Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the power of turning small wins into big wins. We have to realize that big things start out small. If you look at Jeff Bezos, back in the 90s, he left his hedge fund company in New York City, to start Amazon. He saw that there was going to be a big wave to ride in the future once the internet took off.
When he told his boss what his idea was, he said it was a perfect idea but not for a guy making six figures. But Jeff believed in his dream and moved to Seattle to start Amazon. He would work relentlessly on his website that would sell books. He would even spend time packing books up and shipping them. He would have kept packing them on the ground if one employee didn’t mention that they could buy packing tables.
Now Amazon is a huge company but after 25 years of hard work. If I look at my life, my goal has to just keep getting better. Right now I’m trying to grow my own business, with the goal of turning this business into a firm where I’m hiring more minority financial advisors in the field. I didn’t think I would learn a lot in my MBA but I am. It is definitely not for someone who wants to have a small practice or work alone, but if you’re looking to create something big, I am definitely learning what I need to get in place in the future.
So I’m taking this small ripple of going to school and working on my business everything, and trying to make it into a big wave. Some ripples won’t turn into anything, so I just have to keep making ripples. This is why I do the podcast every day, and this is why I’m posting more on YouTube and Social Media. Just trying to make enough noise so that I get noticed and make my dream become a reality.
But when I fail at stuff where it doesn’t become a wave, I still didn’t fail completely. I just learned what didn’t work. When it comes to marketing, it just requires a lot of stamina and the more ripples that are made, the more opportunities there are for waves. The key thing is, if you keep making mediocre stuff, then the wave is not going to come. But you also can’t wait two years to make something happen. You could, but there is also other stuff that needs to happen.
If you’re trying to write a book, then you should build up an audience as well, because there are so many options today, that it is really easy not to be seen. But if you do get success, then just try to build upon that. If you’re in business, and you land one contract, then that can give you the confidence to go after the bigger deal.
For me, I used to do financial plans for free, then I saw the value I was creating and then I was able to clearly explain how I can help folks make an extra million dollars by performing these tax and investment strategies. And if I can help someone earn an extra $10,000 with their job, then that can be an extra $300,000 for them. So confidence builds upon confidence. You don’t want to start on the big stage first, you want to build up towards it.
I tried doing public speaking and I thought I had it, but I didn’t. I failed, but I know what I need to improve on the next time I get the opportunity. Not many opportunities to speak with covid now, hence the podcast.
One thing we should be worried about is if we stop making ripples. If there are no ripples, then there are no waves to ride and we’re just going to be stuck in the same position. And this position is not good for anyone. We need to constantly be moving so that we keep up with the times. The area can stay the same, but internally we should be different. Do this and we can have a lot of fun riding waves, instead of spending a lot of energy treading water.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, make every ripple into a wave by turning small wins into bigger wins. We don’t start off as world champions, we have to work our way up to this level. And the key thing is that we just have to keep making ripples until we get the wave that we desire. And it’s this wave that we give us the joy and satisfaction that we desire in life. Playing it safe is not that fun in the long run. We just miss out on a lot of things and then we’re going to have regrets. And if we do this for long enough, then we might not get that opportunity to do that thing. You don’t want to by that old person alone in the club, that person made no ripples. If you have a group of friends, then okay. But that group of friends is making ripples and memories that hopefully turn into a wave. To find out which ripples you need to make, and start getting to work.
