Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about what your future self is probably saying about yourself. If you’re doing the things today that will give you a brighter future, then it probably is positive, if you’re not doing positive things to give you a positive future, then your future self is probably talking crap about you. Just look at your life today and are you talking positively about the situation you have today or is it negative?
I like to do this exercise where I’m reviewing my life and seeing if I’m moving in the right direction. I ask myself in my journal, how am I feeling about life. By taking this time to reflect on my life for ten minutes, I get a lot of clarity on what I should be doing for myself and to see if I’m letting myself down and the easiest person to let down is yourself if you’re not taking the time for self-awareness.
If I’m starting to talk crap about my present situation, then for the most part, I have no one to blame than myself. Life is about choices and we are the sum of those choices, and I’m making bad choices, then it’s going to turn it a future where I’m talking crap about myself and I don’t want that for myself.
I don’t want to be miserable longer than I have to. One reason why this is so important to me is that mom worked in a job that she didn’t like for a long time and it took a big toll on her health. So if I’m feeling miserable for too long, then I know I have to make a change. I also know that time is a very scarce resource and I don’t want to be older and regret the decisions I’ve made. I have a pretty good idea of what activities I should be doing to get the future that I want. So then I do those activities. I’m making investments with my time so that I have a future that gives me a lot of interest that I can live off of.
If I have the interest to live off, then I can make sure that my future self is not talking crap about me because my future self is not stuck in their situation. And that’s what it comes down to is not feeling stuck with your situation. If you’re not happy with your health in the future, it usually means that you need to wear bigger clothes, you get winded faster-doing activities, and you don’t have a positive image of your body, which then can affect other parts of your life. Then you feel stuck that you can’t change your situation because it will be too much work or you don’t believe that you can change your situation.
They can apply to the relationship you’re in, the financial situation you’re in, the career you’re in, and with your personal health. I try to make every day a day that I don’t feel stuck. To ensure this, I don’t hold on to the things that could hold me back. When it comes to my health, I make sure I allocate time to exercise because I don’t want to be unhealthy in the future and have to buy a whole new wardrobe because my clothes don’t fit. If my clothes don’t fit, I know I’m going to take crap about myself and why I drank and ate so much.
I was overweight as a child and I know what a poor physical condition can put on my mental health. Luckily for me, I had a growth spurt and lost a lot of the weight in the eighth grade and just made it a habit to workout ever since. Since I know what feeling stuck actually feels like, it gives me more motivation to take care of myself today. I never want to go back to that weight again and I feel so much better now in all parts of my life.
There are times where I go on a vacation and come back with my pants feeling a little tighter, and that’s just a signal for me that I need to take it easy and get back to my healthy habits. I’m not a perfect person when it comes to taking care of my body but the thing I do is that I try not to make the same mistake for a long time. I can spend a week to indulge while I’m on vacation but a month is something that I’m not okay with. If I spend a month, then I know I’m going to be talking crap about the decisions I’ve made over the last month.
It’s really easy to fall into this trap and having the self-awareness that you’re slipping is going to be crucial. You don’t have to weigh yourself every day, but maybe once every two weeks just to make sure that you’re aware of what direction you’re going it.
I constantly read, write, go to the gym, and do other things to make sure I’m going in the right direction. I also tell myself, “Hard Choices, easy life; easy choices, hard life.” If I’m talking crap about my past self, it’s usually because I made the easy choice. Now I’m paying for it with my present self. I know I have no one to blame than myself if I’m not happy with what I have today. I just assume that if I want to have a good day, I have to go out and get that good day. Life is too short to be miserable and every day that goes by in where you’re talking crap about your present situation is a day you won’t get back.
There can be setbacks in life that cause you to have bad days, but you don’t need to stay there. The key thing is that you start taking some form of positive action that will get you to a future that is great. Life is good when you do it right and create your own luck.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, what is your future self saying about yourself? Is it good or is it bad? If you reflect on today, you will probably get an idea of which direction your future is heading in and there is time to change that future if you take the right action steps. If that day comes and you don’t like it, there is a high probability that you took the easy choices this week. If you want that life, go be it, just be aware that you have control over your future and how it turns out. Just try to make sure your future self isn’t talking crap about yourself and you should be fine.
