Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we need to be patient like the bamboo nut. There is a story of a Chinese bamboo tree that is not like other bamboo trees. Where four years after it is planted, it will finally break through the ground. And it the fifth year, in a period of five weeks, the tree will grow 90 ft.
To help this Chinese bamboo tree to grow at this amazing pace, it requires the farmers to have patience and hope to continue to water and fertilizer for this long. And this is is the same process that we have to follow for ourselves as we go after our goals.
Now I heard this story from Les Brown and did some research, and I don’t know if this story is true or not, but it is a great story to know. How many times do we try something, and then on the first failed attempt, we stop our watering and fertilizing procedure?
I’m a victim of this, and I know that success just takes time. A lot of the people that you see that are successful, put a lot of time and energy into their craft. Their success didn’t happen overnight. Four years is a long time just to break through the group, then you have to wait another year so that in a five-week period, you see the 90 feet of growth.
What most people see is the 90 feet of growth in five weeks, and don’t pay attention to the five years of watering and fertilizing. It’s so easy to stop on any day over those five years, and if you do, then that bamboo nut dies. So to help give us hope and will to keep going, we need to keep the end in mind.
Realize that your actions are moving you to a place where you want to go. This is what I’m doing. It’s been a long five years, and I had to start over in year four to start my own thing. But every day I review my goals and I know what I’m working to and know the activities I need to do to get me where I want to go.
I worked in other jobs and I feel like I’m unemployable because I love what I do so much. Hence, why I’m going to continue to water and fertilize my bamboo nut until I get the growth that I desire. Life is too short to do anything else in my mind. Why do I want ten feet of growth, when I can experience 90 feet of growth.
So if you want to have extraordinary results, you need to do things that are not normal for the regular population to do, and not many people are willing to water and fertilize their bamboo nut for five years when they see a whole bunch of other people with mediocre bamboo nut. So don’t get distracted by these mediocre results and just focus on what you really need to do because do you want to be 80 years old and wonder what if I would have done the work.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, be patient like the bamboo nut. Success takes a while to come to people and it will require faith, patience, and the will to do the work every day. Success is never owned, it’s rented, and the rent is due every day. So look at your day and see what you need to do to get the growth that you desire.
