You Can’t Learn Without This

Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista, where my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about the importance of receiving feedback. I’m a big believer that you can’t learn without feedback. If you want to get better as a person, you have to be okay with receiving feedback.
I love feedback because it tells me what I am doing right and what I’m doing wrong. When I end a coaching session, I always ask for feedback at the end of the session. I just ask the client, is there anything that I can improve on for you and any other thing you need.
When I ask that question, I learned what were the preferences of those folks and then I can use their feedback to help me with other clients. One client wanted a feedback summary e-mail and I just started doing that with other clients and they like it as well.
Plus I like it because it helps me stay better accountable with my clients because I have an e-mail that I can reference on what our priorities are going to be for the next session.
To accept feedback, you have to be okay with not performing as well as you think you are. I’m a big believer that there is always room for improvement and that it’s the biggest room on the planet. I’ve received feedback in the past and it stung, but I know that it was the right thing to hear at the time.
It’s best to squash a bad habit now before it becomes permanent. If you think that you’ve been doing something right for twenty years and then all of a sudden, your luck runs out and that bad habit is costing you your life. In sports, if you have bad form, it can cost you your performance and it can cause you an injury.
I’m 6’3” and I love basketball but I didn’t really ever learned to play low and it causes me to be slow laterally so people can drive by me faster because I didn’t work those leg muscles very much and now that I’m in my 30s, I’m doomed to be slow forever. I didn’t realize this until I worked as a personal trainer and started learning about the different muscle groups.
I wish I would have had a basketball coach in the past when I was in elementary school that would have made me do dozens of exercises that would improve my lateral quickness. I guess when I start having kids, I can teach them what I wasn’t taught.
When it comes to receiving feedback, I would only take the feedback from people who are involved in your area. Sometimes, I get feedback and I know I can’t do it. Like when somebody mentions that I should be doing this type of event or I should be doing this in my business. Sometimes, I don’t have enough bandwidth to handle all of those things.
I just put it on the back burner and decide to do it later. One of my goals is to move to Latin America next year and when I tell people this, they tell me that I should focus on getting Latin America clients. I don’t plan to live in Latin America plus I want US dollars, so I think I should just focus on US clients because when I move back, I can hopefully continue my relationships with those folks in the states. It was just an idea.
Right now I am also trying to figure out online marketing and there is a lot to learn. I’m trying out Facebook ads and I’m trying some other things, and I’m just trying to see what will work. Every time I do something, it’s just an opportunity to learn to see what will work. I know if I want to grow this business, I need to focus on marketing and that’s what I’m doing right now. I was running some ads for my cousin who sells Mexican Folk Art and I noticed that the second time I did ads for the promotional item, it got more clicks than the first time around.
It was good feedback to understand where I need to improve and how to get a better conversion on his stuff. You have to remember that it takes 10,000 hours to become a master in your craft and it has to be 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. You can’t just do something 10,000 and you become a master at it. I could just be running the same ad over and over again for 10,000 hours but if I didn’t take the time to split test different headlines and different offers, then I would just go broke because things would stop working for me because things are always changing in business.
Every time you do something, you need to be analyzing what you did and what you didn’t do. You might have gotten lucky on the first shot, but then your luck starts to run out. You don’t want to be in a position where your luck runs out because it can take a lot of energy and time to get out of that hole. I remember at my last business, I wasn’t focused enough on marketing and lead generation and it hurt me. I can look back on why I didn’t succeed in my last business and I would say that is the cause. Revenue can solve a lot of problems. If you’re focused on the wrong things, then your revenue might take a hit and you won’t have enough money to fund your business or your life. And that’s a bad spot to be in life.
Sometimes you need to cycle through those ups and downs of life and in business to truly understand what is important and not important. It’s a real humbling experience to know that we are not born perfect, but we can work our way to perfection through feedback and working on our weaknesses. In podcasts, I hear it all the time that people got too confident in their abilities and stopped receiving feedback. Then things got too big to manage and things just fell apart. It happened with me and I got burned by it.
I wish I had this wisdom back in the day but I don’t think I was in the right spot mentally to receive that type of feedback. I am now though and will do anything that will help me become more successful.
That’s it for today’s episode, to summarize it, you can’t learn without feedback so make sure you have a system in place that can give you the feedback you need to become successful and don’t let your ego get in the way of receiving that feedback.
