Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the power of positive thinking. I like to think of myself as positive but realistic. If someone wants to do something, I don’t want to put them down but I also want to make sure that they have a plan. If a financial planning client came to me and said they want to quit their job to start a business, I would just say congrats, and do you need anything from me and have you thought about this and this.
In life, you need to take calculated risks and positive think will help you see opportunities and go after them. If I was to be negative, I would not have the last five years in this business. I would have been like, what’s the use and then found something with more security but less fulfilling and control over my situation.
You can be irrational with you positive thinking if you’re ignoring the danger signs but what I like about positive thinking is that you see opportunities because you’re keeping an open mind. There is a famous book out there called the secret and I haven’t read it or watched the documentary on Netflix, but it’s about putting what you want out in the world, and then the world will give you what you want.
I don’t think it’s as easy as that for most people but it can be as easy as that for some people. But what I think about it is now that you put what you want out in the world, now you’re scanning your environment for something that will help you get you what you want. It’s kind of like buying or wanting a car like an Audi, then all of a sudden, you start seeing a lot of Audis on the road.
Most likely it’s not because more people are buying Audis, it’s because you’re just more aware of them now. So when you’re positive with your thinking, you’re looking for silver linings, lessons to get better, and opportunities to get better.
Plus positive thinking can get you past those difficult moments in life. I know when I’m having a difficult time, I just like to tell myself, no matter how hard it is, or how hard it will be, I will get through it. Of course, sometimes you need to pivot on your plans because things have changed, but most of the time you just need to keep going and positive thinking will help out a lot more than negative thinking.
Negative thinking can be useful but you have to know when it is useful. But most of the time you should be positive with your thinking, more people are going to want to be around and it’s just more helpful in more scenarios. Plus it gives you hope to do better and be better as a person. If everyone decided to do nothing but negative thinking, then we wouldn’t progress as a society. It’s a balance though because some ideas just need to end.
So to help you stay positive, I would focus more on gratitude. When you show gratitude towards the things in your life, you can see more of the world’s beauty. Like this morning, I went for a walk and was grateful for the view I saw this morning. I was surrounded by trees and plants and clean air. Now I want to do great things so that I can see more of the beauty in the world. If I said that outside sucks and I’m just going to stay inside, I’m limiting my experiences and my opportunities in the world.
So in my journal every day, I write three things I’m grateful for so I don’t forget to be positive and also realize that if there are negative things in my day, I still have positive things in my life to have a great life. Then this gives me the motivation to work on my goals and live my best life possible. I’ve been doing this for the past eight years and life has never been better.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, indulge in the power of positive thinking. It will set you up for more success and opportunities in your life. You don’t want to be irrational with your positive thinking either, so make sure that you’re moving in the right direction for yourself and positive thinking can help move in that direction when you face bumps in the road. Most of the time you want a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset because reality is negotiable and you can get the life you want if you do the right things and have the right attitude.
So in your journal, ask yourself, do you participate enough in positive thinking? Do you participate in too much positive thinking where you’re not addressing issues? How can you show more gratitude in your life so you can be in the habit of positive thinking? Are you too negative in some scenarios? Are not negative enough? This is a balance and I feel like you need both to live a great life. So look at your life and see what needs to change so you can live the life that you want to live.
