying to do. I just tell myself that doing a podcast every Monday through Friday will give me at least one client a month and it’s worked so far. I just need to keep it up until I reach 50 clients, but I’ll probably keep doing this afterward because I enjoy it and I know this podcast can provide other opportunities. If success takes me two years or 20 years, I’m ready for it because I know this is what I am supposed to do for the rest of my life.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, life is a game of numbers and you should continue with whatever you’re doing until you reached your goal. Your goal will determine what your number is. So spend some time this week and reflect on what that number is. Like I discussed in my last podcast, you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pocket. To reach my 60,000 folks, I need to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I’m doing that know and sometimes you will have setbacks as I did back in October and November of 2019 when I was sick and transitioning to Mexico. This key this is that I got back to my path as fast as I could and I’m just going to keep going. Just remember you got this, and keep going.
