Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we should fake it until we become it. We probably all have heard the saying fake it until you make it but I like them until you become it version better because it’s more helpful.
Imposter syndrome is something that affects a lot of people. I remember hearing about how a majority of college students in Ivy League schools believe they got to that school on a mistake and that they are a phony. After reading a lot of books and just observing adulthood, I realize that a lot of people don’t know what is going on, they are just going with the flow and figuring things out as they come.
I’ve heard singers and presenters on podcasts who say that they still get nervous after being on the stage for 20 years. They just go through something because they know they have to do that thing to become the person they desire to be.
I used to hate doing video work and now it’s a lot easier because I told myself that I was only going to give myself three takes and then I have to put that video out to the world. And by putting out a lot of videos, I got a little bit better with each one and now I’m a lot more comfortable.
I faked it until I became who I wanted to be. Same thing with these podcasts. If you’re an artist or singer, you have to realize that a majority of the songs and paintings that someone creates, don’t become hits. It’s after doing something a lot of times, where you find your best stuff.
I’m still on my journey to get to my destination and I know that I just have to keep exposing myself to these challenging tasks in order to get better. What helps me keep going is hearing stories of others and how they struggled in the beginning and how they just stuck with it until they reached their ultimate goals.
Life requires stamina and having persistence to keep going. You don’t know if it will be the ten-song you write that will become a hit or it will be a thousand songs that you write, but you write 1000 thousand songs and you enjoy it and study your mistakes, then you’ll eventually find your hit song.
Everyone pretty much is an amateur in the begging and the professional just focuses on getting one percent better each time they attempt something. If you go by the yard it’s hard, but if you go inch by inch it’s a cinch. If I was to go on stage in front of 1000 people, I probably wouldn’t do the best but I can work myself up to that point.
The key thing is, know who you want to be in life and then start doing things every day that will help you be that person. Then eventually after enough attempts, you can stop faking it because you’ll actually become that person that you desire.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, fake it until you become it. Don’t let your imposter syndrome prevent you from becoming the person that you desire. You have to remember that the Wright Brothers didn’t have pilot licenses when they flew the first airplane and you don’t need someone else’s permission to become the person that you desire to be. We miss one hundred percent of the shots that we don’t take, so when you don’t do your podcasts, do your presentations, or something because you’re worried about being a phony, you’re letting the illusion of your self-limiting beliefs hold you back. So don’t let this happen to you and you’ll live a life full of purpose.
So in your journal, ask yourself, what is an area where you’re feeling like an imposter? Is there someone else who did what you did and came from a similar or worst background than you did? Can you do the thing in privacy first before you release it to the public? Is there a belief that is holding you back? See what the root cause is and also remember that you can’t get everyone to like your stuff. Just focus on your tribe and that should cause less pressure.
