Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista.  In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances. At the same time, you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day.” In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the Grow With Joe founder, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the process required to do extraordinary things. I was in the Marines for almost seven years, and I joined the Marines because two of my friends joined. I wanted to go into the Air Force because I thought that is where smart people go into. My other friend almost went into the Navy, but my one friend convinced both of us to join the Marines.
And looking back at things, I’m glad I joined the Marines. It gave me a perspective on how much I could challenge myself and do more than I thought. When I met people in the Air Force, they were intimated by the Marines training schedule. Not all of them, but I would hear it from time to time.
A couple of years ago, I saw a meme where it said, “How long does it take the average person to become a Marine.” and the answer was you can’t be an average person to join the Marines. Thee Marines were definitely not a place where you take it easy, and the recruiters definitely didn’t promise me a rose bed.
Marines have recruiting posters with a drill instructor yelling at a recruit where the caption says, “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” You definitely can’t be an average person to join the Marines, but a recruiter will take anyone who will say yes. In boot camp and the fleet, you will see a Marine and wonder how they made it, but all they did was say yes, got on the airplane to go to boot camp, and made it through boot camp. I wanted to quit in boot camp, but I’m glad I was push through.
Now I feel like a lot of stuff is easy, or it’s easier to do unknown things. Right now, I’m in Medellin, Colombia trying to learn Spanish and work on this business, and I don’t think many people would leave the comforts of their home to do what I’m doing. But the key thing is that you need to say yes to opportunities instead of saying I’m not sure and no to your average life.
I’ve got to experience some amazing things in life, and it’s because I decided not to be average anymore, and life is too short to experience it any other way.
And that’s it for today’s episode to summarize how long it takes the average person to become a Marine? The answer is that you can’t be average. Average doesn’t get you too far in life. You will have less control over your life, and there will be less security. Since I joined the Marines, the benefits I’ve received from my GI Bill have helped me out so much. I’m using the GI Bill to help me get my MBA, and it helps with living expenses, but I had to join the Marines to get this benefit. There are a lot of rewards for being bold, taking action, and taking calculated risks. And the key thing is saying yes to all of those things. The more you say yes, the less average you will become, but it has to be yes to the right things. So decided what type of life you want and then figure the extraordinary steps it will take to get that life. Life will be much better if you do so.
