Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how what is there really to lose? And in most cases, it’s our ego of not wanting to look like a fool. I’m a business owner and I’m currently living in Medellin, Colombia trying to grow my financial planning and development coaching. It’s a lot of work, but I love what I’m doing.
I’m also 34 years old and I see some of my peers and I feel a little bit behind. I’m on my fourth business and I’m finally getting the hang of it. My first business was a multi-level marketing business, which you made most of your money by signing people up underneath you. I didn’t last too long in that, because it didn’t feel right. Then I tried starting a personal training business, but I didn’t market myself well enough. Then I tried becoming a financial planner at this franchise, but I failed at that too, but I gained a lot of valuable experience.
Now I’m on my fourth business and I’m in the hole from my last business adventures, but I just tell myself that some people have over a $100k in student loans that won’t go away in bankruptcy. If it came down to it, I could claim bankruptcy and lose all my debts. I might have a hard time getting credit, but at least I could be starting at zero again. And starting at zero can be a great thing. You don’t have these things holding you back anymore and you can focus your time and energy on what you really want to do.
You might not have the stuff that you want, but now you’re starting with more experience. Getting clients now is such an easier process than when I first started out because I know what to say and do when I present the offer. So for me, if I fail, there is nothing to lose except my ego being bruised. There are tons of business owners who went bankrupt and then came back to thrive. The key thing is to be decisive and not let your ego of looking like a fool or not a successful as you want to portray, hold you back.
I basically lost everything and starting over. I was divorced and she took all the furniture and then I tried to continue with my old firm and moved in with a friend and didn’t have much. Then I decided to start over again and move back with my parents to start my own firm. Now a year and a half after that moment, I’m happier than ever. I love my life here in Medellin, Colombia and to get this life, I had to lose my DC lifestyle, my relationships, and my stuff, so that I could rebuild myself.
I’m still working at it and I will just keep going. Steven Pressfield, one of my favorite authors didn’t become a success until he was in his 40s after driving taxis to pay the bills. Rodney Dangerfield didn’t become a successful comic until he was 47 years old. The key thing is that you just keep going and working on your craft and building up your skills. There is no need to hold on to your old life, you can start over and become so much better if you make the right moves.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, what is there to lose? Just your pride. And the pride can be replenished. Just keep taking enough chances and keep building your skills up, and you can recover from anything. America loves a redemption story and if you try to keep on to things, that might just be keeping you from growing towards your full potential. I have lost a lot of money, time, pride, and relationships, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know I’m on my path to my destiny and this is my ultimate goal. And if you read the Alchemist, there is a great quote that says, It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. So like Santo in the book, don’t be afraid of losing your old self, because your new self will be so much better.
