Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the Issac Newton Quote, “If I have seen further, it is only by standing on the shoulder of giants.” As people, we can’t do everything, and we need other people to help us advance further in life. These other people can be people in our life and they can be people we read about.
Issac Newton got his foundation from others who pioneered in science before him. He was about to leverage that knowledge to then create new breakthroughs in science. This what we need to do as well for our own personal lives. We don’t start off with all the answers and we need to use others to help us out.
When I first got into my personal development journey, I listened to a lot of Jim Rohn and Les Brown, to help motivate me in the right direction. Then I used Ryan Holiday and Robert Greene to give me a new way to think.
Now I’m constantly listening to podcasts and reading books so that I can know what the giants know. This then helps me create new creative courses and helps me give my clients better solutions for their problems. I am going to be the first one to admit that I’m not the original source for a lot of things in the podcast, but what I trying to do is make it easy for people to consume these valuable lessons on how to live life.
Right now I’m reading a lot of philosophy books from 2000 years ago and these books can be very boring to read at times but at other times, I’m amazed the insightful things that a particular philosophy said. And I am so glad that I spent five hours reading a book to learn this one thing that will change my life. Then I just write a blog or podcast about that lesson so that I make sure that I learn the lesson. I have ideas for a podcast for the next two years and I’m just going to keep getting more.
If I didn’t have these giants to help me out, I don’t know where I would be. Most likely though I would be working at a job that I hate because I wouldn’t know any better. That’s why you need to stand on the shoulder of giants because you can see where you need to go with your life and you can leverage the giant’s skills to help you get there.
If I’m ever feeling like I’m in trouble, I go out and seek a giant and see what they are doing. Then I get on their shoulders to see what my next move should be. To start my own financial planning company, I used the XY Financial Planning Network to help me out. I used their compliance team and their resources to help me get started. I don’t think I could have done my own thing if I was to go out on my own. I wouldn’t have to know where to go because reading things online can be confusing and not give you all the information you need to make a sound decision.
One hour with a professional can save an amateur 8 hours. As people, we have to decide if we have the time to learn on our own and if we need to hire an expert to help us out. Sometimes it just requires us to buy at $15 dollar book or if the book is old enough, you can buy it even cheaper. But you have to realize that a book gives general information on how to move in the right direction and doesn’t give you a detailed plan, which might be good enough.
Sometimes you need to hire the professional though. It just depends on where you want to go. For me personally, I read the books, I watch the YouTube Videos, and listen to the podcasts before I buy any course or coaching services. I feel like I’m pretty good at implementing the information from these sources and that is still standing on the shoulders of giants.
As I move forward with my life, I am going to need to seek out giants to help me reach my ambitious goals. I don’t have time to research everything from scratch. I want to go where the best information is for me and then learn how to do better. If you want to learn how to do better with your life, go out and seek a giant and then stand on their shoulders. If you do this, then you should have an easier time in life.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it if I have seen further, it is only by standing on the shoulder of giants like Issac Newton said. If you want to get better at your job, have a better relationship, or have better personal finances, go seek out a giant in that area and stand on their shoulders. Otherwise, you won’t see what direction you need to go in. You might go 50 miles in the wrong direction if you have no giant, and do you really want to walk back 50 miles and walk another 50 miles to your destination. Probably not. Don’t be too proud to ask for help and make sure that you thank the giant that helped you out.
So in your journal, write down an area that you would like to improve in. Or write down a problem that you’re having and who is a master in solving problems in that area. Then spend five minutes to find a podcast, book or YouTube video that helps you out in that area. Then write down what is the first step that you should take after ingesting that information. Once you find out that your life gets better from standing on the shoulder of giants, you’re just going to keep wanting to do it, but you can overdo it. One to three resources on a subject should be enough, but after that maybe you just need to hire a professional to work with you one-on-one. Remember, that I can be a resource to help you as well.
