Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons on how to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually so you can have better careers, better relationships, and better personal finances.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe where I combine financial planning with self-development coaching for Latino professionals.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how you can’t save the entire world but you can save a slice of it. It is a nice idea that you as an individual can save the entire world but with a population of 7.53 billion people and only 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year, there is not enough time in the day to save the entire world.
What you can do is save your slice of the world. It might not feel like enough, but if I save my slice of the world, and everyone that I know saves their slice of the world, then the world would be a better place. So I would recommend what you’re really passionate about saving and just focus on saving that slice of the world.
I’m interested in helping Latinos and personal finances. So if I can help them out with that, then that could help out a lot of other problems. I’m a big believer in the John Wooden quote where he saves, you’re outer circle success will never surpass your inner circle success. So if you want to have the out circle success of your career, relationships, and personal finances, then you need to work on your self first with your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional self.
So if your trying to save people and their finances, a good first step is to help them with their self-development. If I can coach someone to have more confidence and be better mentally, then it will have a multiplying effect in other areas of their life, especially with their personal finances. So when you’re looking at saving your slice of the world, the thing you’re working on might not be the thing that actually needs to be fixed. This is why I want to combine development coaching with financial planning because that development coaching will most likely be more beneficial than the financial planning because if the person isn’t mentally, emotionally, or spiritually mature enough, then they will just make bad financial decisions in the future.
This can prevent a lot of wasted time. I could easily just give someone some financial recommendations but if they are not ready to implement those recommendations, then all that work will be for nothing. I think it is nice to feed the homeless and do other stuff like that, but it’s not teaching people how to fish. They probably have some other issues they have to overcome and maybe providing them with behavioral health resources can nudge them or ask them if they want to see someone there at the food kitchen. Or at the food kitchen, there would be seminars or motivational speeches playing while they eat. Something that will nudge people in the right direction for self-development.
There are tons of resources out there and we just need to know how to use them in conjunction with what we are already doing. When you’re trying to save your slice of the world, it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to require work, so if you know how to take a shortcut, you can take that shortcut. You only have 24 hours in a day and 365 days a year. Plus you need to sleep, eat, and take care of your family. So learn how to be more efficient when it comes to saving your slice of the world. Otherwise, you’ll just burn yourself out and the problem will just continue to be there or come back.
There are so many things in this world that you can focus on and it will just depress you. There is the water issue in Flint, Michigan, the children in cages, and other injustices out in the world. And if you tried to focus on all those things at the same time, nothing would get done. It requires an extreme focus on one area if you want to eliminate it. Look at vaccines, people thought measles were gone but they are popping up again. If you don’t completely crush something like measles and other things that need to be fixed, then it has the opportunity to come back. This is why it’s so important to not let other distractions from preventing you from focusing on your slice of the world.
Then it is important to recruit and get other people in the fight. One of my goals for Grow With Joe after I’m more established is to bring more Latinos and Latinas into financial planning. There is a huge need for them in this industry and I’ll just do my part to save my slice of the world. I can do other things like recycling and reduce my plastic use, but I know that I don’t have the time or bandwidth to focus on other things. Plus I’m not as passionate to focus on other things. So one hour spent on something else will not fill my cup the same way as focusing on ways to improve financial security for folks. Plus I believe that financial security is the path to solve a lot of different problems and that I focus on this, then it will provide the greatest good for society.
We only have a finite amount of resources, and a majority of the time we should spend those resources that will provide the greatest amount of good for the world. What people think is important is going to vary from person to person because we all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences, but we should test those perceptions and see what is really important and what’s not important. There are going to be tough choices for society, but as an individual, just focus on what you can do to save your slice of the world. Just try to make the world a little bit better at the end of the day than how you work up. This could involve a lot of little things like brightening up someone’s day or by supporting someone who is trying to do something important. If we all saved our slice of the world, then the sum of our slices will be greater than the whole. We have a long way to go as a society but we can still make a positive step in the right direction to get started.
Thanks for listening to today’s episode, to summarize it, you can’t save the entire world but you can save a slice of the world. There are too many things to focus on in the world and you’ll just drown or won’t make a dent in any issue if you focus on too many things. To find your slice and start saving it.
