Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how good things happen to those that hustle. If I had to choose between people. One with a lot of skills but is lazy and another person without skills but is a hustler, I will choose the hustler every day. It will be too much work to keep an eye on the person that is lazy. I would have to constantly keep track of that person and this would cause me not to focus on my own work. Plus the person that hustle will do the extra work that will provide more opportunities.
I used to play a lot of basketball and a person that hustled was always appreciated. They defended on the fast break, they ran back on defense, they went for loose balls and a bunch of other things that help you win games. If you hustle, you might not win on every play, but you increase the likelihood of you winning the game. To give effort, it really is a mindset that says that you will go after opportunities even if there is a highly unlikely chance you will succeed. You might have a 10% chance, but if that 10% chance lands, then you get the points. And if you accumulate enough points, you will win your game.
Depending on your ambition and desires, you will determine how many points you will need to win your game. I know for myself, I need to hustle more than the average person because I’m playing a different game than most since I’m running my own business. Right now I’m trying to acquire clients for my financial planning and digital marketing business. And to help me with my digital marketing business, I create custom videos for prospective clients on what I could do for their business. This requires me to research their company, then to put together a presentation of what I could do for their company. This takes more work than just asking them for their business.
This type of hustle really is helpful though. It gets me in front of more people and the more people I get in front of, the more opportunities for business I have. Then all the good things will happen for me. It’s a mindset thing where you’re focused on your effort and you’re not really concerned about the outcome. If you’re outcome-focused, then you’re really not going to hustle. All you can control is your effort but effort doesn’t always guarantee success, it just increases your likelihood of receiving success.
You might have to do something 50 times, and then on that 51st try, you finally get the big break you were looking for. Just follow the process and good things will happen to you. While 97% of other folks will give up too soon, if you hustle long enough, you can reap all the rewards the other 97% of folks gave up. But remember that you can hustle too hard on the wrong thing. It has to make sense.
For me, I could hustle and try to provide digital marketing for $50 a month to business but that is not enough more for my time and to cover my expenses. It would be better to find one company that pays me $1000/mo and do the same amount of work than to find 200 clients. That would just be awful and I would just burn out. I need to hustle finding folks that can pay for my services and the value I provide. I can’t sell myself short. That will just take time away from my health, family, and friends. And why would I want to give all that up?
There are smart ways to hustle and there are not smart ways to hustle. You will get good things in life if you hustle the smart way. This is why you need to be a constant learner so you know if you’re making the right decisions with your hustling. You already have the passion to hustle, might as well make sure that it’s being put to good use. I remember at my last job, I was trying to take whatever business I could handle, and it just harmed me and my relationships. I learned some valuable things about business development but I also wish I would have done things differently. It would save me from having difficult conversations down the road and would have saved some relationships.
But if you hustle on the right things then you can get that job promotion, land that big client, or get that reward you’ve been looking for. You can’t accept so much certainty in your life, you need to be able to handle uncertainty and hustling decreases the effects of uncertainty. You got to treat your life like fishing in a sense. You want to go where the fish are, but you also want to do all the other things that will help you catch more fish. This might mean waking up before everyone else so you can get to your spot first. It might require you to learn how to catch more fish. Go out and find bait by hand so you can catch more fish. Doing this is hustling and just showing up anytime you like with whatever you have is not hustling. If you take this path of not hustling then you’re just going to receive what is left over by those who did hustle and it’s probably not going to be much. So put in the effort and start hustling, so you can get the life that you want.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, good things happen to those that hustle. This really just requires us to put more effort in than the average person but also to make sure we’re hustling on the right things and not on the things that are going to burn us out. Hustling might feel uncomfortable at first like waking up early, but if you do it enough, it will get easier. So keep it up for 66 days and you should not a difference. After this time frame, you might not be in the place where you want to be, but you’ll be heading in the right direction. Either way, to be in the place where you want to be in life, you need to hustle. So don’t accept a life that you don’t really want and get to work.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is an area that you need to hustle more in? What will this hustling eventually give you? Will hustling in this area actually give you what you want in life? You should be intentional with your life and hustling. You don’t have all the time and energy in the world, so make sure it’s not being wasted and you should be fine in this world.
