Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.

I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we should always be giving. Now there is a really good book out there by Adam Grant called “Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success” that talks about how the majority of successful people on this planet are givers.

In the book, Adam Grant describes how there are three types of people, reciprocator, Takers, and Givers. When it comes to givers, there are two type of givers, the pushovers and the disciplined ones. The key thing is that you want to be the disciplined giver.

If you’re the pushover, they’re going to have no time to do anything and what is most likely going to happen is that you’re going to sacrifice your true happiness, health, and success. We can’t be saying yes to every request that comes our day, we have to be disciplined about it.

I’m big into providing five-minute favors, but not more than that. My day is so packed with stuff that I want to work on and if I say yes to something big, then that means I’m not working on my creative stuff. So what I can do is provide recommendations on books to read, podcasts to listen to, YouTube videos to watch, I can recommend a service, I can give a quick piece of advice, or introduce this person to someone else.

This is what I do for my one-on-one requests. If the requests are overwhelming, then what you can do is create a FAQ sheet with the most common questions. I just created a self-development cheat sheet that I give out as a bonus for my journaling subscription and that’s a way to provide value while leveraging my time.

You can also post a lot of valuable information on the internet and social media. Just keep posting every day and then eventually you’ll be seen at the expert. Or do a bunch of free webinars and then have a call to action. A lot of people are just not aware of the problem that they have and need your valuable information so that can improve their life.

You don’t need to have everyone as your client or to like you to have a good life. You just need the right folks. 70% of jobs are filled through social networks first before they are posted online and if you run your own business, you just need 1000 people in the world to pay you $100 in profit every year.

Giving value is only part of the solution and we also have to be competent individuals as well. But if you want to take your life from good to great, then figuring out how to provide value is going to be crucial and provide lots of opportunities.

If you have a family or want a family one day, you don’t want to spend all your time at work and running on the hamster wheel. We should also want to experience life with the ones that we love. And the way we can do that is to learn how to provide disciplined value that gives us more control and flexibility over our lives. Learn how to do this and to create a system that you can leverage, then you’re going to live your best life.

And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, always be giving. Don’t be a pushover where you’re giving up all your resources and time, because if you do this to a taker, they will take everything from you and not give anything back. Giving to someone that is a reciprocator, is going to be like if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch your back. A giver will automatically do your quick favor. If you’re always giving value in the right way, you’ll have your best life. We don’t live on an island and have to interact with other people, plus a lot of the problems in the world need a team effort. So play your part to put more good out into the world and you can have the opportunity to live your best life as well.
