Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how getting the easy stuff right is the foundation of any success. One of Charlie Munger’s prescriptions to being miserable is not being reliable and being reliable is one of the easiest things we can do. If we say we’re going to do something, then we do it. If we say we’re going to be someone at a certain time, we’re there.
The thing with the easy stuff, it just requires more effort. And it’s like 10 percent more effort. To give a smile, or to send a message on congratulating someone on their accomplishment, it just takes a little bit more effort. The easy stuff doesn’t require super intelligence and being super lucky, it’s just requires ten percent more effort.
Every day, I send out five text messages to people in my network to see how they are doing? I’m checking in to see how I can provide a quick favor and introduction to help them out and to catch-up. It’s easy to do but it requires more effort.
When it comes to my health, the easy stuff is to workout and stretch on a daily basis. It’s not that hard to do these things, but again it requires extra effort. Same thing with reading. If we can’t get the easy stuff right, then we’re going to have trouble with the larger stuff.
I see life like the human body, everything is connected and by neglecting the small stuff, it can cause a lot of damage. 9 years ago I sprained my rhomboid muscle which is responsible for my should blade stability and now I have to constantly be doing stretches and exercises to strengthen this muscle or else it causes me to have other problems in my body like my neck muscle having to do extra work and then I strain it and then I can’t move my neck for a week. I’ve also had back spasms that kept me bedridden for a couple of days because it hurt too much to move.
It takes about 15 minutes to do all my exercises and stretches but it’s something that is easy to do but requires constant effort or else it’s going to give me problems again.
For my business, there is some easy stuff like writing my notes which is easy, but it’s not always fun to do. But I have to make sure I write my notes up so that if I get audited, I won’t get in trouble. I also have to make sure I pay my taxes where they are due. More easy stuff that is not always fun to do.
The huge success is not built upon big wins, it is built upon getting the easy stuff right when a lot of other people don’t put in the same effort. There are a lot of distractions out in the world that will make us not want to do the easy stuff, but giving ten percent more effort in everything we do is the easy stuff that makes a difference between those that are successful and those that are not.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, get the easy stuff right in order to get a great life. This advice applies to relationships, our health, and our careers. The easy stuff just typically requires an attention to detail and the willingness to put in more effort. It could be uncomfortable or that easy win might not make a difference right now, but in the long run, it will create good habits that will set us apart from the folks that only give minimum effort. In this new economy, the average is over and it requires us to put more effort into that make a difference. Now there is a time where we can do too much, and having clear visions of our goals will let us know what the right balance is.
