Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, where my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how casualness leads to casualties. I know a lot of quotes by people and I am currently working on a book called your daily cup of joe, which is the same title of this podcast where I am writing down how to implement 366 quotes in your life on a daily basis and I am going to have a couple of quotes by Jim Rohn in there because he was a great speaker and had tons of one-liners. I got casualness leads to casualties from him. When I first heard this quote a light went off in my head. What if I am casual about something then it’s not going end well for me. If I am casual about my health, then my health is going to decline and then I will probably gain some weight, and that can lead to back, hip or knee pain, then I could get high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol which could kill me. So I have to be intentional with my health and do the things I need to do on a daily basis where I don’t become a casualty.
The same thing needs to happen with your career and your relationships, if you’re not paying attention and think everything is fine, then they will slowly start to decay and you might be a 55-year-old lumber worker and once the lumber mill shuts down, will you be ready for the next thing? If you travel all the time and don’t take any time to check-in with your significant other, then that relationship is going to fail too. We have to be intentional with these things. One of the big things with my past marriage is that I was so focused on work that I didn’t really put a lot of energy into my marriage and we started to grow apart, then came the point where I ask for divorce, we end up splitting for six months, we got back together, and then ten months later she asked for a divorce. Starting a business is a lot of work and you might have some relationships that might die because you’re not putting in the effort to maintain them. Time is energy and where you focus your energy is where you’re going to see growth. I could have done a better job checking in but I didn’t and by the time I found out what happening it was too late. I think it is for the better that we separated because now I can focus more on my professional goals and build up this Grow With Joe business to the point where it operating on its own, which would give me more free time to spend with a future family.
As a kid, my parents made sure they were around for me for my school and sporting events. I talked to my mom who was a cashier and she said she didn’t want to take on a manager role because her schedule would have been too hectic and wouldn’t be able to do the family stuff like me and my sisters were used to growing up. It was less money but I’m glad I had my mom to help me out. My dad always made sure he went to my sporting events like basketball and football, and I enjoyed that. So when I have a family, I want to make sure I have a career that will give me the flexibility to enjoy those same moments in the future. This is why I work so hard on Grow with Joe now because I know it will have the potential to give me the lifestyle I want in the future. I know there are plenty of fish in the sea, I just need to build the right boat first that can handle any storm. Right now I’m on a log just hanging own and swimming with one arm trying to get to a shore where it has everything I need to get build the boat I want in the future.
So every day I’m being intentional with what I do with Grow With Joe. I know I have to write every day and do some marketing for my business. I also make sure that I write down in my journal to make sure I am doing the growth activities to help grow my inner circle which is comprised of my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self. If I’m not intentional with working on myself, I am going to end up a casualty and I don’t want to do that for myself. People are depending on me and I need to be a strong individual. If I become a casualty then somebody that I care about could become one too. So there is a responsibility thing to myself and others that helps me stay focus on the things that I need to focus on.
To help me stay focused, I just have a plan of what I want to accomplish and then I do it. We should ask ourselves what do we want out of life. For my career, I know what type of salary I want, what type of house I want to live, what kind of car I want, where I want to live, and when I want to retire. These goals all have time frames and numbers associated with them. You could say you want to go to an Ivy League school but if you don’t know what GPA you need to have, what SAT scores you need, and how much money you need, it’s not a very good goal because these things require training to get what is need to get into an ivy league school. It’s possible to do it at the last second but it’s more luck than anything. If I need a 3.76 GPA to get into an Ivy League school and you waited until your senior year to start trying, it’s going to be too late. There are time frames for goals and if your casual about your goals, then you’re going to miss them. So make sure you know what is needed for your goals to make them a reality or else you’re just being too casual about life.
To summarize today’s episode, remember that casualness leads to casualties and to prevent this you need specific goals, a plan, and then you need to start getting to work. Do this and you won’t become or have any casualties.
