In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how we tend to take it easy when we think that we already made it. Back in 2018, the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League were trying to when its first Stanley Cup. There were always good with Alexander Ovechkin but seemed to always under delivery in the playoffs. And this was another year where they went up two and O against the Tampa Bay Lightning and then were facing a 3-2 deficit. Then I heard one of the players say it’s hard to stay hungry when you’re already full.
They thought they had the Tampa Bay Lightning in four games and took it easy but then had to take the series to seven games with a couple of lucky breaks to beat the Lightning. This type of scenario happens all the time. We have some good times, but then we don’t see the troubles coming our way, and then we can be wiped out by whatever is coming our way.
The Washington Capitals worked really hard but they also got lucky. We don’t want to rely on luck though, it’s not the best strategy. If you run a business. and I’ve been guilty of this, you have leads coming in and generating business, so all your time is focused on this, and then when all the work is done, then you end up scrambling trying to find new business. This is a good way to get burnt out or to end up hating your business.
This is why we got to focus on what made up hungry in the first place so that we don’t become complacent. When you’re hungry, you won’t spend that extra 30 minutes generating business because you will say you already worked hard. Unless you have a backlog of a couple of months, don’t stop generating business. Even then, still add to the buffer to make sure that if the worse happens, then we’re still okay. It’s those out of nowhere expenses and setbacks that make us regret that we didn’t stay hungry.
It can be very deceptive when we’re on top since we can feel invincible and feeling full, but that feeling can be taken away in a moment. Enjoy the moment, but don’t let it be a devastating experience if that moment is taken away from you. If you constantly stay hungry though, you can decrease the likelihood of that happening.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, can’t be hungry when you’re already full. This is like the saying, what’s the opposite of great, it’s good, not bad because if you’re fine with being good, you’ll never become great. If you’re feeling full, then you won’t go after more in life. Now there is a balance and there are trade-offs on what we do with our lives. But don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re full when you should be more hungry. There is always room for improvement but make sure it’s the right type of improvement. Have the right mindset about life, and you will have a great life.
