Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how busyness can be a form of laziness. We all know that one person who says they are constantly busy but they are not making much traction in their life. It’s kind of like they are on a hamster wheel.
The most likely they feel this way is because they are focused on low-value activities and they have a hard time establishing boundaries for themselves. They are just focused on all the wrong things.
So if you’re constantly busy, you might have to ask yourself, what am I really working on? Is it busy work or is it work that matters?
If it’s busywork, then you’re taking a lazy approach to your schedule. You’re most likely being reactive to your day and not being proactive. When you’re being reactive, then what happens is that you will say yes to anything that comes your way or you might be continuing to do a process that might not be needed anymore.
So you’re so focused on the work that you really can’t see what is going on around you. This then can cause you not to work on projects or activities that will make a difference in your life.
You have to understand that you have to take the time to sharpen the saw so you can decide what you should be working on and what you shouldn’t be working on. This is extremely important because those unimportant activities are stealing a lot of your valuable brain glucose.
You can only really spend so much time on activities before you burn out, so you want to make sure you’re using your brain glucose on things that matter. It’s kind of like using all your water on a water balloon fight in the desert and you have 20 miles to hike and there are no water stations for the next 20 miles.
So to prevent dehydration, you want to make sure you’re using your water correctly. The same concept applies to you and your brain glucose usage.
To prevent this waste, we need to be intentional with our time and our activities. To help me focus on the most important tasks, I ask myself in my journal, what is the most important thing that I should work on today. What is the uncomfortable thing I have to do in order to give me the life that I want? Then I time block in my calendar and make sure that I do it.
Take some time and ask yourself. Where do I want to go in life and am I doing the things today to get me there?
For me, I know I have to work on my business with grow with joe and do my podcast, market my podcast, and work on my course, because if I don’t, then I’m not being true to myself and I won’t be able to help that many people.
The world needs a lot of assistance and I’m just trying to save my slice of the world and in order to do that, then I just need to not get distracted by the unimportant stuff.
If I’m lazy with my schedule, the unimportant stuff will take over my life and then my desk will start to feel like a self-imposed prison cell and I don’t want to give up my freedom like that.
It just takes ten minutes to plan out my day to ensure I have the right agenda for myself. If you don’t have ten minutes to plan out your day, then laziness is already taking over your life. I know I have control over my life to choose how I spend my day. You might not be able to change everything overnight, but you can make incremental changes with your schedule to give yourself more freedom. Remember, you don’t have to be great to get started, you just have to get started to become great.
This is why I created a time management challenge to help people get more control over their lives. So if you want more control over your life, just go to growwithjoe.me/challenge
I know that I have to take control over my schedule because it will give me the lifestyle that I desire, which is to be able to travel anytime I want and to spend more time with friends and family. And read more books.
