Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we should never bend our heads, always hold it high. Look the world right in the eye. For myself, I don’t want to treat anyone less. I don’t care who I’m talking to, from people at the bottom of the totem pole to the top, I want to give each person the respect that they deserve.

When I was in the Marines, a Federal employee, and worked in the private sector, I hated the feeling of a loss of power when I interacted with senior management. I had to watch what I did and what I said because I didn’t want to feel the wrath of what could come from above.
That doesn’t mean I want to be hostile to them, I just want to hold my head up high and look them right in the eye and be true to myself. If I had to hold myself back, then I’m not looking at the world in the eye. If this happens, then I’m not going to say what is necessary and my morals will be lowered.

I’m glad I went through all my work experiences because it taught me how to not bend my head. Now that I’m doing my own thing, I feel that I don’t have to worry about changing myself to please the tribe. I remember at my last job, we had senior management come by to discuss some company mission objectives. None of us in the office would say the truth about how we weren’t going to go after that mission objective because we were too afraid of what was going to happen to us, so we bent our head and just played along and told them what they wanted to hear.

I don’t know if senior management knew what was going on, but they would definitely see down the road where our metrics didn’t match up. It was really just a waste of time and nothing really changed. So when you bend your head and don’t look the world in the eye, no positive change is going to happen. Is it going to feel uncomfortable to hold your head without bending it, but it is necessary for us to live our best life and to make a positive change in the world that we desire.

There is a saying that the stronger frame dissolves the weaker frame, and some time with you hold your head high, you’re going to lose. And this is why it’s important to build our human capital, social capital, and financial capital so that we can find a new opportunity and not have a scarcity mindset. You have to not be afraid to walk away. If you walk away, then you hold the power in the situation. So if you can maintain your position and handle the hostility that comes your way, then that is just as valuable.
To maintain this strength, we need to work on ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually every day. If we do this every day and strive to get one percent better every day, then we can keep our heads up high and look the world right in the eye and make the positive difference that we want to see in the world.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, never bend your head, always hold it high. Look the world right in the eye. This will take a strong inner circle, but remember the John Wooden quote, “Your outer circle success, will never surpass your inner circle success.” I’ve failed in the past at holding my head up high, and the feeling is horrible. So I do stuff every day to give me the strength to look the world right in the eye. I can’t handle every challenge that comes my way right now, so I just need to keep training and build a stronger inner circle. The world has a lot of problems that need to be fixed, and we need more people who have the strength to look the world in eye to make the positive change that we need.
