In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the difference between successful people and really successful people, and the difference is that really successful people say “no” to almost everything as Warren Buffett says. The reason that this is true is that we don’t have all the time in the day. Everyone is living with the same 24 hours in their day and it’s up to them how they want to spend it.
You can spend your day creating or consuming. If you can figure out how to create a lot of value in a short amount of time, then that can give you more time for spending with friends, family, and your hobbies. This is why we need to learn how to say no to the unimportant that is keeping us from being ultra-successful.
And you’re going to have to say to No to a lot of things. A lot of the requests that you’re going to get for your time is not going to be that valuable. You can spend one hour on something that will provide you $25 for that hour, or you can spend one hour on something that will provide you $1000 for that hour.
There are a lot more opportunities to make $25 an hour than there are for a $1000 and that’s why you have to be good at saying No. For me, I have to start saying No to a certain request. Right now, I’m trying to be really focused on my financial planning business and it requires me to say No to my family at times.
An hour I spend with my family is an hour that I can’t work on my business but the idea is that once I get everything up and running, that can provide me even more time with my family in the future and to help them out even more if there is an emergency.
Also, while I’m running my business, I have to say No to a lot of things. As a financial planner, I get a lot of requests to look at different investments and technology, and I have to say No to a lot of them because I don’t have the time. I know what works for my clients and I don’t have time to look at that stuff yet and my clients don’t need to know how to invest in REITs at their stage of financial planning.
So you have to look at your day and see how much you value your time. The more you value your time, the more things you have to say No to. To know how much your time is worth, you just have to ask yourself, what type of life do you want to have.
How much money do you want to make and what lifestyle do you want to have. You could want to make $100,000 a year, but you would need to find a job or create a business that pays $50/hr for the 2000 hours you’re going to put in at work for the year.
If you want to make a million dollars, then you need to figure out how to make $500 per hour. You have to decide what standard of living you want to have. There are people with businesses who make that $500 per hour, but their business is generating $2000 per hour and part of that $2000 pays for equipment and staff.
So then you have to be good at managing things and making sure things get done, which is more stressful than working for someone else and they pay you a salary. It’s all relative. You don’t have to make a million dollars to be happy. You can be perfectly happy making $50,000 a year and the standard of living that provides.
If you want the million dollars though, you have to be good at saying No to the unimportant that is going to generate $50 per hour. You need to focus on the stuff that makes you $500 per hour. This also is dependent on your responsibilities but there are opportunities to make more if you prioritize your time right. It might take a couple of years to make it happen, but you just have to believe in the process.
I’m looking at my day and I see that I need to spend more time on things that will generate more revenue for the time I’m spending. This is why once I get to a certain number of clients, I’m going to hire a virtual assistant. I’m also living in Mexico for the time being and the cost of living here is so cheap compared to the United States so my dollars go farther and I’m not really sacrificing my standard of living. Plus I’m learning Spanish at the same time which should help me out even farther in the future.
There are also a lot of distractions like television, your smartphone, and social media that keep from focusing on their successful life. It’s okay to relax but don’t overdo it. I find going on walks and listening to podcasts or music to be very relaxing plus I’m getting in some exercise to help my body release the stress hormones that affect my performance.
You can also chase money and it can not be worth it either. I remember living in DC and talking to some lawyers who worked 100 hour weeks but make six figures and I did not envy their lifestyle. I rather work fewer hours and get paid less than to give my life up like that. So you might need to say no to those types of deals to be ultra-successful.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, the difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything. You have to design your life and see what are the things you need to say yes to and what are the many more things you need to say no to. We only have so much time in our day and we need to make sure we’re spending it on the things that we really want to spend our time on. There is nothing worse than succeeding in the chain where you’re getting a lot of stuff but you don’t have the freedom to choose what you actually want to do. As people, we create an imaginary prison that keeps us distracted and frustrated by life, and by using No, you can tear down those walls and live a life that is fulfilled with meaning and purpose.
