Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how to enjoy the present. A couple of years ago, I spent a lot of time focused on the future. I was trying to grow a business, and pretty much everything I did was to maximize how I could make my future brighter. This would require me to miss somethings and I would be constantly anxious about the future while I was living in the present.
You have to realize that the future is not guaranteed and that once you lose today, it will be gone forever. This is a balance because you have to do things today so that you will have something in the future. In my last marriage, I spent a lot of time working and I neglected to spend time with my previous wife. We took the five love languages, and her top love language was quality time and acts of service. So a person trying to start their own firm, I didn’t have a lot of time to spend with her and do acts of service.
I love what I currently do right now, and I don’t think I regret the decision to focus on my business, because I believe that Financial Planning is extremely important and that Latinos need a lot of help in the area, but going through that rough patch with my previous wife, made me realize that I need to take time to enjoy the present as well.
The present is a present because this is all you have to enjoy at the moment. So where ever you are in life, enjoy it as much as you can because once today is gone, it’s gone forever. To take advantage of the day, you have to realize what is important what isn’t important, and then plan out your day.
When I started out my business, I was trying out everything to see what would work and what doesn’t work. This takes a lot of time and I made a lot of mistakes, but I just tried to pivot out of that situation as fast as possible. At first, I thought I would have the time to manage everything, but then I realized after a couple of years that I couldn’t manage everything coming my way and that’s when my relationship with my ex-wife started to degrade. Plus it was hard financially and there were other issues we had to focus on, but it made me realize, to solve those things, you have to be aware of the present and how to fix those issues.
So if you want to have a brighter future, you need to make sure that you’re taking care of things in the present. If you can do that, that the present can really be a present because you’re doing things that will help you with your future self.
Every day, I make sure that I read, workout, write in my journal, and meditate because I’m trying to enjoy my present so that the next day will still be good. I now that I can’t do everything in a day, and that it’s okay to start something and not finish it every day. I just get one percent better in the areas that I want to focus on. Then with enough time, I will accomplish my goals. Life is a journey and you just have to enjoy the journey.
If you don’t like your journey, then you have to do something to change it. It can be a grind to start your own business, but I enjoy the process. I feel like I’m creating something that will be beneficial to society, and if I don’t do it. Then who else will do it?
I know that that financial planning is extremely necessary for the Latino population and that I need to do something that will help them out because as of right now, there are not a lot of resources for them. So while I’m working on this business, I also have to make sure that I spend time with my friends and family because I will never get that time back again. It doesn’t take much to catch up with folks either. I have a goal where I send out a message to five people in my network to see how they are doing. It takes about six minutes to do and I’m just keeping tabs on what they are doing.
I get a lot of thanks from people in my network for just reaching out. I know that I don’t get many check-ins on how I’m doing from folks in my network, so I’m just going to do it myself. I don’t want time to pass so much that they forgot who I was so I’m just going to take six minutes out of my day to catch up with folks. I guess that is just six minutes less on social media for me.
There are a lot of great things in this world that you can enjoy. I just moved back to Oregon and I make it a point to enjoy things in Oregon that I didn’t have to enjoy in the past. I have gone on hiking trips, I went inner tubing down the Sandy River, I went to festivals, and I saw friends and family. I’m really glad I’m doing these things because it’s allowing me to make good memories and when you get older, that’s what you’re going to look back on and remember. You don’t remember the long nights, but you remember that awesome hike you went on and saw the Colombian Gorge. Plus it gives you something to talk about others. If you want to be an interesting person, do interesting things and that will come from treating today like a present.
Thanks for listening to today’s episode, to summarize it, remember that today is a gift and that’s why it is called the present. So make sure you don’t waste today because once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. If today is a day to work, then work. If today is a day to rest, then rest. Just don’t rest and work at the same time. Your goals as an individual will determine the balance you choose but don’t take the day for granted.
