Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how as people we need to learn how to turn shit into sugar. Today’s lesson comes from the book, the 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene, where 50 Cent talked about the need to turn horrible situations into golden opportunities. 50 cent was raised in Jamaica Queens during the height of the crack epidemic and was able to turn his horrible situation into making lyrics for his albums. He was raised by his grandmother and had no parents for guidance and had the streets raised him.
He was able to turn his situation around by taking all the shitty things that happened to him and profit off of it. Your situation doesn’t have to be the same, but you need to learn how to take a crappy situation and turn them into opportunities. Nothing is going to go 100% your way and you’re not always going to have it easy.
I was recent to this new podcast series called Business Wars and I love it because it talks about how two competitors have shitty moments that they have to overcome and they benefit from it or they don’t. I was just listening to the series about Facebook and Snapchat and how Facebook was constantly copying whatever Snapchat was doing. Facebook tried to come out with their own apps like Slingshot which looked a lot like Snapchat but failed miserably and caused more people to go to Snapchat. But Facebook kept changing things within Instagram, Facebook, and Facebook Messenger to keep Snapchat on its toes.
It was a crappy moment for Snapchat but had to constantly had to innovate in order to keep ahead of Facebook and consumers of both platforms benefited from new integrations and features. Snapchat went from being nothing to a company worth 21 billion dollars as of Nov 2019. It was because competition against Facebook pushed them to do more. It sucks to have all your ideas from a giant corporation but you can use that to your advantage like Snapchat did to create new things and take advantage of the situation. This story is still being played out and we’ll see in the future who will come out on top.
For me, I didn’t have it as bad a 50 Cent and a lot of other people, but I did grow up in a mobile home with two blue-collar workers and I noticed that my parents didn’t have everything that other kids had. I love my parents for how they raised me and I don’t blame them for anything. I think my background is what causes me to have so much energy toward creating my own thing. I knew I wanted a future with more financial security and I want to help others with opportunities that will get funded through my Grow With Joe Business.
If I had everything as a child, would I still have the same drive to do the things I’m doing now? I don’t think so, and I’m happy about the history that I have. If someone was to ask me if I could change anything from my past, I wouldn’t, because those moments made me the person I am today. I was also overweight as a child and I take physical fitness seriously now in my 30s because I know what a poor physical condition can put on my mental and emotional health.
I got divorced two years ago after being in a nine-year relationship and now I created my financial planning company and living in Mexico learning Spanish. I don’t know that I would have done both if I was still married. It was very painful for me to get divorced at first but then I asked myself, how can I take this situation to improve my life. I love what I’m doing right now with my life and business and I feel like I can create something very special in the future.
Whatever you’re going through right now, you can use it to create something better with your future and that your mess can be your message that you spread to other people so they can better connect with you. No one wants to root for the person that had a perfect life, we want to see that the person is human and sharing your crappy moments in a constructive way can help you do that.
Plus when you go through a crappy situation, any other crappy situation that you go through might not seem that bad and you can also gain valuable experience that can be used leverage to take advantage of a new opportunity. You’ll be able to handle it because you have experience now. It sucked working at my last firm because it was so stressful and I lost a lot of money but I did gain a lot of valuable experience that I’m using now with Grow With Joe. Now I have the confidence to do my own thing and I working on getting my sweet life.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, we need to learn how to turn shit into sugar. This is a very valuable skill to have. When everyone is panicking, you can stay calm and take advantage of the situation. I love listening to stories about how turning shit into sugar because it makes me realize that other people are going tough stuff as well and that we’re not alone in our struggles. So listen to a podcast like Business Wars so you can gain some inspiration for your life. When a crappy situation comes your way, you can do two things. You can either do nothing and stay in the shit or you can take some type of action that turns your life around. It might take a while but do you really want to eat shit forever?
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is a crappy situation that you’re dealing with right now? And how can you take some type of action to turn it into sugar? Do you need to learn a new skill? Do you need to cut something out of your life? Do you need to read a book to help you get the right idea? Crappy situations are not permanent, they’re like storms that will pass if you do the right things. To reflect on what you need to do and then make it happen!
