Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we are going to discuss how we should constantly educate ourselves so that we don’t get taken advantage of. I’m a big believer that only the educated are truly free. My goal is to read for at least 30 minutes every day, to listen to podcasts for 45 minutes while I go on my walk in the morning, and to watch an hour of educational YouTube videos in the evening. I realized awhile ago that the more I educate myself, the more opportunities that I’m going to have.
Once I turned off the television, I was able to turn on my life. I don’t watch many television shows. I have watched television in the past two weeks. I tried to watch Schitt’s Creek but I stopped during the third season. And I only watched it because I was stuck in bed and was tired of reading. I haven’t really watched television since 2012. Once I discovered non-fiction books, I just became hooked.
The reason why I’m here in Colombia is because of the book the Four-Hour Workweek. In that book, he discussed how if you can make dollars but spend in pesos, you can live a really great life. Right now, for every dollar I make in the United States, it’s like making four dollars here in Colombian pesos. So live a great life, and I don’t have to work that hard to maintain a very similar standard of living that I would get in the United States.
Plus I read a lot of philosophy books and biographies and see how people lived and realized that in my previous life, I was chasing a lot of things that weren’t worth it. I live a very simple life and I’m happy with it. I do my reading, I workout, and I work on my business. Plus I go visit different sites in the cities I’m in. Life is good.
I feel very free because I’m pursuing who I want to be and I’m not tied down to anything. What I didn’t like about my last firm were all the rules and high expectations. When I was first searching to become a financial advisor, I just thought there was one way of doing it, and that was by joining a major firm and selling their products. Then I kept learning about the industry and realized can switch from being a commission-based to a fee-for-service advisor and I can travel the world while doing it. Because I educated myself about my profession, I feel very free.
Plus studying the stoic philosophy has kept me focused on what’s important to me and not to get distracted by the unimportant and there are a lot of folks who get distracted by the unimportant stuff. And only education about many different things can give us freedom. Seneca was given a lot of money to educate the tyrant Nero, and Seneca was willing to give up his fortune to escape but Nero didn’t want that to happen and eventually forced Seneca to kill himself. So let’s be aware of the situation we’re putting ourselves in and having an education will help us in that area.
And that’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, only the educated are free. So make sure that we are educating ourselves on a daily basis. Reading or watching the news is not always educating ourselves because we are only getting one viewpoint, so we need a diverse set of ideas so that we can understand the truth the best that we can. This can prevent us from going down a path that will trap us. I would also recommend that we don’t read recent books that haven’t stood the test of time. What’s important now, most likely will be important a year from now. So make sure you’re gaining wisdom and not trivia. Do this and life should be a lot better to do.
