Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista.  In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how we need to be patient in the macro but speedy in the micro. When it comes to things like the US economy, how your town is doing, how your career goals, salary goals, and other goals out of your control, just take time to reveal themselves. And you shouldn’t really be focused on these metrics.
As a financial advisor, people always ask me how the markets are doing and for the most part, I don’t really follow them on a day to day basis. I really just care about how much my clients and I are contributing to the market. That is something we can control. We can’t control what type of rate of return we get but we can put our money in a place that is going to give us more growth opportunities.
To get money to put in the market, then I need to focus on my career goals. To get clients or raise overnight rarely happens, it just takes time and work. This is where being speedy matters. The more podcast episodes I release, the more people I contact, the more things I do for my business, will eventually affect the macro but I need to be patient with that.
I can’t believe the amount of work I’ve put into my Grow With Joe Business with three written books, over 230 podcast episodes, and 40 newsletters sent out. I’m also working on Facebook ads to me generate business and doing Facebook and Instagram Lives to get my name out there. I’m just trying to put a lot of content out there and to meet a lot of people so that I get what I want in life.
If you’re trying to lose weight, the more you focus on your diet and workout routine, the more you stick with them, the faster you’ll reach your goals but you won’t lose 100 pounds in a week. You just have to be patient.
The same thing with your career, if you’re not a business owner, just do a lot of quality work to help get you that promotion. Be speedy in the micro. Just make sure you’re doing quality work that people want and not just doing busywork.
Being speedy requires effort and you just need to grind it out in the beginning. Anyone telling you differently is lying to you or trying to sell you something that works work. I’m also trying to consume a lot of information and create a lot of content. I’m trying to get ahead of the macro curve. If there is a change in the market, then I’m going to be ready for it because I’ve put so much work into my craft and body.
I’ve trying to make a business successful for the past five years and I’m just seeing positive results but this is the path that I wanted to take. I did a lot of work in the past that didn’t really amount to anything back then but has given me valuable experience and a unique perspective on how life can be. I choose this path of entrepreneurship because I want control over my life. I don’t want people to tell me where to go when I can go, and what I can do. I want to choose my life. I guess I can blame my Marine Corps experience for wanting this type of life. I hated that my freedom of choice was limited in the Marines and I just wanted to do my own thing.
But to have this type of control where I choose my own schedule and life, I need to be a business owner with high margins. This takes time to build up and is a macro goal. So I just need to work really hard now in the micro on a day to day basis to help me reach my macro goal. I don’t know when I’ll reach my macro goal but I know I’m heading in the right direction. I’m emotionally strong enough to handle this journey because I write in my journal, I read stories of others who struggled, and I meditate. To be patient, you need to be mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually strong. These four cornerstones will give you the stability to help you handle setbacks and when things go wrong, and they will. I would not have the patience to handle this journey if I didn’t work on those four cornerstones. It gives you the right perspective, and with the right perspective, you can take the right actions.
Life is about reaching your macro goals and if you don’t chase your macro goals, then you’re just helping someone else live theirs.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, be patient in the macro but speedy in the micro as Gary V has said. You can’t control the macro but you can control what happens in the micro on a day to day basis. There are a lot of key metrics that you can follow to see if you’re moving in the right direction of your macro goals. Just make sure you’re moving in the right direction and not drifting too far in the wrong direction. To help you stay patient, do the work, and know if you’re moving in the right direction, you need to work on yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. So as part of your daily routine, work on yourself in these four areas and you’ll be ready for your speedy action for the day.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what are the speedy things you can do today and this week, to help you reach your macro goals? It is better to focus on the basics and not get bored with them because they will help you reach your macro goal and to keep them. So make sure you also write down why you want to reach your macro goals. This will help you stick with them when times get tough. And while you work on your stuff this week, just enjoy the process and know that you’re doing what you’re supposed to do in life right now.
