Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about who will watch the watchmen? This is an ancient Latin quote and it’s about how it can be hard to keep those in power accountable. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I know from watching the news and reading stories, that people can abuse their power.

If you heard about Harvey Weinstein, he was not a very good person but had a lot of power. Who was watching him? Probably no one, but with social media, people can be called out more now. They say that light is the greatest disinfectant and when people can see videos and read people’s accounts, then people can be moved more into action.

This can be overwhelming at times though. It feels like every time I scroll on scroll on social media there is something else that I need to focus on. This can be a distraction, and it also allows for people to slip through the cracks undetected. To create change, there is needs to be enough people to make enough noise or people need to vote with the dollar.

I feel the noise is good for one good punch but it’s not sustainable because people need to eat and live their lives. The money part is a more effective factor. Let’s say with the Harvey Weinstein example, he held all the power over these actresses because he controlled the purse for the movie studios. He could kill a project if he didn’t get his way and an actress didn’t have many other options, so they follow his command.

So to overcome this, I believe we need to build up our social, human, and financial capital. You need to know how to deal with the watchmen on different levels. You have to know how to communicate with them, and that will come from building up your human capital. You will also need people in your corner that can back you up, and this will come from building up your social capital, and you need to be able to walk away and figure out a way to fund the project yourself, this will help if you have enough financial capital or access to financial capital.

It’s like The legend of the three arrow story, where if you try to bend one arrow, you can easily break it, but if you put three arrows together, then it’s going to take a lot more force to break or can be impossible to break depending on the size of the three arrows and the materials they are made of. So when you have your capital built up in these three areas, then you’re more likely to keep the watchmen in check.

This takes time and discipline though. It’s easy to get distracted and to have the feeling of taking it easy. It’s okay to rest but not longer than you have to. There are a lot of things wrong with the world, and I believe if we can build up our capital with our human, social, and financial lives, then we can start fixing a lot of the issues that we see in the world by keeping these watchmen in check.

That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, who will watch the watchmen? The answer is that society needs to watch the watchmen and we will be able to keep the watchmen in check if we build up our social, human, and financial capital. There are countless stories of corruption in the world and it’s because the watchmen go on with their lives without detection or any real threat of losing power. So we need to build up our three arrows together or otherwise if we just attack with one arrow, we’re more likely to break. And the world needs us to be strong, so do the right thing and focus on building up your human, social, and financial capital.
