Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how every time we take action, we are rewiring our brain. Just think of every action or decision that you make, it’s a vote for you who you want to be. So look at your life as who you want to win the election. And some elections are going to be harder to win than others.
I heard a good analogy, where adopting new behaviors and rewiring the brain is like walking to your mailbox but there is four feet of snow. The first time you walk to the mailbox on the sidewalk and back, it’s going to be tough because there is no path. But when you finish, you will leave a little path.
The next day, you have to get your mail, but it snows again, but the path you made yesterday, it still mostly intact. So then you take action and make the path a little bit clearer. And if you keep up this routine, eventually, you’ll have a clear path and it’s going to be super easy to get your mail.
This is what happens to your brain, where you do something over and over again. It’s going to get easier and your brain is going to rewire itself so that it will make that task easier. Then you’re going to have a new identity.
Changing oneself is rarely clean and simple, it’s going to require work and feelings of frustration. I say what makes things is easier is to adopt a new identity. I was not a podcaster by nature. I don’t like to put myself out there for people, but I know if I want to create a successful financial planning and development coaching business, then I need to do things that will help me get that identity.
I feel like the movie Field of Dreams, messed up the world. If you build it, people won’t come. This strategy might have worked 50 years ago when most people didn’t have access to a lot of things, but even the Ringling Brothers of the circus fame had to do a lot of marketing to get people to their show. So in a sense, they did build it, but the building was done once they got the animals and talent for the show.
I know a lot of financial planning and development coaching, but it’s not enough to get me where I want to go. In the Coleman study, they found that success is comprised of three things, your technical skills, branding, and marketing. And technical skills make up 20% of that equation, with branding coming in at 40%, and marketing coming in at 40%. So I have to make a decision on marketing, which is not my strong suit but I’m working on it every day. Now it’s a lot easier for me than it was a year ago.
I can definitely say that I rewired my brain. And this is what we need to do on a routine basis. We are not perfect people and we have a lot of flaws. So we need to rewire our brains so that we get rid of the negative habits and start adopting better ones. And the voting takes place every day. There are no off days. So know who you need to be and then start voting for that person.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, every time you take action, you’re rewiring your brain. So you have to look at your day and see what are you rewiring your brain for. Is it for a person you want to be in the future or not? And what makes it easier to take action is to start identifying as that person you want to be. If you want to go to the gym, then say you’re a gym rat and gym rats go to the gym. Then it should be easier to go to the gym. And every time you go, you’re making a vote to become that person, and then with enough votes, you’ll win the election. And with your life, you don’t want the wrong people to win the election over your life. It can be fatal.
