Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista, where my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the quote, “The Mind Follows The Body, And The Body Follows The Mind”
This quote for me is so true. As a kid I was overweight, I weighed about 185, 190 pounds in the sixth grade and I was 5’5” at that time. When I was in the sixth grade at that weight, I was super self-conscious and shy and didn’t want to have that much attention brought to me.
I remember when it came to doing line dancing in the gym, I was always picked last. It takes a big toll on your confidence and makes you not want to try new things and it made me doubt myself.
But luckily, I had a growth spurt before the eight grade and I lost weight from getting the stomach flu in Mexico and never have gotten that overweight again. Still had the self-doubt from when I was overweight as a kid that I didn’t really get over until my late 20s.
So I know that when I’m in a poor physical state, it’s going to put me in a poor mental state. So this is a big reason why I put a lot of energy into growing my physical self because I know it’s going to help me with my emotional self.
Then If I’m more confident, then I’m going to get important stuff done as a person because important things require to step out of your comfort zone and you’re going to need the confidence to step out of it.
When you feel strong and healthy, you’re just going to do better in other parts of your life. There might be things that you have to address with the other parts of your life, but a great first step to improving your life is to start with your physical self with how you exercise, eat, manage stress, and sleep.
If you can get these things in order, you have a high likelihood of being in good physical shape. So start making good choices with your physical self, you to have your mind to start telling you to make the right choices. For the most part, exercising, eating right, sleeping, and managing stress are a choice and we need to start making it a priority.
For myself, I find that if I plan it out, then it’s more likely to happen. Then when that time comes and I don’t feel like working out, I tell myself that it is a priority and whatever I’m working on can wait. Taking 30 minutes for my physical self can provide me the fuel I need to excel in other areas of my life.
The easiest person that we can let down is ourselves because we can always rationalize the decision. Like we can do it tomorrow. I have to work on this thing and finish it before I can work out. I have to do my laundry. But remember this, when we rationalize, indulge in rational lies.
Is it really that you can’t work out or are you just rationalizing your decision. All I can say is that you shouldn’t lie to yourself. So your mind needs to be in good shape so that you can be in good with your physical self. It’s really having the right behaviors that will help you succeed with your physical goals. Just do it. Just say that you’re going to work out in the afternoon or you’re going to work out during lunch or in the morning, it doesn’t matter. It just matters that you do it for the day. By not doing, your body is going to follow your mind is doing, and it’s not doing well, then your body is going to reflect it.
One of the reasons that I like working out so much is that I can listen to podcasts while I workout. So I’m able to catch-up on the podcasts that I’m following and get a workout in at the same time. This is known as temptation bundling and it causes me to stay excited to workout because I don’t drive that much anymore and I can’t really listen to a podcast while I work because it’s very distracting so I’m left with listening to my podcasts while I workout. It works for me and if you have trouble with sticking with a workout, what reward can you give yourself that will motivate you to workout. Is it a protein shake that you love, it’s a podcast or audiobook that you can listen to, is it a television show that you can watch after your workout. Find something that will motivate your workout.
You could also go down the path of paying someone five, ten, twenty dollars for every workout you miss. People tend to respond to incentive and pain avoidance, see what works for you.
Your mind is going to be your first barrier when it comes to working out. If you can lower that barrier as much as possible, then you’re more likely to work out. So make it a habit to workout and every time you workout, you’ll make the barrier a little bit lower because you’re used to working out. Then you’ll have a mind that is strong and your body will start to reflect how strong your mind is.
The brain wants to conserve energy because it doesn’t know when the next famine will hit but we don’t live in the same environment that our ancestors lived thousands of years of ago so we have to have systems in place to make sure the voices of our ancestors are taking over because they don’t live in today’s environment. So don’t listen to that voice, it wants to protect you but it’s telling you the wrong information. Your voice is always with you but that doesn’t mean that it’s telling you the correct information so you have to understand when that voice is sabotaging your or helping you out. Sometimes they both sound the same but learn how to tell the difference and you will become unstoppable.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, remember that the body follows the mind, and the mind follows the body. So you need to work on both if you want to be a success. Now go out there and start getting to work.
