Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. You can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note-taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we should gulp on life, and not sip on it. Life is very short. I’m 34 years old and I can’t believe how fast life has gone by, but if I was to look back on my life, I can say I lived a pretty rich life because I gulped on it. Right now I’m in Medellin, Colombia working on my business while trying to learn Spanish. Me encanta mi vida ahorita. And it’s because I’m out here experiencing life. Covid has slowed things down for a bit but it is what it is. I feel really blessed to be in Medellin because it has a low infection rate and the health care system is really good here.

To get on this digital nomad journey, I had to do a lot of things. I went into the Marines after high school, I did night school, I got married and divorced, I went back to school twice, I started multiple businesses, and I’ve learned a lot. If I was to get hit by a bus tomorrow and died, I would be fine because I gulped on life and got to experience a lot of what the world has to offer. If you can, don’t push things off because if you do push things off then they might not happen. I’m constantly doing new things and it can be overwhelming at times but I just remember the Mario Andretti quote, “If everything seems under control, then you’re probably not going fast enough.”

When you gulp on life, you’re going to feel overwhelmed at first but after a while, you’ll build up your skills and know-how to handle the extra volume. If you look at the Hot Dog eating contest every year at Coney Island, Joey Chestnut can eat like 60 hot dogs in five minutes. He can do this because he trained his self up to this point. To help me gulp on life, I really like to thank my Marine Corps training. I pushed physically and mentally, and now my new normal is a lot higher. At my last unit in the Marines, I had to do like four different jobs at once and it was overwhelming but not that I’m running my own business, things are fine. I have to be the IT person, the accounting department, the life coaching department, the financial planner, and a bunch of different roles now. I’m just starting out and I’m trying to build something for the future but I know I can handle this workload for now until I can start hiring assistants to help me out. Covid caused my business to slow down a bit but my expenses are so low here in Colombia, it wasn’t that much of an issue.

I’m excited about what I’m building for the future and I’m excited about what I can do once covid is not an issue anymore. I don’t have any kids right now, so I would like to travel through Europe, then Asia, and then Australia after I learn Spanish. I would also like to hire an associate financial advisor to help me out in my business. If I was to try all these things five years ago, it would be too much. So you have to train yourself and be okay that you’re not going as fast as you want to. If you take this path of gulping on life, you’re going to see friends who buy a house, get a nice salaried job, and do other things, but I lived in DC and I know what the other things that are happening. Sitting on the train or in your car for an hour as you get to work and this is both ways. Dealing with a boss or co-worker that you really don’t enjoy. Paying for things that go wrong with your car or home. Accumulating stuff that you have to lug around. If you choose this stuff and security, you won’t be able to gulp on life.

I’m trying to live an interesting life. I’m building my biography, and if I wanted to write 294 episodes of a podcast, I need to experience life and I need to learn from a lot of different people. We can’t take the stuff that we own with us when we pass away. And when I’m on my death bed, I’m not going to tell stories of what I bought in 2012. I’m going to talk about what I did in 2012 and for a lot of other years. I’m excited about what I can build for my future and it’s because I’ve gulped on life and will continue to do so.

But when it’s time to rest, then I rest. I’m not a machine and I know things take time. All I can do is all I can do, but I have to make sure that I’m doing all that I can do. A week ago, I went to a friend’s house for brunch and mimosas and the next day, I had a hangover. Instead of working, I just ordered takeout and watched Community and Rick and Morty. I needed to recover. I had fun at brunch, but I know I can’t be having that lifestyle every day. I need to go out and create. This is what gives me the most joy, but in order to create, I need to have ideas and experiences so I can have the inspiration to create amazing things that will benefit society.
I’ve never been more satisfied with my life and I contribute a lot of that to living life on my terms and exploring what’s out there.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, we should want to gulp on life, not sip on it. Life is too short not to. If you gulp on life you will have more experiences and with these experiences, you can see how you need to truly design your life. I would not be here in Medellin, Colombia if I didn’t listen to the Financial Advisor Success Podcast, Read Tim Ferriss’ book the four hour work week, and said yes to joining the Marines. If I would have just said no to all these experiences, I would have just stayed in my home town and continued to work at the same grocery store as when I was a teenager. I have more wisdom and skills today and the combination of these two allows me to live my best life. So if you want to live your best life, be a little uncomfortable by saying yes to know things and challenges. In a few years, you will notice how much better your life is.

So in your journal, ask yourself, are you gulping on life or are you sipping on it? Are you doing too much of either? At times it’s okay to sip but not longer than necessary. If you do too much gulping you can drown. So being a little uncomfortable is a good indicator. What is something that you should be gulping more of? What is something that you should be sipping less on? For the sipping part, it tends to be too much social media and television. These are okay in moderation but don’t make them all day. Give gulping some time and you will notice a difference and you will never be happier.
